FROM PRESENTATIONS . .. HENRY G. BENNETT MEMORIAL LIBRARY Southeastern Oklahoma State University li- brary officially became the Henry Garland Ben- nett Library as part of the school’s annual Home- coming activities. Dr. Bennett, a past president of Southeastern and Oklahoma State University, was also appointed permanent director of the nation’s “Point Four Program.” His leadership in education and pioneering in this area led to the building of the framework of higher education as we know it in Oklahoma. Dr. Bennett was responsible for many innova- tions in the two colleges he served as president as well as helping to set up programs elsewhere in fire training, technical training, national defense training and agricultural training. Under President Harry S. Truman’s administration, the Point Four Program was set up for “peace and freedom”, the fourth point of which was “to embark on a bold new program for making the benefits of our sci- entific advances and industrial progress available for the improvement and growth of the underde- veloped areas,” a program of which Bennett was destined to be named permanent director. His concern for international affairs was part of the reason for this appointment. His desire to educate and assist can be summed up in a quote from a speech to the OSU faculty in 1939, “I should like to see one generation reared and edu- cated from cradle to maturity with the benefit of all that we know about medicine, health and hy- giene, formal education and psychology. I should like to see one generation . .. grow up free from disease, social or biological or mental malnutri- tion or maladjustment, in happy and healthy learning situations. Truly, I believe here lies the pathway to Utopia.” The library bore a new name for the presentation ceremony on Saturday. The plaque commemorating the memorial dedication (right) now stands in the entrance to the library. 10
