Southeastern, the Campus of a Thousand Magnolias, can be also called the campus of a thousand differ- ent peoples. We are the people of the future, and learn from the people of the past and present. 7 We came to be educated and learned life, We came to see new people and met friends, We came to master new skills and mastered ourselves, We learned and will know learning never ends. A Combination of Living Growing Together Seeking New Friends vw, ACADEMICS Art Department Adds New Instructors Painting was one phase of the art department curriculum. Pottery, sculpture, arts and crafts were studied by a record number of students. Pottery classes were popular as the people enrolled made ashtrays and progressed up to vases and many other useful items for their homes. A few students made and sold many of their projects. Sculpture as in the pottery classes and painting classes was with different materials. Arts and crafts classes made all types of crafts. Some were macrame, soap carving, mosaics, batik, and weaving. In order for the students to learn about sketching and paint- ing nature, many art department instructors took their classes out to observe the working aspect of nature - the different colors in a tree trunk, a magnolia in bloom, or a piece of rope. Page 18: (1) Relaxing under a tree on an outdoor class day makes the after- noon more enjoyable. (2) Figure drawing is, at best, difficult, but these women are studying their subject closely for even the most minute details. Page 19: (1) Macrame is not a new craft, but it's one of the fastest growing ones. Students in arts and crafts get a good lesson in this. (2) Being outdoors with a sketchpad often inspires some of the most beautiful paintings. Beginning its eleventh year on SSU's home campus, the aviation department's future flight plans look good. Bill Edwards assumed the duties as chirman of aviation on the retirement of A. M. Augieβ Moore. (1) Helicopters are sometimes used to get students used to a new type of flying after mastering the light planes. (2) A good pilot usually washes down his plane after each flight. Aviation Soars Past 10 Years Future Flight Plans Look Good (1) Aviation instructors and students pass out and examine the Aviation recruiting brochures. (2) Trainers are the first of a long series in gaining a pilotβs license. (3) Mechanics are trained to get the best service out of a plane. 22 Biological sciences gained new machines for their teaching and research facilities. Always a fascinating field, new dis- coveries made it an ever changing world. Alew Machines Added To Biological Bciences K r Business World Is Entered By Ambitious Business-Minded Qtudents Business was a fascinating world of adventure for ambitious people. Each year hundreds of people made their way into the exciting field. Typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping were only small facets of business. It included computer sciences, office machines, and new innovations in secretarial proce- dure . 24 HfcNftY 6. BENNETT MEMORIAL LIBRARY SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIV. DURANT, OKLAHOMA 74701 Today's Teacher Musi Be Able to Work With the Mind Back in the early days of teaching, instructors had only to teach what subject they specialized in. Now, a teacher has to be able to deal with childrenβs personalities and emotional problems in addition to placing knowledge before them. Psychology and Education courses were designed to get the classroom teacher the information he needs to teach and encourage students to learning. (1) Some days the classes are boring in that good facts need to be repeated, but other days are jumping with new ideas. (2) Elementary majors study grade school art in the hallway of Morrison Hall. (3) Rose McAlister, a student worker, goes over the day's plans which need to be typed. 9ft Two-Year Elecfronics Program Makes Progress Possible Miniaturization and intricate circui- try were just a small part of the information covered in the Electronics depart. The two-year program studied how electronics had made progress possible. Scale models of different types were used as practice pieces, preparing the student to enter the pro- fessional field. (1) Many classes meet 10 practice hooking up tiny wires and plugging in microscopic modules. (2) Comparison of work often helps bring understand- ing that studying a text. (3) Usually patience and individual instruction works better than other methods. Shakespeare, Browning, and Shelley were heard echoing down the hall, traditionally, in the English Department. This year classes in modem and contemporary authors joined the curriculum. Open, informal classes made each session free and easy going. Β y Classrooms were modernly furnished with carpet, modular desks and chairs. English classes were usually crowded. Many freshmen took these classes to improve their written expressions. English Classes Are Not Traditional Anymore 1 Southeastern provided a varied program of intramual and inter-collegiate athletics for both men and women. The intramural program, which encompasses practically all team and individual spons, attracted the whole-hearted participa- tion of the student body. Competition was keen among vari- ous campus organizations on the intramural field. On the intercollegiate level the university was a member of the Oklahoma Inter-Collegiate Conference. Intercollegi- ate sports included football, basketball, baseball, tennis, track, and golf. Two gymnasiums, a large indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and a track and field stadium (Paul Laird Field), and several playing fields served the athletic recreational needs of students. Healihy Bodies Go Wiih Healihy Minds A degree in Home Economics pre- pared students for home and family life plus a professional career. Courses taken on the degree were as interesting and exciting as each stu- dent wished to make them. Requirements included in-service training, learning to write instruc- tional objectives and generalizations related to learning experiences, use instructional media, coordinate theory with practical application and present teaching units which incorporate many methods of teaching. Field trips during the year included visits to high schools, and to East Texas State University in Commerce. The emphasis was on quality of life in the curriculum. Careful guidance and direction were given. Students were encouraged to grow and to expand their horizons through student mem- bership in the Student Home Econom- ics Association, the continuation of the high school Future Homemakers of America club. Kathleen Meadows Is Chosen As New Home Economics Chairman n a Not many people rushed out and threw down a calf after completing the horse- manship program, but they did have a taste of the days when horses were the only way to go. Very few of the students finished the course without a feeling of accomplishment. Hours of work went into getting to know their animal, caring for it, and finally putting it through the gaits. In the classes, beginners (and people who had ridden and competed before) watched films and exhibitions. They also rode through various exercises. After completing the class, some equestriennes joined local clubs and horse associations in order to put their knowledge to use. Horsemanship Programs Adds Touch Of Old West Ol .. mi Β«, ? W C t,Β , mm I H' -jfflEi r In Industrial Education, effort is made to provide a wide- range of industrial-type activities. The student has a selec- tion of major specialization in automotive, drafting and design, electronics, metals, or woodworking. (1) Welders need protective helmets. Opposite page - (1) Woodworking produces many specialized skills. (2) Regular inspection and maintenance are learned as part of the skill. (3) Understanding machine pans is important. Open House for New Indusirial Building Draws Nofables Although a degree in journalism wasnβt offered, courses in the depart- ment were filled. Each semester, the journalism office published the Southeastern, the campus newspaper. Included in its pages were news of sports, organizations, aca- demics, activities, and fast-breaking stories. At all major events, a reporter and cameraman were there to get the news. In May, the office produces the col- lege yearbook. The Savage. It was a permanent record of all the yearβs happenings. Editor of the newspaper was Debbie Pinsker while Julia Davis edited the yearbook for the second year. Kenneth Nichols and Rudy Manley advised them. yin Journalism Gets Campus News Recorded. A 1 Open Stack Arrangement in Library Permits Flexibility The Southeastern Library building was renovated and remodeled in 1968. Holdings remain maintained in an ββopen stackβ arrangement thereby permitting great flexibility and adaptation of the library program to the various needs of a growing university. (1) Relaxation is important in studying habits (2) Student numbers are used when checking out materials (3) Complete use of the card catalogue saves time. The library expanded its usefulness and effectiveness for students and faculty by planning the retrieval of reference material on a self-help basis. Now the staff has more time to assist people. (1) Kay Parham and Shelly Bodkin shelve governmental documents. (2) Good lighting and quiet areas make the library a good place to study. (3) Names of modem and ancient writers adorn masonry on library. Mathematics and Computer Sciences Department were closely-interwoven. Each field went well with the other. Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra, and Calculus were hard subjects for many students with little mathematics background. But special courses were offered to make up whatever deficiency existed. Basic computer sciences lent themselves to interest. In many cases, it was the first taste of working with computers. (1) Finals can be long and boring, but relief seems to set in afterwards. (2) Instructors in math classes use a lot of chalk, but it is worth it. (3) Xeroxing tests are frustrating. Maih and Compufer Sciences Departmenfs Are Close-knif sue r? im (1) Hunting mistakes in computer readouts could make for tempers lost. (2) Once a foul- up is found, smiles pop out all over the computer lab. (3) Problems in both divisions can be easily worked out by following the formulas. A bachelor of science degree in Medical Technology was offered to prepare students for careers in medical technology and clinical laboratories. Students earned the degree by com- pleting three years of work at this uni- versity and one year at an approved hospital school. After all the pre- scribed work has been completed and the professional training at an approved school of medical technology has been properly certified to the registrar, the degree was granted. Medical Technology Program Grows Teachers Fill Audio- , Visual Classes To Brim Teachers education requirements required an audio-visual course, but many students took the courses just to learn how to work the projection equipment and do special effects. Languages Qtress Universaliiy No hablo espanolβ wonβt be heard on the third floor of the Administration building. Spanish, French, and Choctaw were among the languages offered. More and more, especially in this area, a second language was becoming a necessity. Large numbers of bilingual educators were needed to teach in areas where the students study English as a second language. Jorge Morales handled the Spanish with Claude Fouillade in French, Betty Jacob taught Choctaw and Enrique Santamaria took care of the second language courses. 4 Enlightened Students In Music Music students, in both entertain- ment and teaching fields spent many hours in private and group lessons learning the field. Most students par- ticipated in groups, ensembles, and solo performances. Some of the fields the students par- ticipated included: Renaissance Feast, a Christmas celebration; Madrigals, a campus singing choir; assorted music festivals, concerts; and Homecoming Festivities. Campus Year Captured In Pictures Among the variety of courses offered by SSU, photography classes were of the first to be filled. James Weaver was the instructor and has been in the business through the years. The classes were set-up on individ- ual study basis with emphasis on actu- ally shooting and developing pictures. Nguyen-H.M. Tuan took many of the pictures for the yearbook. Laurel Bay- less called many picture appoint ments. The department of Physical Sciences was comprised of the disciplines of physics and chemistry. Objectives were (1) to prepare students to enter the teaching profession in chemistry, physics, and natural science; (2) to provide students the preprofessional training required for entrance into schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medi- cine, optometry, nursing, physical therapy, engineering, medical technology, pharmacy, allied and public health fields; (3) to prepare stu- dents for graduate study in chemistry and physics; and (4) to prepare scientists for career opportuni- ties in industry and government. The interested student was encouraged to par- ticipate in a directed research experience as an integral part of the science program . r A Physical Sciences Opens Door To Variety Of Fields 55 Safety Education Provides Personal Precaution Men as well as women, learned to control themselves behind the wheel. Each student had the opportunity to learn every detail about safety. On one-way streets, two-lanes, or even freeways; accidents happen. But the students learned to avoid it by being prepared. James Bowers taught the students to always use safety first. In drivers ed classes, he drilled important safety fac- tors. In doing this, it provided awareness to each student. The student driver not only looked out for himself, but also looked out for others. Each student gave the time and effort to safety edu- cation. They put many hours practicing to be a better driver. Students had the opportunity, as a social science major, of joining Phi Alpha Theta along with other Social Science majors and to participate in travel and conventions that take place annually throughout the United States. In addition, some students spent their summers in special tour programs offered by the department. For fun and college credit, they traveled to Europe, Latin America, and the Con- tinental United States. All tours are sponsored and directed by faculty members of the Social Sci- ence Department. Social Science majors were allowed to join the Red River Valley Historical Association and were eligible to work There was plenty of opportunity for the serious and ambitious student. The social sciences involved the biggest businesses and largest employers in the United States, including the govern- ment. Knowledge of social sciences equip- ped students for secure and well-paid professions. 58 in museum and archives of the associa- tion to gain research experience. The museum and archives is located in an important piece of southeastern Oklahoma's history in its own right. The building, formerly known as Oklahoma Presbyterian College, had exerted significant economic and social influence on southeastern Oklahoma since 1896. The Association (through the Social Sciences Depart- ment) puslished the Red River Valley Historical Journal and the Red River Valley Historical Review. History To Future Studied In Social Sciences S9 Radio Broadcasting Added to Speech Department The program of studies and activities in speech provided education and training in oral communication for all students of the college, whether or not they plan to become specialists in the field. The speech activities and courses were designed to help students develop leader- ship and cultural understanding through mastery of communicative techniques and skills which are essential to a free interchange of ideas and sentiments in American society. An Speech activities, which are open to students of varying tal- ent - whether enrolled or not in speech courses - included dra- matic productions, debate and forensics, radio and television productions, and other public programs. Speech courses pro- vided a major or minor, in either the B.A. or the B. A. in Edu- cation degree, for the student who wishes to concentrate in one or more of the broad areas of public speaking, drama, and speech education. They had a tremendous turnout for the event. Officers included Gary Funberg, President, James Hornbeck, Vice Pres- ident and Margaret Mobley, Secre- tary. KHIB Spins 1 Hits On 92 FM Daily KHIB, after going through a major reorganization, was back on the air. New programs were added to the rep- ertoire. Theatre 10:05 was an old idea for national radio but a new one for the campus, Dr. Ben Chappell sponsored his oral interpretation classes once weekly for this radio theatre. Rod Hegy, station manager, rounded up people for interviews about the cam- pus. Sixty-two year old Fred Gates hit the air with a nostalgia program. But with all these programs, music and the familiar disc jockey prattle was not forgotten. Number one records were heard during the stationβs air time along with news, weather, sports, and special bulletins, KHIB carried the presidential election. Students ran KHIB with their faculty advisor Kirk Ashton. Spring station organizers were Rod Hegy, station manager; Mark Christian, program director; Lucy Flynt, news director with fall people; Bette Dunegan as controller and Jeff Hays, engineer. 6' Newspaper Gives (1) Steve Nichols writes headlines for newspaper as final touches are put on. They did everything from setting copy to a completed brochure. After being located in Morrison Hall for more than twenty-five years the Print Shop moved to a new location in the metals building. Through the years they obtained some of the finest and most updated equipment. About eighty-five percent of all the Univer- sity printing was done on the campus with hopes of increasing that figure to ninety-eight per- cent by the end of 1977. 160 Food Services Feed Hungry Hordes Each Day Hundreds of hungry students poured into the cafeteria, coffee shop, and sidewalk cafe for hot meals. The food services department provided good food at a reasonable cost. Tim Cornerβs crews kept the campus clean and spent hours putting the extra pol- ish on the building. Trees and grass were kept trimmed and raked, along with the shrubbery. Nurse Takes Care OfSOSU While Doctor Helps Part Time. Though the use of computers improved the situa- tion surrounding enrollment, it was still somewhat a trial of endurance to go through some of the long lines and proce- dures. With the advance of computer enrollment, the day long drudgery of enrollment for both the student and the business office was lessened. The office, located in the administration building was headed by Ernest Ayres. 1 RO Employees Have A Variety Of Responsibilites Making sure the correct grades are recorded on transcripts was one of the many important services rendered by the office of the Registrar. Transcripts of each candidate for graduation were screened carefully by the Registrar to make certain graduation requirements have been met. Records were maintained carefully by the staff in order to provide each student with max- imum service and enrollment checks. 1 RR 184 University Communications Paste-Ups Brochures Charlotte A. Although the program was designed to meet Indian education needs, there were no ethnic limitations on the use of facilities. Study plans were developed on an individual basis for those seeking to attain a higher educational level. The center was equipped with learning machines and indi- vidualized study stations so that one could work at an indi- vidual rate of speed. An instructor worked with each person in developing a program of study appropriate to his particular learning goals. Linda Cassiday Heads Indian Adult Education Talent Search sought to identify students from low-income families who have the desire and ability to pursue further education or special training. Students identified by the pro- gram were counseled individually about their special needs, post-secondary educational opportunities, and possible types of financial aid. The student was given assistance in com- pleting necessary paper work to apply for financial aid or educational programs. It sought students in Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Choctaw, Jefferson, Love, Marshall, McCurtain, Pushmataha, Latimer, and Leflore counties. I had been to school most all the time and could spell and read and write just a little, and could say the multiplication tables up to six times seven is thirty-five, and I don't reckon I could get any further than that if was to live forever. I donβt take no stock in mathematics, anyway . . . Mark Twain Just a few years ago, I stood with my friends and received my high school diploma before hundreds of misty-eyed par- ents and got what we all knew was a sure ticket to freedom. We accepted that diploma as if it were the passport to the universe. I thought I had conquered the world and it was mine. 71 A 'll Β« Eighteen years had given me the wisdom and maturity to know I might possibly need more information to reach those far-reaching stars. Southeastern State University was proba- bly the answer. The Grind began again - getting out of bed, going to class, writing a theme. I thought that this would be so different than it was when I watched the clock for recess. Although I still have many answers, I am not as independent as I thought. Friday is close at hand, and when it comes I can go home. Mom and Dad and all the family will be sitting on the front porch waiting. I have a feeling this highway is going to be traveled a lot in the future. And I bet Iβll know all the trees, rocks, bridges, and lakes on the way. n a DOOt u mr 7 No one warned me that things would be like this: That sometimes this kind of ideas would just never work or even exist. And I thought I knew it all. Maybe if I take stock, open my eyes. Iβll learn enough to become worldly yet. - It seems the world I had conquered back home is far away, and now an overnight bag stays packed to go down that highway with me at the drop of a hat. My views on home are changing; it used to be the place where I lived, but now itβs the place Iβm going to. They say that home is where the heart longs to be . . . Perhaps that may be true after all - or as Robert Frost said, Home is the place where when you have to go there, they have to take you in.'' 320 All day long, I see and talk to no one but the same people day in and day out. My habits may have changed, but I still have habits. The mold is hard to break, and I don't even know if I should try to break it. It is a comfortable rut, and I am protected, happy, and growing. This rut has become my world that I live in, and I am making my own little isolation booth from the outside. I am here to grow and learn how to cope. But, I get so involved with Southeastern that I tend to forget other places, other things, and other people. Those stars indeed seem farther away than ever. non Four years of security. Four years of learning and experiencing. Four years of time out of my life - my young life. And what have I learned. I thought that I had earned freedom. No one can stop me now, I had said. I took four years to get additional ammunition, and boy, am I glad. 324 I know now that freedom is what will never be handed to me on a silver platter. I have to earn it. It doesnβt just hap- pen , you have to pay for it with responsible actions. With what I have learned I realize that wisdom - true wis- dom - is an unattainable goal, but I must strike on to it as a goal. Soon I must move on. Southeastern has gotten me prepared for my future. But what direction will I take? what will I do? I think I know this time. Everything is coming up Magnolias. The Savage DATE: March 1, 1977 TO: The Student Body FROM: Julia D. Davis, Editor Well, another year has gone by. The people have changed, both in personality and character. The campus is a little older, new buildings are beginning and old ones are being dismantled. The leaves have changed from green to gold and are beginning to turn green again. Change has occurred, but have we noticed it? I think we have the external changes, but not the changes from within. The people on this campus are constantly changing. New faces appear each semester. Instructors leave and new ones take their places. But even with all the changes in the world, no one could change the fact that at Southeastern State University you get the best education possible. I donβt mean just book education, but people education. Learning to get along with people is the hardest education anyone has to go through and sometimes what you learned goes out the window. But if you ever find the secret it stays with you. Thatβs the best education you can get no matter where you go. Something happened to change my life this year - a group of wonderful people. They helped me get this book out and to you, but the most important thing they did was to become my friends. It is the hardest thing to do - to thank a friend. I sit here and wonder what to say and think of nothing that describes all the time and labor, and all the missed appointments, dates, and privacy they gave. I really want to thank Pam Armstrong, Suzi Reedus, Jeannett Price, and Marla Maze for being my staff. These women put in many hours of frustrating work to get their pages done. I especially appreciate the people who volunteered to work on the book. The photography was outstanding, and James Weaver, Tony Budzinsky, Rudy Manley, Lee Nichols, Nancy Blankenship, Laurel Bayless, Tuan Nguyen, De Anh, Ron DaVee, and Patty Russell contributed them all, except for the color pages. Jim Harmon really saved my life by letting me use his color slides, and Iβll always be grateful. Other people who helped and deserved thanks are Pamela Ashcraft, Charlotte Marsh, Brian Silver, Barry Ross, Dudley Turner, Renee Uri, Paula Claunch, Curtis Inge, Debbie Vinson, Debbie Kirkpatrick, Yolanda Bonds, Brenda McEntire, Debbie Giacomo, Debbie Pinsker, Kristie Trotter, Melinda Bell, Steve Nichols, and Laura Harryman. Another super-patient and helpful friend is Phil Baum, my Taylor Publishing Company Representative. Rudy Manley did a lot of proof reading for me and I owe him so much for it. Robert McGee spent many hours helping me after he got off work from his own job. Yearbook dedications went out of style many years ago, and it is a shame. If I canβt dedicate the entire yearbook to a very special person, Iβll dedicate my part - the work, time, and all the pages - I did. Kenneth Nichols taught me so very much about people. He spent time with me helping me to know myself, and know other people. Most of the changes in my life and outlooks were brought about by some way he influenced me, and I certainly apprecicate it. I canβt say enough about how much he has helped me and many, many more students on campus. Thank you, Ken, for two wonderful years as Savage Editor. Iβm sure that Southeastern will continue to grow and change long after we leave it. I know that the education received by us will change the world and make it a better place. With much appreciation, T Julia Daphne Davis
