He is certainly no newcomer to the football ranks. He was tutored by Charles Bud Wilkinson at the University of Oklahoma, where he lettered three years. During his tenure with the Sooner? he was chosen All Big-Seven tackle his junior year, and All Big-Seven guard his senior year. In 1954, he was selected to the College All-Star team. On the opening kick-off SSCs hard- hitting defense knocked loose the football and Norman West pounced on the rolling pigskin. In three plays the Savages rolled into the end zone with a perfect strike to open the scoring. Coach Brown's crew drove to another score with Duke Christian skirting the end after a beautiful fake, The sailors finally tied the score but the Savages wouldn't settle for it and they drove the length of th’e field. Then Earl Thomason carried over from the two for the first win of the season. SOUTHEASTERN 20, AUSTIN 6 The Southeastern Savages gleefully carried home the Katy Bell when they knocked off the Kangaroos with a fourth quarter rally. The Sherman horde drove 83 yards for the first score of the game. The hometowners waited till the second half to begin its scoring spree. Thomason intercepted a pass and quarterback Christian lifted a payoff pass info the hands of end Branson Metcalf to knot the score. From that point the Savages never touch- ed the brakes, posting two more six-pointers in the final period to carry away the second straight victory of the season. SOUTHEASTERN 14, OUACHITA 20 The Savages, seeking their third straight win, were upset as a last quarter rally was stopped by an interception on the enemy's two yard line. The home team held a big edge in the statistical department, keeping a decisive 20-12 edge in first downs. The visitors took the opening kick-off and drove for their first tally of the game. After starting from their own 44 the Savages marched to the enemy 10 when halfback Earl Thomason rammed the final yardage for the Savage TD. Branson Metcalf posted the other SSC six on an 18-yard pass from southpaw Charlie Johnston. SOUTHEASTERN 19, NORTHEASTERN 6 The Savages grabbed their first conference win against as many starts with Charlie Johnston sparking the first scoring drive against the enemy beginning at the Red- men's 42-yard line after a 32-yard punt return by the Savages' Blake Smiley. Fullback Jack Evans carried the final thirteen yards around right end to post the Savages' first score of the game. Johnston headed another drive of 36 yards wjth Granville Chandler carrying over for the second six. The Savages, to this time, had not been de- feated in conference play. The home team trounced the visitors with drives and one interception, which paid off for the three counters and the tell-tale twenty points. Five limes within the Savages' 20 yard line the inspired defense stop- ped the invaders cold for (he ultimate shut-out. Brown's crew marched 73 yards for the first Southeastern TD. The tally for the home team came when Duke Christian completely faked the defense and waltzed into the end zone untouched. The next points occurred when Darvis Cole picked up a fumble and rambled 31 yards for the score. With fifty seconds left to play David Fronterhouse grabbed off a loose football and traveled to pay- dirt for the last posting of the affair. The bright point of the home team was the pass- ing attack of quarterbacks Duke Christian and Charlie Johnston, who tapped the airways for 318 yards and three tallies. Statistic-wise the Savages made it a much better game than the final score showed, with the visiting crew win- ning in the first-down column 15-12. The Bronchos' powerhouse piled up 302 yards on the ground and 216 in the air for the 59 point massacre. End Jerry Bailey posted both of the visitors' counters taking a pair of aerials from Charlie Johnston and Duke Christian, respectively. The first Southeastern TD came at the end of an 85 yard drive when Bailey took the pitch from Johnston and dashed for the final 10 yards. Both scores came for $SC in the final quarter, the second one coming on a 15-yard aerial from Christian after traveling 53 yards in nine plays. Suflivan has been showered with honors during his lenure, pos- sibly reaching his highest point thus far when, in 1957, he was chosen NAIA Coach-ofohe-Year, Sullivan stands fifth among the nation's cage mentors in number of games won and rates third with his winning percentage of .770, Among the remainder of Sullivan's honors are such awards as being chosen to the Helm's Foundation Hall of Fame, and being picked as Ihe Oklahoma Collegiate Conference Coach-of-the-Year three times, Afso, Sullivan has won the conference championship more than any other coach, and his teams have appeared in the NAIA finals three times, trailing only Indiana State and Hamllne University in total games played in the big tournament. Before launching his fabulous career at Southeastern, Sullivan was an all-around athlete at Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he was named as halfback on the Tigers' Half-Century team. He attended SSC and Oklahoma A AA for his college degree and did some coaching at Stillwater with Hank Iba before returning to Durant.
