V «51 PRESIDENT’S O.P.F, Vet Village Student Union Automechanics Old Gymnasium Russell Amphitheater Southeastern State College joined with Durant September 14 and 15, 1957, in staging one of the most impressive Oklahoma semi-centennial celebrations. Dr. James D. Morrison, history professor and acting dean of instruction, served as general chairman and director of the city’s significant observance of the 100th anniversary of the noted Butterfield Overland Mail. An authentic four-horse stagecoach made a re-run of a portion of the famous route, from Atoka to Colbert, where an historical marker was dedicated. Stamp collectors in all parts of the country and in Canada sent in mail to be carried on the stagecoach and stamped with the special Butterfield cancellation. Mrs. Floy Perkinson Gates, head of the English department, was another Southeastern fac- ulty member who played a key role in the colorful two-day celebration. Mrs. Gates served as chairman of the Pioneer Homecoming event, in which Mr. and Mrs. John Butterfield of 1357” were selected from candidates representing southern Oklahoma and northern Texas towns. With the Butterfield historical celebration coinciding with the opening week of the fall term at Southeastern, the office of the dean of instruction had double duties, serving as Butterfield headquarters and as an enrolment center.
