COACH DAVE STEVENS 'w w Southeasternk Savages who were picked to finish last in the pre-season polls surprised everyone, including Coach Dave Stevens, and needed only a win over East Central in their last outing of the season for a share of the conference title. Austin College was the Savages, first foe and after being held to a 14-7 halftime lead, the Kangys exploded for 27 points in the second half as their weight and experience wore down the smaller Savages. Northeastern, perennial Oklahoma Colleglate Conference champions, were the next toughies 0n the Savages, schedule and they were installed as three-to-five touchdown favorites over SSC. However, when the smoke had cleared from Paul Laird Field, the Savages had battled the Redmen to a 7-7 tie. Southeastern journeyed to Edmond the next week to take on Central State, the pre-season favorite. The Savages were keyed high for this game and came out on the long end of a 21-13 count. Half-back Jiggs McVay blasted over for all three touchdowns. Next, the Savages ruined the Northwestern Homecoming by drubbing the Rangers. at Alva 14-0. End Bill McClain and McVay got the Tds for Southeastern. The Savages were beaten in out-of-state contests 21-0 by Ouachita and 6-0 by Southern State, both Arkansas teams. Southeastern edged Southwestern 7-6 to stay in title contention, but lost the homecoming game 7-0 to East Central. Southeastern,s record for the season was three wins, four losses and one tiewgood enough for second place in the conference. gin BILL McCLAIN u. Jumping right from the practice floor into tournamentiplay was a big step for the Savages, but they came through in fine style by going into the finals before bowing by one point to the host team, Weyland College. A swing through Arkansas netted the Savage squad four straight victories before they felt the pains of defeat again. They mauled an under-par Arkansas College team and then swept a two-game series from highy-touted Arkansas State. Before losing two straight games to the wonder boys at Arkansas Tech the Savages took the measure of a good Memphis Air Station five. Next on the list was a return match with Wayland College and the Savages avenged their one-point set-back by taking a double header in easy fashion. Just before the New Year 5505 basketballers added another trophy to their collection by winning the McNeese invitational tournament at Lake Charles, Louisiana. After only five conference games the Savages had gained undisputed second place in1 conference play with four victories and only one defeat. Southeastern held wins over Southwestern, Northwestern, OBU, and Northeastern. The only loss on 5505 slate was to conference-leading Central State. Southeastern took time out from their conference race to play host to the World Champion Peoria Catterpillars. Although clearly outm'atched, the Savage cagers played a fine game. Two former Savage basketball players, Warren Womble and Kirby Minter, were with the champs. With ten games left in conference play as we go to press, the Savages have a 50-50 chance to come out on top in the conference race.
