E+ .X-. -.2.-.ifzafzii ,.3?:Skzz2:z:2 The SMU yearbook's name-Schrimshaw-was chosen in 1967 when a committee ot SMU administrators and student senators reviewed the entries of a campus-wide contest to name the yearbook. The winning entry was 'Schrimshawf lt was the perfect title for the yearbook of a college in the middle of a sea-faring community where the art of schrimshaw originated, said Donald C. Howard, Dean ot Students, who was one of the judges on the committee. The art of schrimshaw was developed in the early part of the nineteenth century by American sailors to express their creative interests. Sailors careful- ly carved delicate images of ships, whales, and seascapes on shells, bones, and pieces of ivory. The art pieces captured the sailors' memories of their sea voyages. So it is with Schrimshaw-creating a yearbook is done in the same manner. The staff carefully collects photographs and written articles then organizes them into a book which captures the moments of students' years of earning a college education.
