A MESSAGE FRGIVI THE PRESIDENT February 2, 1988 To the Class of '88: The term Janus-faced has come to mean two-faced, deceitful. Perhaps this is because the Roman god Janus was in fact usually represented as having two faces of contrasting aspect. lt is unfortunate that few people remem- ber that Janus was the god of doorways, beginnings, and the rising and setting of the sun. Janus-faced, if the term were to be true to the character of the god, should, in consequence, mean at the thresholdg looking forward and backward, inside and outg aware of beginnings and endings, contrast and polarity like dawn and dusk. l suspect the symbol of Janus represents in a profound way your own condition, your own perspective at the close of your college career. Past and future, the inter- nal and the external, the alternating rhythms of life are more immediate, more present at certain times. And this should be one.
