Days and weeks of seemingly futile protest did not prevail, and the underlying issue was not actually resolved. The growth of what some felt to be concrete intransigeance was ac- companied by the growth of concrete structures as a new city of academia rose in the woods of North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. 3 I

The undergraduate years of the class of 1971 were also the years of sudden departure of lu- minaries from the American scene - Dr. Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert F. Kenne- dy were dispatched to their deaths by fanatics who ultimately did harm to their own politi- cal causes, but not before doing perhaps irreparable harm to the vitality and stability of the American nation. Activism, even that of a non-violent nature, quickly led to repression, the mood of the na- tion changed, and the lifestyles of opportunists underwent similar changes. Controversial figures, viewed in some quarters of the university as being substitutes for the lost lumi- naries, were also dispatched, although -in a more subtle manner.

In one respect at least, it was to have one ofthe attributes ofthe traditional university, that ofthe diversity of attitudes in regard to it. Some felt it characterized by pervasive despair, others attained an inscrutable neutralism in regarding it, still others were content to wallow happily in an unorganized and chaotic .statufs quo. It has been alleged that all new institutions suffer from growing pains, but a dispassion- ate observer could not help but speculate on whether those in power at SMU were really at reat ains to row. 2 P 3
