' Ki SCRIMSHAW southeastern massachusetts technological institute at north dartmouth Message From President Driscoll Four short years ago, the vast majority of the members of the class of 1969 began their college careers. I am sure there have been many times during your period as stu- dents when it seemed to you that your college education would never be completed. However, the years do, in fact, go by quickly and all of you having successfully com- pleted your courses of study, with few exceptions, are now leaving campus life behind you. The future occupations and pursuits you will now undertake will vary greatly. It may appear to you, with a new diploma in hand, that the years ahead are many and the time to achieve is long. This is an illusion many graduates, unfortunately, mistake for a picture of reality. In fact, the most common experience you will find is that the years ahead of you, the years of productivity and the years of contribution, seem constantly to go by more swiftly. You will, one day perhaps, look back on your life ' s career much as, perhaps now, you look back on your college career. It is then that one begins to realize what is meant by time being precious and fleeting. I hope when each of you turns to take that look that you will feel a sense of gratification and satisfaction for having been someone who has made some co ntribution to bettering mankind ' s life on this planet. Those of you who will be able to enjoy that experience and that memory will understand the fun- damental meaning of success. To all of you - I wish the best of everything and, above all, a good life. V tor Joseph L. Driscoll, President a definition of the word beautiful . . . To the current and prevailing generation the word beautiful refers not to a person ' s exterior features but, rather, to those in- terior qualities which in total add up to an individual of warmth and worth, of heart and soul. The editors and staff are proud to dedi- cate the 1969 Scrimshaw to two beautiful people. To SMTI ' s first Dean of Women- Miss Mary Louise Walsh Remarkable in your achievements, a lady of taste and style, a sophisticate in the real sense of that term — your ability in the classroom as a teacher has earned you the dual respect of both faculty and students. Becoming Dean of Women at a nearly all male institution and creating almost singlehandedly a place for women at a technological institute has been no easy task. Yet, in your role as administrator and teacher, you have not only fulfilled that charge, but you have served well as a model, guide and mentor for anyone who approached your door. Because such graciousness is an asset to any age we, your students, salute you with affection and say ' ' Thank you. I Donald C. Howard, Dean of Men — Councilor, Confidant, Advocate, and Friend Since your arrival at the SMTI educational community, you have defended student ' s rights, both helped and guided organizations and individuals. In times of crises, you have spoken with eloquence and force for the in- stitution, its principals of learning and academic free- dom. You richly deserve the respect and emulation that you have accrued. Among colleagues you are a re- spected administrator; among students you are loved. a 10 III II Ui II III m 01 m Nil III 1234567810000000 BOARD OF TRUSTEES ROBERT W. This was not the show I had written, but the reality behind it: below me a small army— twenty stagehands, dressers, stage managers, prop men, electricians— swarmed around Annie and Hank in a fever of preparations; on warning they melted into the ground, and the curtain rose on the two actors alone in their stage-set world with their fictional chatter; at the end of the scene the blackout curtain fell, worklights glared on the twin shells of rooms swinging in counterpoint off and on and roundabout like carousels, repopulated in motion by a tide of anonymous work- ers who obscured our stars now in the hands of their dressers making frantic ten-second changes of costume; on warning, everything real again vanished, and only the illusion remained in the rise of the curtain. To create this illusion we were break- ing each other ' s hearts, digestive systems, and brainpans . . . •William Gibson, The Seesaw Log 103 Philadelphia Here I Come brian fri ( ■jj jHr  ...■■...w ..-- M 1 B If 1 ► , x .- X kV ' V .■■mr - ' Jm ra fc % $ ■v ■i « • • e •  • • aPls bertold brecht kurt weil m r a 4 . 1 Mr 1 n !
