Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute at North Dartmouth Nlessoge From President Driscoll The members of the graduating class of 1968 may feel, together with many other students of other colleges also leaving the academic world at this time, some apprehension as to what lies ahead in life for them. Your class is a part of a generation which has exhibited a genuine concern with the major issues with which man is confronted in the second half of the twentieth century. Large numbers of your generation have participated as activists in a number of man-serving noble organ- izations such as the PEACE CORPS and VISTA. A number of you will also serve in these, or similar humanitarian ventures. Clthers will defend, protect and foster our nation and its ideals by serving proudly as members of the Armed Forces of the United States. Perhaps some of you over time will have the honor of serving man and nation through both military and civilian organizations. I do hope each of you has made a personal commitment to contribute to the well-being of mankind and the preservation and further development of the demo- cratic ideal, thus helping to make our world a better, richer and safer place for all human beings. Do hold fast to your ideals and exercise continually an active commitment to help bring those ideals closer to reality. As you work for and toward the achievement and perfection of the ideals to which you are committed, remember to be charitable toward yourselves when you encounter reversals, as well as persevering, in order that you may also realize successes. You have ahead of you some difficult and trying times, as did the classes and generations which preceded you. Most have done better than we gave them credit for. If each of you does his or her share, and many others do theirs, your generation will be admired now and, perhaps, for centuries to come. Man, however dimly he sees it and realizes it at this moment, has the capacity for the first time in history to arrest and, possibly, eliminate, the ravaging effects which are the works of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. You have a role to play in helping men and societies use this capacity effectively. For as long as you bend your efforts to the achievement of that goal, you will live exciting and rewarding lives. I wish you well. I wish you happiness and accomplishment. , , ,WA 1 5. :H -n f : -,Q 2 , gi' 5 T1 ew- ,xx 'fiwf l .0 Doctor Jose v r v + s, iq: Qi l ,I Dedication DR. WALTER J. In this age of the computer and the psychedelic movement, the administrators have been overwhelmingly successful in adhering to the traditional standards of education. Their attitude is well reflected by the contemporary buildings which house them. These men are striving forward with just the right amount of conservatism that is needed to maintain the elements of a solid and functional education. DIAS Standard-Times Music Critic The newly founded SMTI Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Josef Cobert, made an auspicious debut last night, in Dartmouth High School Auditor- ium, with a stimulating pro- gram. For the historical occasion, Prof. Cobert chose to perform Mozart's Overture to the Ab- duction from the Seragliof' Brahms' Serenade in D Ma- jor, and Sir William Walton's 1922 musical delight, Facade, with Prof. Vernon L. Ingraham and Richard H, Reis, of SMT'I's English department, reciting the Edith Sitwell poetry. The Mozart overture, which opened the program aims pri- marily at establishing the Turkish atmosphere of the op- era, an ever youthful and en- dearing work, which it intro- duces. Devotees of Mozart will recall that he had earlier donned this amusing Turkish fashion in the , Piano Concerto in A Ma- jor.' . Prof. Cobert and his orches- tra, comprising former mem- bers of the New Bedford and Fall River Symphonies and oth- er competent instrumentalists from Southeastern 'Massachu- setts, played the work with style and exuberance after a somewhat shaky beginning by the strings - a shakiness that never again intruded in the re- mainder of the program. Verses Clever, Catchy Facade, which is billed as an entertainment, is a spright- ly blend of musical horseplay and verbal satire, scored for a small chamber ensemble Cflute, piccolo, clarinet and bass clar- inet, saxophone, trumpet, and percussionb, with the Sitwell verses, clever and catchy, re- cited in strict meter to instru- mental acompaniment. Both Prof. Ingraham and Prof. Reis are scholarly exponents of modern poetry in the class- room: consequently, each was at home in the verbal acrobatics of Dame Edith's prosody. Clad in silk hats, frock coats, and dress trousers, the two ,acade- mlcians resembled a couple of late-Victorian swells out of the pages of The Importance of Be- ing Earnest. With admirable support from the ensemble, they brought out 1n their readings all sorts of queer, delightful rhythms, cross- rhythms, and unexpected and hlghly effective stabbing ac- cents. In the 14 poems they read Cthere are 21 in the originalb, they were equally efficacious whether speaking of the tall Spanish jade, the Capitaneo, braggard braggodocioj' or Sir Beelzbub calling for his syl- labub in the hotel in Hell. Aside from the spirited per- formance of the two readers, I was impressed by Walton's deft orchestration, particularly in the charming Polka and there- markable Jodelling Song. Affords Charm - Brahms' Serenade in D Major, which concluded the program, was the composer's second orchestral work -- its predecessor being the Piano Concerto No. 1 Even though its six movements seem a bit diffuse and lack much contrast in mood and tempo, the piece is not without its ruminative charm. Although it is a classically in- spired selection, it demands warmth in the phrasing of its melodies, and Prof. Cobert's reading had this warmth in abundance. In fact, this was the orchetra's best playing of the night, with clarity of texture and a commendable dynamic range. ' Dr, Joseph L, Driscoll, presi- dent of SMTI. welcomed the good-sized audience and ex- pressed his delight that the col- lege's ever-expanding facilities now boast a svmphonic en- semble. Judging by the caliber of last night's performance, his enthusiasm is justified. S T S mpheny De ut s Brilliant Event By MARION FLANIGAN A new constellation rose over Dartmouth plains Sunday night, as the SMTI Symphony, in its debut concert, oilered elegant Mozart, transcendent Brahms, and, in a smaller ensemble, a polished and campy treatment of the Walton-Sitwell divertisse- ment, Facade Josef Cobert conducted. Vig- orous, demanding, and unremit- ting in his musicianship, he drew the 52 musicians together in a fine, clear, balanced ensemble. The string section, well stocked to begin with, worked conscious- ly toward the one-voice effect, and especially in the Brahms, responded to Co-bert's eloquent left hand. The Brahms Serenade in D Major was quite exciting, be- cause it projected the wonderful dualism of that master. His inimitable free-fall quality re- 'is-f . sounded in the Iirst movement and the rising melodic break- throughs of the waltz-like scherzo. On the other hand, his labyrinthine searches were rendered with true sensitivity. Delicious Quandary f'How shall I get out of this delicious quandary? the music seemed to say, and answered, so to speak, Renounce all re- gret, or, as Rossetti's great line has it, Love on, who cares? Who cares? Love on! Cobert's reading is full of heart, and he succeeded in bringing forth a warm, dimensional performance. The Mozart Seraglio Overture was fine, too, with a vigorous, shimmering quality, crisp, uni- fied attacks, and high tension in the climaxes. By way of contrast, Facade is a commentary, not on es- sences, but on appearances. Dame Edith Sitwell collaborated with the young William Walton over 30 years ago in this so- phisticated lacing-out of post- Victorian society, with its po- lite vulgarities, It is said that people walked out on the first performance, but no one walked out last night. The avant-garde of the Twenties have become the quaint humanist beacons of the Sixties. Chilly Quality The score is brilliant, in its discursive way, the ensemble was splendid, The poems are also delightful, with an under- current of decay. Ladies, time dies, warned Professor Rich- ard H. Reis, in an appropriately sepulchral tone, and later, in the nostalgic Jodelling Song : achieved a touching, chilly quality. Equally well-spoken were the 'poems read by Professor Ver- non L, Ingraham, whom Ham- let himself would congratulate fm- the precision of Thetis, wrote a treatise noting wheat is silver like the sea: the lovely cheat is sweet as foam, and so on. The difficult rhythms, of the Tango Pasodoble and the Scotch Rhapsody were beautiful- ly observed. Both professors seemed to have a' good time, and so did the audience. Special compliments on the. at- tractive program which reprints Facade in full, a literary keepsake. SMTI president Joseph L. Driscoll welcomed the 8'-195fS to an occasion that marked a musical renascence for SMTI and for the whole area- 49 ,P , E 1521. For out of that decision will flow influences that may well have a profound effect upon your life here as a student, and even beyond your years of college. In making your decision, you must determine what value the fraternal experience will hold for you as an individual. Ideally, those values from which each individual derives his sense of value are still inherent in the aims and purposes of the fraternal system. Realistically, however, the promotion of such values as responsibility, ambition, high moral and spiritual standards, is by no means guaranteed any member of any fraternal organization-and only too often can critics cite evidence to the contrary. What then can you as an individual expect of a fraternity? You can expect opportunity, and nothing more. The opportunities for supplementary educational experience within a fraternal group are many. The development of greater self-reliance and leadership, the acquiring of social poise and confidence can be your gain, if you avail yourself of the opportunities provided. But with these opportunities comes the challenge of responsibility- to SMTI, the community, your fellow students-for the standards and actions of your group as well as for yourself. And neither your standards nor those of the organization will be any higher, or the actions any more beneficial, than those of the least responsible and least worthy member of the fraternity or sorority you select. james B. Conant, former President of Harvard University, once said that the most important single factor in a modern liberal education is education which students receive from one another. This is the essence of fraternity, the intangible binding together of mind and spirit in a relationship of personal commitment to one another. And from it your greatest lessons in life can be learned. Do not take lightly the task that is before you. Be wise in your judgments, and base them on what has depth and substance, not on that which is superficial. And be prepared to expect no more from your fraternal experience than you are willing to give. k Dofzfzlfi C. Hozmm' IIE! Deniz of Men j 'A KAPPA PHI Offiria! Misunderstood by student, faculty, administration andheven, at times, its own staff during the decade and two since its inception as a weekly news sheet. The Talker has fluxed between being concerned mainly with humor, student opinions, topical comment and again finds itself in a transitional stage. This year has shown another building of the Talker organism. The weekly remains the basic life structure, however adding onto it are, freshman staff with editions of their own, and a quarterly production. Remaining paramount as the policy of the Talker is freedom of the press. No matter what direction the publication takes, whichever path it pursues, it is the freedom of the press which shall be its guiding principle. The 1967-68 Basketball Season brings to mind the most exciting and gratifying season of our young uni- versity. The Corsairs were not registered in a conference this year and we were hoping an impressive season would merit a bid for the coming years. With this thought pressing in mind, Coach Wetterland, Assistant Coach Drewniak, and the boys on the squad set out to beat the top small college teams in New England and displayed fine competitive prowess in defeat. The team never had a let-down throughout the season, spirits were continually highly competitive, and for this, we will long remember their effort.
