Members of that first class of 1925 would hardly recognize today’s com- puter based registration procedure. Despite improvements over the years, however, little seems to change about registration. Though a much speedier process these days, registra- tion remained for 1975-76, another of the boring, but entirely necessary, facets of life at Southeastern. Long days’ work completed, new books in hand, and yet other groups of students were off, with new resolu- tion, to a new round of classes. Activities 19 Sorority Rush The welcoming atmosphere of the Panhellenic party and the warm casualness of the informal parties opened sorority rush. The secluded intimacy of the theme parties and the decisions at the preference parties added to that fun, maddening time known as sorority rush. The potential pledge began to learn something about sorority life at the theme parties. Then followed the preference parties where rushees went to list first and second choices. Finally, on that exciting day, bids were issued amid the cheers of members and pledges alike. The pledge had found her place in a new circle of intimate friends. = Gate pE Pe Tai Ee, ee e2a 00 62% Pees ee bet eee Ae te oe eee a bea 6848 0 Pores © Ge ee 4 +e eee 22 SSS seeee 20 Activities eens Zi Activities 21 Southeastern’s seven social frater- nities were again busy during the first two weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters ‘‘rushing’’ potential mem- bers. For openers, the Greek organiza- tions placed booths in the Student Union Mall displaying the fraternity’s achievements over the past several years. Trophies, girl friends, pictures, and enthusiastic talk marked the booths. 22 Activities Fraternity Rush Real recruiting, however, was reserved for the ‘‘keggers’’ and sup- pers. At these gatherings, which were held almost nightly throughout “rush,’” future Greeks were given an opportunity to explore the various organizations and select the one that most nearly fit their personal needs. Following the rounds of parties, bids were issued and yet another group of young collegians were in- ducted into the Greek system. 4, a 7 reat ®t mala ies Class Elections Apathy again marked the annual Fall ritual Known as class officer elections. Less than 500 students cast ballots in the elections which were devoid of issues. Freshman and sophomore office seekers generally livened up the con- test. Some banners did flutter in the hot September air, and election day was marked by candidates seeking support from passersby in the Student Union area. Each class elected a president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, commuter senator and sweetheart. Run-off elections were required in a few of the races. The Student Government Associ- ation sponsored the class officer bal- loting. 24 Activities 25 ivities Act 26 Activities Homecoming 197 Petite, auburn haired beauty Janice Irwin reigned as Queen of Homecoming for 1975. The junior from Metairie was elected to the honor by her fellow students in bal- loting conducted by the Student Government Association. Chosen as maids for the 1975 Homecoming court were: Beryl Brannon of New Orleans; Joy Cham- bers of Baton Rouge; Patti Thompson of Metairie; Susan Barrett of New Concord, Ohio; Ida Sonnier of Port Sulphur; and Marlene Helmers of New Orleans. The queen and her court we featured on a special float in t Homecoming Parade. As a highlight g| the afternoon’s football game, Mi Irwin and her court were official presented. Escorting the court ont field were members of Kappa Delf Tau fraternity. Miss Irwin was honored again the Alumni Association’s Homé| coming dance where she was officialf crowned as Queen of the 1975 Home coming festival. } | fe Perea = eae. ‘tet, lt Fog Activities 27 28 Activities Homecoming Pageantry Color, pageantry, fun and excite- ment were hallmarks of the Home- coming celebration. The campus was decorated exten- sively to honor returning graduates. In addition to decorations provided by the residence halls, a number of aca- demic departments prepared special Homecoming displays. Participants in the Student Acti- vities Board sponsored window painting contest decorated the huge plate glass windows of the Student Union Building. The annual Homecoming parade, planned and sponsored by Alpha Omicron Pi social sorority, was a high- light of Homecoming weekend. Top entries in the parade included the float built by the St. Albert’s Student Board, which was judged ‘‘Most Original; Delta Tau Delta’s float which copped the ‘Most Beautiful” prize; and Delta Omicron’s “Most Beautiful Car” entry. Winning floats were brought into Strawberry Stadium where they added color to the Homecoming Football game. Activities 29 Homecoming Excitement The campus was alive for Home- coming ‘75! This year’s observance of homecoming was attended by the largest crowds ever—and more activities were offered than before. The Alumni Association, with much assistance from student organi- zations, sponsored numerous activities which added up to a busy week for all. In addition to the traditional bonfire, dormitory displays, home- coming parade, and football game, there were other special events. For the sports minded, there was a golf tournament, tennis tournament, “night at the races,” and a bass tournament. As usual, the Alumni House was headquarters for the celebration. At the Homecoming Luncheon, out- standing alumni, distinguished faculty, and special friends of the University were honored. In short, Homecoming 1975 was a grand reunion for those who cherish Southeastern and the memories their alma mater evokes. mmr aul i, nk, of = ttt 30 Activities Activities 31 Che Sewerl well ie Bandstand USA Over 600 students turned out for the third annual “‘Bandstand USA” sponsored by the ROTC Cadet Corps. The late Fifties hop, a takeoff on the popular TV show American Band- stand, was a masterfully coordinated affair complete with “Click Clark; Top Ten Board; dancing; best dressed and trivia contests; the Limbo rock; song pantomimes; and Rate-A-Record. Pony-tailed girls with bobby sox and saddle oxford shoes danced the “‘twist’’ with guys wearing leather jackets and sporting duck-tails resplen- dent with ‘‘greasy kid stuff.” Students cheered as their favorite songs of the era were introduced by “Click Clark’’ who added tidbits of information about the early rock and roll artists. ies 33 Activi ised allan et aetna mig el 34 Activities eiehoeeT wh Honors Convocation Southeastern Louisiana Univer- sity honored its outstanding students at the annual Honors Convocation, one of the highlights of the Fall Semester. Honored at the Convocation were students on a sophomore level or above who have maintained a “’B”’ or better average; members of the Thirteen Club, Southeastern’s own honor society; and members of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. Guest speaker for the gathering was Dr. John C. Stevens, president of Abilene Christian College. A record number of students were honored at the Convocation which was followed by a social recep- tion for the honorees, members of their families, and friends. Activities 35 Best Dressed Coed Miss Marlene Hellmers, a sopho- more from New Orleans, claimed the title ‘‘Best Dressed and Most Out- standing Co-ed at Southeastern.”” The contest, sponsored by Student Government Association, attracted over 30 contestants. Miss Hellmers represented Southeastern in GLAMOUR MAGAZINE’S annual search for the nation’s top ten best dressed and most outstanding collegiate co-eds. The entrants were judged in two outfits, One appropriate for campus 36 Activities wear and the other for off-campus outings. Contestants were also judged on their poise and ability to answer questions posed by the judges, as well as their amount of involvement in campus activities. Named as finalists in the pageant were: Sally Ott, of Baton Rouge, first runner-up; Gwen Smith, also of Baton Rouge, second runner-up; Suzanne Caldwell, of Gretna, third runner-up; and Lisa Stevens, of Hammond, fourth runner-up. Originally staged during the summer, ‘1776’ proved to be so popular that it was repeated during the fall semester ‘by popular demand.” Sellout crowds were the trade mark for ‘’1776, a production which earned plaudits from practically all who saw the show. The musical was presented through the joint efforts of the Department of Music and the Department of Speech and Drama. ‘1776’ ushered in the 1975-76 theatre season on campus and was a particularly appropriate selection during the nation’s bicentennial year. pan ae % AND ARYL. A ivi Act The tragedy that befell Mrs. Abra- ham Lincoln following the assassina- tion of her husband was vividly recreated on the SLU stage with the Fall production of James Prideaux’s “The Last of Mrs. Lincoln.” This historically accurate retelling of Mrs. Lincoln’s story was ably directed by Mrs. Vonnie Borden. Mary Ann Speck, who played the role of “Mrs. Lin coln,” contributed a strong lead to the production. Other cast members were David Hughes, Curtis Holly, Richard Crain, Chuck. Morse, Linda Montgomery, Sheila Sirgo, Bill McGibboney, Tim McGowan, Patsy. Fleming, Carol Bauerle, Cliff Walker, Mike Parker, and George Russell. The show’s director, Dr. Anna Deanne Teague, set the play in the 1970’s to lend more relevance to the characterization of “jet set’’ women. The beautifully directed comedy sported an all female cast—a first for the SLU stage. Members of the cast were: Terry Coleman, Carolyn’ Stephens,.- Teri Schnupp, Carol Bauerle, Cara Klieger, Gina Montalbano, Diane Loupe, Biddie Griffith, Patsy Fleming, Karen Arthur and Crystal Threeton. Also, Linda’ Montgomery, Liesa Smith, Evelyn Holloway, Lorrie Schneider, Beth Shamburger, Susan Anglada, Rhonda Alessi, Karen Sibley, Helen Sinagra, Malka Alberts, and Myra Catalanatto. Activities 45 Captain Lovelock And Gallantry A musical highlight of the Fall semester was the presentation of ‘‘An Evening of Musical Comedy”’ by the SLU Music Theatre. Directing the pro- gram was Franklin Summers. Featured were the short operas, ‘“Captain Lovelock’’ by Ludvig Holberg, and ‘’Gallantry,’’ a spoof on a television soap opera. In the casts for the two operas were: David Askegren, John Vernon, Rebecca Causey, Alan Gentiles, Melodye Curtis, Sharon Goff, Kathy Ellis, Donna Carney, and Theresa Ballard. 46 Activities Merry Wives Of Windsor The musical version of William Shakespeare’s ‘‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ was the Spring offering of the Southeastern Music Theatre. Franklin Summers was director of the show which was produced with full costumes and orchestra. Dr. Robert Weatherly conducted the orchestra. Leading cast members included Jeffery Wells who played the role of the jolly, would-be suitor, “’Falstaff,”’ and Judy Krogsgard, Mary Beth McMurray, Donna Carney, Kathy Ellis, John Vernon, Fred Richards, Gordon Jeansonne, Jude Wilson, Alan Gentiles and Carlo Giacone. Activities 47 General Lectures And Concerts Five productions were included in the 1975-76 General Lectures and Concerts Series sponsored annually by the University. Entertaining enthusiastic audi- ences during the year were: the Rhode Island Dance Repertory Company; actress and mime Stephanie Rich; violinist Mark Kaplan; the Concordia Choir; and the New Shakespeare Company. Highly acclaimed violinist Mark Kaplan, one of the nation’s finest 48 Activities young violinists, presented a virtuoso performance in the University Audi- torium. A national prize winner for his prowess on the violin, Kaplan performed brilliantly for eastern’s music devotees. Miss Stephanie Rich recreated the eccentric and notorious Sarah Bernhardt in her one-woman show. A student of famed French mime Marcel Marceau, she offered a brilliant creation, “Echoes Of,’’ which reflected her training under the French master. South- Not merely a choir but a natiol| distinction, the Concordia Choir) Moorhead, Minn., brought to Sou} eastern one of the greatest a cappe sounds in the nation. The Concor Choir, which has played to audient around the world, presented selecti¢ which covered the history of cho music back to the time of Bach. 7 67 voice choir received high accla from Southeastern’s audience for magnificent performance. Mark Kaplc Stephanie Rich Concordia Choir Nt Two of the year’s most popular General Lectures and Concerts Series offerings were productions by the Rhode: Island Dance Company and The New Shakespeare Company of San Francisco. The eight-member Rhode Island Dance Company combined narration and movement with ingenious crea- tivity in their Southeastern perform- ance. The show was inventive, visually appealing and intrinsically beautiful. The New Shakespeare Company of San Francisco presented William Shakespeare’s ‘‘As You Like It’’ toa delighted audience. The play was delivered much as_ Shakespeare’s works were offered in old England. The Company seeks through its pro- ductions, to return Shakespeare to the rambunctious throngs who, in the 1590's, ‘paid their penny to sit in the pit and be entertained.”’ Employing colorful sets, en- chanting costumes, and thorough pro- fessionalism, the Company brought the Southeastern audience to its feet with applause numerous times during the memorable show. 5C Activities sde Island Dance Company Activities 51 The universal appeal of the Har- iem Globetrotters was proven once again when the “clown princes of basketball” brought their special entertainment magic to the campus of Southeastern. The show, sponsored by the Stu- dent Activities Board, attracted an appreciative audience composed of SLU students and Globetrotter fans of all ages from surrounding communi- ties. The usual Globetrotter antics, now familiar to the millions who have seen the group either in person or on television, still managed to evoke Globetrotters laughter and applause from the South- eastern audience. Now celebrating their 50th anni- versary, the Globetrotters continue to blend perfectly both real basketball talent and comedic expertise. Perhaps what makes all Globetrotter perform- ances so popular is the fact that the men on the court always treat their fans as if they were something special. They want people to enjoy the evening as much as they do—and their fun is contagious. The Southeastern audience signaled its approval of the show with rousing applause when the act came to an end. Activities 53 . ax fa Juki ates LST SIM iia SF aa Rap Se ERS Crowd Pleasers Three stimulating, creative indi- viduals, all specialists in widely differ- ent fields, captivated Southeastern audiences at performances during the 1975-76 school year. Singer and social commentator Arlo Guthrie, a pop song writer with deep roots in American folk music, entertained as part of the Student Activities Board’s Big Name entertain- ment series. Guthrie laced his musical program with pointed observations about today’s students. Also a Student Activities Board highlight was sponsorship of the visit of famed anthropologist Margaret Mead to the campus. The delightful 75-year-old author and lecturer traced the recent history of the American university movement in her speech heard by a “standing room only” crowd. Marshall McLuhan, a_ prolific writer who made the word “‘media’”’ a household one through his many books published over the last two decades, spoke on “‘Why Johnny Can’t Read’’ to a large Southeastern audi- ence. McLuhan’s visit to the campus was part of Southeastern’s expanding program in the humanities. 54 Activities + ' t 56 Activities | Up With People A rambunctious, enthusiastic group of beautiful young entertainers, otherwise known as ‘Up With People” performers, entertained a small, but highly enthusiastic crowd early in the Spring Semester. Sponsored by the Student Activi- ties Board, the “Up With People’’ show featured the talents of over 50 college-age performers who sang, danced and laughed their way into the hearts of the Southeastern audience. The group’s fast paced, action packed show moved rapidly from number to number leaving the audi- ence stunned with the liveliness and beauty of it all. Audience participa- tion was a big factor in the show’s suc- cess, and hand clapping and toe tapping were the order of the night. The “Up With People” perform- ers offered selections which reflected a deep optimism in the youth of the nation and the world. The well chosen songs were pointed and moving and called for a rededication to “... people, the best sort of folks to know!” Activities 57 58 Activities University Dancers Spring Concert The University Dancers, SLU’s modern dance group, presented a specially commissioned ballet at the annual Spring Concert. The ballet, “‘Owaisee and the Witch,” was choreo- graphed by Mrs. Katie-Planche Friedrichs, dance director. Original music for the ballet was composed by Robert Priez of the Music faculty. The ballet was commissioned 5 area Bicentennial committees. “Feet of Clay,’’ choreographe by Eleanor Durham; and “Wake America: A Time for Decisio choreographed by Ann Bentz, weft other ballets presented at the conce | os by Steve Peterka Monkey Business For the second straight year, the Southeastern community was treated to a live Marx Brothers inspired show. This year’s production, entitled “Monkey Business,’”’ brought back memories of the zany Marx brand of comedy so popular with earlier gener- ations. Sponsoring the show was the Student Activities Board. Moving force behind the comedy was Wayne Weidig who served as director and producer. Weidig was ably assisted by a host of Marx Brothers buffs who spent long hours on the original pro- duction. Performances, staged in_ the Mathematics Building Auditorium, were well attended by enthusiastic audiences. Activities 59 Student Government Association elections elicited considerable atten- tion during the Spring Semester. As a preliminary to the regular election of officers, students were first asked to vote on a new constitution which radically changed the SGA officer and Student Senate structure. Major provisions of the new constitu- tion were elimination of the Coed Vice-President position and reap- portionment of the Senate. Senators are now elected by academic depart- ments instead of by organizations as was provided for in the old constitu- 60 Activities SGA Elections Elections to the post of SGA President and Vice-President brought out a rather large field with four candidates filing for each post. After initial balloting, and a run-off, Robin Passman was elected SGA President and Pat Edwards was elected as SGA Vice-President. During the same election, stu- dents voted in favor of a new self- assessment fee structure. The chief issue in this referendum was a con- siderable increase in self-assessment for Big Name Entertainment. —— i Sete. ey St Loe Strawberry Jubil The annual Strawberry Jubilee, a day-long event featuring two of Louisiana’s favorite dishes—Tangipa- hoa Parish’s famed strawberries and a traditional favorite, red beans and rice—attracted thousands. Lines quickly formed on the lawn near the Student Union Building as members of the Student Activities Board, spon- sors of the event, began to dish out the free food to all comers. A highlight of the festival was a huge, beautiful cake elaboratel y decorated with a Bicentennial motif. Thousands of slices were served from the cake which dominated the scene. Besides the food, Jubilee par- ticipants were treated to an arts and crafts fair. Artisans of many different persuasions set up tables displaying their wares which were on sale for 9 nominal prices. ; Cold weather forced the cancella- tion of a promised attraction—the Dunk-A-Professor booth. : e am we EN ‘we we ae wee 62 Activities 63 ivities Act 64 Activities Jubilee Finali Warming things up, in addition to espicy red beans, were rock groups. %ck music boomed out from a o:able bandstand during the after- 16n’s activities. This was just a em-up session, however, as the day ‘ged with four bands playing to a are crowd in Cefalu Coliseum. The “battle of the bands” had toes tapping until late in the night. Heading the day’s extensive planning and much of the work involved was Beth Winter, Student Activities Board President and a prime mover of such activities. A small army of volunteers, coordinated through as Ana ME sy ; ea S| the Office of Student Development, assured a smooth, orderly, day’s worth of entertainment. The Straw- berry Jubilee once again gave indica- tions of becoming a permanent, tra- ditional fixture at Southeastern. Activities 65 Fierce rodeo action returned to the campus during the Spring Semester when the annual SLU Rodeo Club sponsored event got underway in Cefalu Coliseum. Featured the first night of the rodeo were collegiate competitors. On the second and third nights of the event, professional cowboys and cow- girls of the Tri-State Rodeo Associa- tion competed for cash, trophies and belt buckles. Events included in rodeo compe- tition were bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and team roping for the men, and barrel racing, goat tying and break away calf roping for the women. Debbie Vybiral reigned as queen of the rodeo and was featured in the big rodeo parade which kicked off the three days of rugged competition. 66 Activities The Lion In Winter Southeastern speech and theatre student Rick White directed a special production of ‘‘The Lion In Winter’ during the Spring Semester. “The Lion In Winter” recalled t he days of kings and castles in France during the 12th Century. The production, not a part of the regular Southeastern Theatre season, afforded White an opportunity to demonstrate his directing talents. Members of the cast were: Chuck Morse, Paulette Populis, Mike Smith, Tim McGowan, Kelly Barber, Curtis Holly, Susan Barrett, Lisa Ordoyne, Bob Mathes, and David Hughes. Activities 67 t Leisure Learnin . Leisure Learning is a non-credit program with the concept of extra- curricular or informal education as its primary purpose. Using a_ non- structured approach provides a learning environment based on the assumption that all of life’s experi- ences constitute a person’s education. The Leisure Learning program was instituted at Southeastern Louisiana University in the latter part of October 1974. Some of the pro- grams to date include ‘’Three Dimen- sional Decoupage,” ‘Shirt Painting,” ‘““Rubout Painting,” ‘‘Coke Bottle 68 Activities 1 o me: S gig ey Jae, _— —_— a ae s a RE aor ec fee , _ er . } f. a er —-e- Dolls,’” ‘‘Weapons Safety and Marks- manship,” “Bass Fishing,’ ‘‘Corsage Making,” ‘“Flower Arranging,” “Sand Sculpture,” “‘Camera Operating,”’ and others. The Leisure Learning Class receives its program conceptions from student input on a one-to-one basis, and from faculty and staff members who perceive a need or an interest in that particular area. The program is coordinated by Howard Farrell, Director of Student Development. Activities 69 Miss Gretchen Smith of Mande- ville reigned over the annual Military Ball. The ball, sponsored by the U. S. Army ROTC Corps, is an annual social highlight on campus. Miss Smith was chosen as the Corps’ sweetheart by the RO TC cadets and will represent the corps during the 1976-77 school year. Elected to Company Sponsor positions were Miss Clara Laciura and Miss Monica McCord. Theme of the 1976 Military Ball was ‘‘Minutemen to the Minuteman,” reflecting the dramatic change in mill- tary capability militiamen of 200 years ago to today’s modern officer. The corps entertained many guests, including parents, friends and university officials. Following the usual pageantry which marks the ball, the crowning of the sweetheart and the skits performed by the cadets, those attending enjoyed hours of dancing. 70 Activities RHA Carnival A brand new social event was added to the Southeastern calendar during the Spring Semester when the Residence Hall Association held its first Carnival. The Carnival held at the Pavilion, attracted hundreds of students who enjoyed a variety of games and activi- ties. Among the attractions were: Tucker Hall’s Dunking Booth: the Greased Rope Climb; Livingston Hall’s Jail; performance by the BSU Choir: Southeastern Hall’s Concessions Booth. Each added to the Carnival spirit and atmosphere. The day was filled with much activity which afforded students, faculty and staff an opportunity to join together for fun and fellowship. Activities 71 Miss SLU Miss Lauren Hall of Mandeville, a blue-eyed, redhaired beauty, was selected the new ‘’Miss Southeastern” at the annual SGA sponsored pageant which is traditionally a social highlight of the Spring Semester. First runner-up in the pageant was Miss Donna Pope of McNeill, Miss. Miss Pope captured the ‘Most Talented” title. Other top finishers in the pageant, which attracted 14 con- testants, were: Miss Terri McCrary of Denham Springs, second runner-up; Miss Marlene Hellmers of New Orleans, third runner-up; and Miss Barbara Carrier of Amite, fourth runner-up. Miss Denise Blankenship of Ham- mond, La., was chosen by her co-con- testants as ‘Miss Congeniality.” Pictured at right: “Miss Southeastern” Lauren Hall (center) is flanked by two former ‘’Miss Southeasterns,” 1975 title holder Janice Irwin (left) and 1974 winner Rebecca Causey (right). 72 Activities yn = = - o 4 Southeastern Louisiana University passed a historic landmark with the 1976 Spring Commencement—the 50th anniversary of the school’s first graduation which was held in 1926. Guest speaker for the Spring Commencement was Charles Roemer Il, the state’s commissioner of admin- istration and governor's executive assistant. Winning President’s Medals for Academic Excellence at the Spring ceremony were: Phyllis Puglia, Lyn- ette Mire, Stephanie Fournet, Ruby Gail Wise and Cheryl Bush. Title hopes faded when SLU dropped four straight, later settling for a fourth place finish in the Southeastern posted five victories over division | schools two of those coming in the very early part of the season. A mid season surge in which SLU von six of eight contests was sand- iched between losing streaks of three and four games. But the Lions used a Bestrong finish with three wins in the Bfinal four games including a victory in he season finale to push them over 500 for the fourth straight year. Junior playmaker Leo McClure ust missed setting a new school ecord and led the Lions in two statis- cal departments. The 5'10’’ guard from Baton ouge Central topped SLU in free Ithrow shooting and in assists for the lyear. ; McClure hit .778 from the charity aaline to lead the Lions in that depart- fment for the second straight year and dealt out 124 assists. That figure was two shy of the single season mark of 26 established in 1971-72 by Booker oung in 24 games. McClure’s figure ame in 22 games. Senior Bruce Gilmore led the quad in scoring with 339 points and a 6.1 average. Gilmore’s season total hiked his career mark to 927 points, mgood for seventh on the all-time SLU H list. Two other seniors also led indi- vidual categories for the Lions. For- feward Dan Pieper edged junior Rusty BeWillis in field goal accuracy while get center Mike Rance had a wide margin m as the rebounder leader. Pieper showed a .496 figure for — the season, hitting 67 of 135 shots. Willis, who was also second in scoring with a 10.8 average, was right behind at .489. mark for the campaign to lead the Lions with junior Melvin Smith next with a 5,6 average. Gilmore, Pieper, and Rance were all four-year lettermen for SLU and the first group of seniors to finish their careers at Southeastern with winning seasons in each year. Women’s Program Gains National Recognition Two all-Americans, a 30-2 record and a fifth place finish in the national AIAW small college tournament were among the major accomplishments recorded by the 1975-76 basketball Lady Lions. SLU ended its campaign with a 30-2 record which included four straight wins in the consolation bracket of the national tournament after being upset in the opening round of the meet held in Ashland, Ohio. “We were disappointed we did not finish number one, but are proud of the fact that the Lady Lions had the courage to bounce back and go out a winner,” head coach Linda Puckett said. ‘Participatina in the national tournament was a fantastic experience for our players.”’ The Lady Lions’ 30-2 mark gives them a 52-4 record for two years of competition. Included in that span were two straight state championships and a regional title. Sophomore Pam Cook and fresh- man Queen Brumfield became SLU’s first female all-Americans after being honored at the conclusion of the tournament. Cook and Brumfield, the first women cagers from Louisiana to achieve all-American status, were invited to participate in the regional Olympic trials held in Nashville, Tenn., during April. SLU’s 1975 volleyball squad found the road to success bumpy in the state AIAW tournament held in the fall at LSU in Baton Rouge. The Lady Lions entered competi- tion seeded number four with a 21-14 match play record. Hopes of a championship faded when eliminated in second round action. . Donna Terrebonne brought some glory to the squad’s efforts for the season, being named to the 1975 all- state team. The school’s first women’s tennis team was fielded in the spring. Parker Dr. Clea E. Parker, Southeastern’s president, is now in his ninth year of service to Southeastern. During his tenure as president of the University, Dr. Parker has presided over some of the most dynamic years in the school’s history. Himself a graduate of South- eastern, Dr. Parker has maintained the University’s image as “‘a friendly” place to gain a collegiate education. The president has promoted the ‘open door policy” towards students, faculty and staff. Student involvement in University decision making has been a hallmark of Dr. Parker’s years of service. Since assuming the presidency of Southeastern, Dr. Parker has helped guide the physical growth of the school. Many beautiful, functional buildings have been added to the campus during the past several years, and older facilities have been exten- sively improved. Enrollments have risen to record peaks under Dr. Parker’s leadership, and the faculty and curricula have been vastly improved to meet the new demands of the challenging 1970's. 244 Academics a it AE Bi il a I wT as a ew ae _ Mien: carmatinmamee a AeA MLE Sed Rh a Left: Dr. and Mrs. Parker with their chil- dren, (left to right) Karen, Robin, Steven, and Brian.
