However, today these words fall short; SLC ' s loca- tion is the same but it is fast be- coming unnestled and far from being quiet. Southeastern, and other colleges and universities across the nation are in stages of metamor- phoses — a change of size and char- acter in which the large expand and the small explode. The student tidal wave was and is, the dual product of a nation-wide acceptance of success in terms of material gains as the ultimate aim of education and an alarming in- crease in the birth rate with its roots in the latent phases of World War II and its rapid growth during the post war aftermath of soaring eco- nomics, good iobs, and easy living. The resultant swell in school enroll- ments was no great surprise. The increase had been predicted by pre- dictors, had been capitalized upon by capitalists, had been observed by 1 4 a group of waiting observers, and in a fitting manner of the times, had been prepared for by no one. In the advent of the Susceptible Sixties, the student influx wreaked quick havoc with the unprepared educational systems of the Nation . . . Our quiet little college shared in the crises. In 1959, there were 1734 stu- dents at Southeastern; the 1963 fall semester admissions doubled this figure with a record 3600 students enrolled. The quiet little college be- came an educational pressure pot with a remarkably stable exterior and a slowly smouldering germ of discontent within. hfowever, numbers alone do not tell the full story of SLC today. To real- ize the depth of the change, one must study the individual student. Today ' s student is not yesterday ' s collegian; he, too, is in a transitory phase. Bombarded by appeals to make good so that he will achieve mone- tary success in later life; today ' s student is cautioned to study hard and, conversely is u rged to live a full and active social life. He is dis- covering that achieving the desired status of a well-rounded student often demands more concentration and effort than he possesses. South- eastern students of the sixties live in over-crowded dormitories or off- campus apartments, they develop ul- cers in the cafeteria talking over the race issue, foreign problems, and domestic policies. Some close out the world and live for the moment, losing themselves in parties while others shrink from proms and school dances, discarding them as trivial immaturities. All live in the shadow of fifty megaton bombs, and some crack under the strain and join the ranks of those in Mandeville and Jackson. Formerly, students got the blues ; today, they suffer from manic de- pression with overtones of failure complexes, ego-drives, and other disorders inherent in the sick seman- tics of the age. Students have constructed class societies on campus of which SLC has its share. There are the con- formers, the workers, student gov- ernment members, and more do- gooders ; there are the disinterest- ed, some of whom party their way through (or out of) school, and some of whom merely attend classes and submerge themselves in their protect- ive dormitory shells at night; and there are the flashers who are seen and heard everywhere and who do nothing. Finally, there are the rebels, a frus- trated flexible group whose mem- bers are only consistent in their in- consistency. They have one rule, one byword — discontent. With what they are discontent varies with the in- dividual and runs the gamut from desires to change the world, the state, the college, to merely changing themselves. These students dispute the college ' s essentials and consti- tute its effect, making it fluid in character. ■:r i , r. S : - iri i mJ4?rT. C aunit ' j 1 1 M r ' Ht .. ;i ' .. To run or to participate: that is the fresh- man ' s query. This is the upperclassmen ' s traditional manner of welcoming and becoming acquainted with the freshmen. This year ' s welcome was a little too full of fun and enthusiasm and ended with a motion from Student Government recommending to the Administra- tion that the use of lipstick and other writing ma- terials on freshmen be prohibited. E ' Ik. REGISTRATION Lines form and the wearying procedure begins — cards, catalogs, registration booklet, advisory sheet, trial schedule — station I, station 2, and finally the book- store is in sight; lines form again. KANGAROO KOURT His Royal Highness and distinguished court take their places in the palace, and the fun and frolic treat marks the end of the Freshmean Activities program begins. Knowing upperclassmen come early to get good seats; some of the freshmen crowded into the audi- torium and found seats while others lingered on the steps outside to await the final decree for the 1963-64 Freshman Class. FOOTBALL The 1963 football season was a rebuilding campaign. Many players had gone, and new ones filled the helmeted ranks. Coach Galloway, in order to meet the weekly threats, shuffled his players as a Las Vegas dealer might shuffle his cards. The schedule, though demanding, allowed time for a periodic regrouping of forces and changing of tactics. The ground strategy was successful. The team responded throughout the season to its percentage-playing leadership. Even during the final moments of the games in which the Lions were losing by just a slight margin, the gridiron warriors displayed decorum and discipline by following at-the-moment hard-to-understand orders from the bench. By keeping the grand strategy In mind, the young lions performed well under fire. Next year, SLC will field battle experi- enced veterans, and a title-hungry team. (CLASS PICTURE TAKING) A time to put your best foot forward. 25 MISS SOUTHEASTERN At the Inter-Fraternity Council-sponsored ball in the Fall, Miss Lucy Anders was crowned Miss SLC by Dr. Dyson, after months of secrecy concerning the winner of this highly coveted honor decided by the student body. Outgoing Miss SLC, Miss Verne Fitzgerald, presented her radiant successor with a rose bouquet. An evening of dancing completed this memorable occasion for the court and spectators. 27 HONORS CONVOCATION Faculty and proud parents turned out to honor Southeastern ' s academically-outstand- ing students at the annual hHonors Convoca- tion. The keynote address was given by the Hon. F. B. Ellis, U. S. District judge. Re- freshments followed at the Student Union. LYCEUM SERIES The Lyceum Series began its 1963-64 season with Earle Spicer and the United States Air Force Band in two performances of A Symp hony in the Sky. The Spring Semester got under way with a visit from hHoward K. Smith, news analyst, who spoke on The Changing Challenge to America. In addition to these programs, the Lyceum Series also presented Won Kyng Cho, Korean dancer, and British scientist, Sir Bernard Lovel. The thinking majority of the students greatly appreciates these efforts of the Lyceum Committee to afford them the opportunity of enjoying the entertainment and Intellectual questioning provided by such programs. FRANK SHEED SERGE LENTZ NEWMAN FORUM The Newman Club Forum presented its annual series of stimulating lectures at St. Albert ' s Catholic Student Center during the school year. Open to the public, the programs attempt to revive stu- dents by good speakers and timely topics. In October Serge Letnz, noted reporter, spoke on his travels in Red China. In Feb- ruary the Forum presented Frank Sheed, New York publisher and outstanding Catholic lay theologian. April ' s offering was a debate between conservative and liberal views led by Fulton Lewis III and James Burkhart. FULTON LEWIS I JAMES BURKHART ■I K PJ PjT l SKji Wm HMBW ' ' x w SS f CAR BASH Circle K came through with another bang-up idea to raise money just before Homecoming this year. Some of our more school-spirited counterparts took advantage of the occasion to inspire he rest of us with a little wholesome hatred of the Bulldogs. The success of the project couldn ' t be measured finan- cially, but it did raise a lot of enthusiasm. 35 HOMECOMING Warm rooms and sleep were left far behind as organization members ventured out into a cold and very wet Home- coming-spirited morning to decorate cars and floats for the Homecoming Parade. Pre-game activities that followed the AOII-sponsored parade included the traditional awards to the most original floats and cars, welcome to alums, and the announcement of the name of our Lion mascot. Following the game, both alumni and students enjoyed open houses held by various groups. The homecoming festivities were culminated by the traditional dance at which KDT presented Queen Missy Noonan and her court who were chosen from sweethearts of campus organizations. u 11 ' 4; - ! Spectators were thrilled and the campus chest fund filled as players, coaches, cheerleaders, court members, and Golden Girls contributed to a very success- ful game. BATTLE OF THE BANDS A Student Government first on SLC ' s campus was .the Battle of the Bands. After the battle among five bands, audience applause was judged and cash awards were given to first, second, and third place winners. 60 CIRCLE K SANTA CLAUS One of Circle K ' s finest projects this year was bringing Santa Claus to the children of our married students on campus. This per- formance was refreshing to a few and a new ex- perience to most. 67 BASKETBALL Southeastern ' s basketballers suffered a disappointing season. Coach Marlar ' s Lions compiled a 3-17 to tie the SLC record for the nnost losses, and the Green and Gold cagers finished last in the Gulf States Conference. W- ' LIBRARY The library has become a very popular study resort this year what with crowded dorm rooms, air conditioning, and co-educational opportunities. Study vascilates in a marked trend as well. Monday and Tuesday nights you practically can ' t get a seat in the place (guilt complexes from the ignored week-end resolutions). By Thursday its back to Its calm decorum, and on Friday, you ' d think it had been quar- antined. Anyway, who can study with the stadium loud- speaker blaring the scores? r m ;k 2 imF: By May, however, the Monday-Tuesday crowd dominates the whole week. It won ' t do much good now, but it seems the popular thing to do anyway. Well, at least you ' re right In there with the average on your English grade. Now convince your old man. Frustrated students and exhausted faculty left for a short rest before the actual work, leaving a wake of empty coffee containers and crumpled trial schedules. ) • ■ IT ' - - ' r ALENTINi OANGE Jd was the EMPLOYMENT CONFERENCE Pat Ponder, chairman of the Ennployment Conference Committee, arranged this opportunity for juniors and seniors to acquaint themselves with business firms and the opportunities they offer. This chance for informa- tion about various careers and companies helped those interested students to prepare their futures. 82 m BViTKy Zju jjj 1 RELIGIOUS EMPHASIS WEEK In lieu of the traditional speaker, three outstanding films were presented by the Student Religious Coun- cil. Through the Lyceum Committee, David And Lisa, Tea and Sympathy, and La Strada were screened for students and faculty in an effort to depict problems a college student faces today. Dis- cussions following the movies added exchange of views and communication of ideas as an added en- joyment to this rewarding experience. 84 85 FOUR SAINTS Big Name Entertainment — that ' s what students asked for and got when Student Government brought the Four Saints, an extremely versatile group from the state of Washington, to Southeastern for an outstanding and hilarious performance. SENATE This was an exciting and often trying year for Student Senators — Burn the yearbook, We want the Fanta- sticks, It ' s not right to put that in a college news- paper. — as Senate meetings became long hours of criticisms and defenses. In spite of the unrest with the student body, this year was a highly successful one for President McKnight — more AT T stock, a fountain project, and many differences settled. 90 ' ■ 1 k ' _ 2B BELL. BOOK, AND CANDLE Bell, Book, and Candle appeared before enthusiastic audiences as the spring production of the English depart- ment. Tara Brister and Joy hHouck rendered skillful per- formances as a modern witch and her prey. Within their unusually brief time for rehearsal, the cast gave mirth and reality to this play under the able direction of Dr. Bu- chanan. Unusual lighting effects heightened the aura of the supernatural, and the paintings of E. O. Williams added mood and color to the set. BASEBALL Coach Pat Kennelly ended his long tenure as head mentor of SLC ' s baseball forces this season and the Lions finished third in the conference standings with a 19-14 record, just a half a game behind second place. The evening of dancing and fun reached its peak as Judy Worley passed her crown to her thrilled and excited suc- cessor. 112 113 114 GLEANERS HORSE SHOW For two fun-filled days In April, the Gleaners Club of SLC presented a taste of wild west entertainment. The coliseum was the scene for such bygone ecstasy as greased pig chases, calf roping, and bull riding. Patty Puis, club sweet- heart, greeted the spectators, and club members performed breathtaking precision riding skills. ART SHOW Advanced art students at SLC displayed their sculpture and paint- ings at St. Albert ' s Catholic Student Center In April. Students and Hammond residents alike viewed the variety of works enthusi- astically. This exhibition demonstrated the artists ' talent and was the culmination of the training students received In art. The sculp- tures ranged from non-obiective to nudes, the canvases from a goat to a Cardinal — an exhibition of campus culture. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS At last the campaign was over. Election day and Its snowballs, strawberries, punch, and cookies were over, but the big campaign lay ahead of Presidential candidates Charles Bogan and Danny Gleason, Vice Presidential candidates Joe Berey and Nash Roberts, and Co-ed Veep cand idates HHelen Alexander and Lorraine Wel- born. Campaign tensions tightened during these last few days; then Bogan, Roberts, and Welborn were all smiles as the results of the run-off were tabulated. Conferences were held with individual pledges as well as with the president and deans of the college. Candidates were initiated individually at secret ceremonies, and the initiation rites were completed with a formal installation banquet. 123 AOII MUSICAL AOH ' s had their own Mad, Mad Girls ' Whirl in the writing, producing, and directing of their annual musical. This year ' s production was short but comical sketch of the trials and tribulations of life at a girls ' college. MISS SOUTHEASTERN PAGEANT One comic-tragedy after another marked the Miss Southeastern Pageant. Sheer fortitude saved the show from disappearing skirts, shaky spotlights, and a stubborn tape recorder. The fashion show was more or less normal, and the omission of the question-answer period was greeted gratefully by the contestants. 126 MODERN DANCE SPRING PRESENTATION Under the direction of Mrs. Katie Freidrichs the Modern Dance Club offered its spring presentation in which 2 I students partici- pated. Featured dancers were Carol Ann Gibson and Charlotte Drake. 130 AWARDS CONVOCATION The year ended for outgoing Student Government officials and began for the new administration as plaques were awarded and oaths administered. Classes were not dismissed, and the recipients of scholarships and awards for the year scarcely began to fill the auditorium. GRADUATION Beaming parents and jubilant graduates witnessed traditional com- mencement exercises in the coliseum, which was specially air-condi- tioned for the occasion. This day was the zenith of four years ' expectations, the apex of scholastic achievement for many stu- dents. For others, only a stepping stone to higher degrees. Clayton Rand, distinguished columnist, addressed the audience. Neither 132 the heat of the day nor the size of the crowd kept this momentous ceremony from deeply impressing the graduates with their new status in life and their role in the future, and reminding proud relatives of the importance of education for the welfare and ad- vancement of our nation. 133 1 ' 1 4 ; w; . -, . « THE COLLEGE 135 PRESIDENT Dr. Luther H. Dyson, president of Southeastern Louisiana College is beginning his 19th year as an administrator at the Hannmond institution. The president came to Southeastern in 1945 as dean of the college and served in that capacity until December, 1951. Then, upon the death of President Gladney J. Tinsley, Dr. Dyson became acting president, hie returned to his deanship in 1952 when Dr. Clark Barrow was Southeastern head, hie assumed his present position in 1953. The Southeastern president received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University and began his teaching career in Tangipahoa parish schools in 1930. REEVES 171 IN MEMORIAM Southeasterners of the 1963-64 term will recall with a touch of sadness the death in April, 1964, of hlollis Roomie Wilson, professor of biological sciences. Roomie, as he was called as much in respect as In friendship, served this college well as a student, educator, and alumnus, and the institution always was foremost in his thoughts and actions. Roomie, a graduate of the Class of 1939, gained many honors on the Green and Gold gridiron and was named to the Athletic hiall of Fame, hie is the only player in Southeastern football history to start 39 consecutive games for the Lions. hHis love of sport carried far beyond the classroom, and Roomie became a top-ranking football and basketball official not only in Louisiana but also in the South and in the nation. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the Southeastern Athletic Council. Roomie served in the U. S. Navy in World War II, returning to the campus after his discharge. In the years that followed he rose from a biology laboratory assistant to professor and became an authority on mosses and lichens in his climb up the academic ladder. As an alumnus, Roomie worked for the betterment of the college and in 1952-53 served as president of the Southeastern Louisiana College Alumni Association. During his tenure the constitution of this association was revised or rewritten and many of the provisions set down have been followed through the years. hlollis Roomie Wilson by his thoughts and actions reflected all that Is best at Southeastern.
