Together with these, however, is the importance of a thorough study of the culture and problems of the foreign people who speak that language. The knowledge of foreign tongues and foreign civilizations can do much toward a mutual understanding among nations and toward the solution of world problems. 15 X if 'Ev' I6 ALRRAID DRILL Hi' 4 I N 1 nn2s..:Las-L .- Q Social Studie In this department we learn the bas1c concepts upon whlch our country is founded, 1dea.1s of the dlgfllty brotherhood and equalxty of all men We learn our pr1v11eges and respons1b111t1es as cm zens Most 1mportant of all, we learn how to malntam our demo cracy through mtelhgent votmg ZX Uhr ,I -A. Mathematics Mathematics is one of the oldest sciences. It had its begin- ning in a system of simple numbers devised by primitive mang its ending is in infinity. The application of mathematics is varied and endless. The musician and the poet use it to establish rhy- thm. The element of perspective so important to the artist is geometric. Mathematics is characterized by the vigor and vitality of its growth. Only today are we employing its principles to pene- trate the frontiers of science. We emphasize how art is related to everyday living and the part it plays in communication of ideas. The classroom is used as a laboratory not only in understanding the aesthetics of art, but also as an area where students learn to work as groups. This type of social interchange is a valuable ad- junct to democratic living: fr' 30 ME f- 'EE 1 5 55' GM. '1,e.v7'f 'li' ' as X .ff J no ,F X, uw N Us RH Q, - SIXTH HOUR VI hr. lst: D. Shalibo, R. Show C se The Southeastern Showcase was one of the most popular and effec- tive events of the school year. Over 1500 visitors came to see the many displays, prepared expecially for them. Parents met their children's teachers, saw typical classes in operation, and learned how the school yearbook and paper are put together. After looking at the projects on exhibitions, the tired guests went down to the cafe- teria and refreshed themselves with doughnuts and coffee. They left then after complimenting the faculty on a very enlightening evening. Over 500 parents visited Southeastern to discuss with the faculty the progress of their children. From 10:00 in the morning until 9:00 in the evening the interviews continued in the quiet halls of SE. This was a contrast to the usual hustle and bustle which goes on in our halls on regular class days. This day, however, was reserved for parents. They were grateful to have had aday with their childrens' teachers. Undoubtedly the cooperation between parents and faculty will result in a greater understanding of the problems of the school and home. The students will benefit from this exchange and the Southeastern community will reap a bountiful harvest. Parent-Teacher Conference H.. at ty 1 ,ur 52 5Pfi:l'ik NX SESS. ports , 5? CoachDeakin's team this year suffered many setbacks by very close margins. He reviewed the season philosophically, however, because he realized he could do little with inadequate forces. Next year will be different. The yolmg will have been tried under fire and South- eastern will again return to its win- ning ways.
