This 1945 Aryan, as you know by now, is dedicated to South- eastern's very excellent faculty member and friend, Mr. Robert Brown. The many good reasons why Mr. Brown was selected for this honor are of course known to practically every one in this school. No need here to explain. It is a matter' of custom, however, to scatter a bit of gossip about these famous people to whom the Aryan is dedicated, and we can see no reason why Mr. Brown should be an exception. First off, then, Mr. Brown claims Boise, Idaho, as his native town. He couldn't have stayed there too long, though, because he was already in Detroit when he went to high school, Northern being his alma mater. Albion College gave Bob his under-graduate work, he received his Master's degree in science from U. of M. At Michigan he minored in art. and in his spare time painted a beautiful mural which still adorns a wall in the Vulcan Room of the Michigan Union Tower. From college Mr. Brown started right in teaching, and soon found his way to Southeastern. Mr. Brown is married and has a sturdy little son named Douglas, of whom papa is unspeakably proud. We on the Aryan Staff like teachers who act as if they thoroughly like and believe in their work at Southeastern. Some teachers do scads of work more than they actually have to, including the tedious and unpleasant chores, and they do it with enthusiasm. Mr. Brown is one of these teachers. In our opinion, the entire history of Southeastern could produce few teachers as well liked, as competent, or as highly respected as Mr. Bob Brown. May he iiourish long! . . . Mfr. Because our team was defeated by only one or two touchdowns in most of their games, our showing was much better than the scoreboard indi- cated. The returning lettermen were Captain Mike Kaysserian, Al Bennedetti, Val Thurm, Pete Gifton, Jim Tisler and John Cammett. Highlights of the season were Adam's runn- ing, Martin's passing, Kaysserian's blocking and Tisler's tackling. The cream of the crop in a city of nearly 2,000,000. That's the story of Southeastern's City Championship basketball team. And say, was this old school ever proud! Naturally, the climax of the season was just perfect, what with beating Mackenzie at Olympia While over 15,000 fans all but had heart- failure. There were many other big things in this basketball season that belong in the record. This championship was won by a green team that had to pick up its experience as it played. Yet this team bested every other high school in the Metropolitan League, and with it Perry Deakin was credited with do- ing the best coaching job of the year. This honor was ofiicial. But the Big game at Olympia was the dream pay-off, SE crashing home ahead of Mackenzie by one point, 29-28. It was something no one who saw it will ever forget: the tremend- ous crowd, four school bands, South- eastern's biggest - and - snappiest - in - the - city Cheerleaders, the Mayor, hot-dogs 'n pop, and the CHAMPIONSHIP! Yup, some fun! 53 Varsity Swimming Scoreboard 62 - 29 Eastern 25 - 66 Denby 79 - 12 N.E. 66 - 25 Eastern 32 - 59 Denby 75 - 16 N.E. The SE Varsity Swim- ming team for 1944 proved that they were contenders for hon- ors. Placing 2nd on the East Side and 6th in the city meets is no little accomplishment. Bob Heriter, Ken Regal and Ralph Blohm, All-City men, combined with co-captains Schultz and Farwell, kept the team in there fighting all of the time. Coach Froehlich's untir- ing eiorts produced thirteen let- ter winners. Because most of these boys are returning next year our hopes for another good record are high. 1 54 The Banner for House Indoor Track stays on the Walls of 203, as the Cammett-men emerged Victorious from one of the most exciting House Track meets in recent years. Bryant Gorton con- tributed heavily to the Argonaut's cause by tak- ing 3 firstsg 30-yard dash, 30-yard l o W hurdles, 220 dash. An- other Argonaut, Tom Fraser, won the 440. House 202 placed first and second in the half mile with Wally Kraft finishing 5 seconds ahead of McPherson. Their re- lay team consisting of Mays, Hampton, Kaiser, and High, captured first place in the relays. Leading a large field of entrants, Bill Wilson took home the mile honors for 222. The Dierkes-coached hill-'n-dalers had an in-and-out season to look back upon. Don Foukes, captain and all-city miler, led his team mates and opponents to the finish line in most of the meets. An array of newcomers, plucky but inexperienced, composed the team. Among these lads were Omer De Schepper, Archie Farquhar, Don Vereecke, Ted Camella, Ken Angel, Andy Smirnes and Earl Tomlinson. Although the season Was none too success- ful, many new prospects were scouted by Coach Dierkes. With all these boys return- ing, S. E. can look to a brighter future on the cinder paths. Ile crve Hou RESERVE n A hard working Reserve squad came through the 1944 football season with three wins, one tie, and one defeat. J, Fred Edwards handled the job of cap- tain like a regular pigskin veteran. Harris, Tanoury and Bayagich displayed real ability in carrying the ball. Other assets to the team were Crawford with his timely conversions, Xanthoulous with his bullet passes, and Cata- lino with his swell defensive plays. The climax of the season came with the challenge to play the mighty Varsity at Mack Park. The boys took up the challenge and for three long quarters humbled the not- so-super supermen. In the closing minutes the superior strength of the Big Boys be- gan to tell, and they come out on top 20 to 0, feeling quite lucky about the whole thing. Although the team was not large, it was packed with all-around efliciency. A vote of thanks is extended to Coach Dierkes for a swell job as 'toflicial referee. Participation in house sports is to be encouraged because it prepares boys for Re- serve and Varsity teams. The All-House Football team was chuck full of talented players, who are to be congratulated on one swell showing. A Basketball The girl cagers ended their season with a total of two victories and two losses. Eastern and Cass proved easy to handle and were de- feated by scores of 25-16 and 17-7 re- spectively. Denby again proved to be a fateful opponent and the game ended 26-17 in Denby's favor. North- eastern also showed their superior passing and blocking and the score- board read 21-17. Hockey Even under the able co-captainship of Alice Kretschmez and Lois Newborn, the girls' field hockey team was unable tc score a winning point against the strong opposition put up bg Denby, Liggett, Hamtramck, and Northeastern. But what did it mean to the dozen or so of your class-mates pictured here to make this possible? . . . Well, let's see. They were appointed to the Staff last Sep- tember. Immediately there followed a series of trips to Photoengraver's studios to learn all about the planning and styling of modern year-books, and to see just how copper and zinc engravings are made. Then came trips to printers and to binders, followed by conferences with book-cover merch- ants. After these preliminaries came the meet- ings actually to plan the 1945 Aryan. Then the real job started. Hundreds of pictures had to be planned and taken, pages laid out, copy written. 800 Senior Histories had to be collected, edited, typed and proofed, then sent to the printer's and proofed again, along with all other copy. This meant plain dreary work daily, usu- ally till six o'clock and after. Then the streets had to be tramped to sell advertising, retrampeu to get the ad copy, and again tramped to collect for the ads, for most of them. Of course there was also the work on fea- tures, clubs, activities, and sports to be done. All this the Staff contributed. Actually, you are looking at what comes within a cat's whisker of being a miracle. You see, all these people worked on the J ungaleer anywhere from one to four or more semesters, come next Wednesday, and not one has as yet gone beserkg at least not to the Advisor's knowledge. That, friends, is something. The Jungaleer, like the usual high school paper, naturally has just a bunch of kids as reporters, as editors, as business man- agers, and as advertising salesmen. What they write is ogled by twenty-odd English teachers, as well as 60 or 70 others, who jolly well better not find any errors in English, historical data, scientific references, or any whuzzis-'n-howzat. Of course they dog and that means trouble. These student journalists must not fail to give due and just space to every club, activ- ity, interest, department, House, tribe and ter- mite within earshot. Then, in so doing, woe be if' there is a mistake in name-spelling, ages given, honors won, Gregg-stuff achieved, stamps bought, Christmas-baskets filled, or club-initiations described. Then come the so-called niceties. Oh, the finger pointing! You gotta-rub gotta,'f you have to watch your language when writ- ing about lady-teachers, old teachers . . . about teachers. Then there are the universal Board- of-Ed taboosg they're reasonable, and they are generous, but they are talooos, and a steady nervous strain keeping them in mind. Again, for the newspaper, there is the matter of paying your bills. That means . . A selling advertising again. AND collecting, to say nothing of keeping the space-buyers happy. Thus the complete cycle as mentioned occurs every two or three weeks, and it goes on and on, while you, dear casual glancer-at- the J ungaleer, yawn, growl a bit because your name is never mentioned in Party-Line, and forget all about it. Our assistant principal was basketball coach at SE from 1920 to 1926. Yes, this is a reasonable time for the prodigal's return. Interesting picture, eh ? who likes an occasional picnic, lends a hand now and then in the kitchen, goes to a movie once in a while, drives a chevvy, reads the News and Free Press and 'k all available magazines really worth reading, and is still intensely interested in all sports. Like several million others, he just loves a tender steak, his favorite dessert is apple pie with ice cream. He drinks coffee. At the haberdashers he buys conservative ties, quiet sox. He likes tweed and worsted suits, single or double breasted. Away from school, say on a Saturday, Mr. Draper likes to tinker and work around the house, and read. As for July and August, he is summer school principal at Cooley high. Late August finds him at his cottage away up at Torch Lake in I'10l'th61'I1 Michigan.
