And heroes are people you don't have to look for. You know they are around without having to search for them, because they are so busy being helpful. That is how it is with Frank Guyott, our school janitor. And that is why we on the Aryan Staff are glad of our chance to honor Frank QWhere's Frank?j Guyott by dedicat- ing this wartime edition of the Aryan to him. Prank, as our janitor, is well known to all. Frank Guyott, honorable citizen and lifelong resident of Detroit, is relatively unknown. But he shouldn't be. You should know then, that . , . as we have said, he was born in Detroit and lived here all his life. Not only a native Detroiter, he is a charter resident of old Mack Avenue, formerly called Blair street. At present Frank lives on the West side, at 3164 Brooklyn, near Grand River. He is married and has two grown chil- dren, a son Frank Jr., 38, and a married daughter, Eleanor. Prank has been at Southeastern for fourteen years, with the Detroit Board of Education one year longer, a year spent on probation. Evenings, at home, Frank likes just to sit around and read the paper, 'News' and 'Free Press' Movies bore him: sees not over two or three a year. Frank doesn't care for candy bars, and for dessert after his brought-from-home lunch he likes best a juicy California orange. For dinner it's good soups and stews. So there he is, humble of tastes, simple and steady of habit, and solid through and through. Southeastern is lucky to have him. Yes, we think a great man is one who takes his job seriously and does it well. Frank, as he is known to everyone, has done just that. He has been thorough, conscientious, friendly and helpful to everyone, uniformly and steadily. The Old Oaken Bucket stayed at home. Returning lettermen were Ray Collins, Dan Kippen, Joe Bozmoski, Wilbur Briggs, Phil McCabe, Dino Markus, Bill Schleicher, and Jack St. Onge. These star gridders gave confidence and strength te the line and backlield. Did our squad get any breaks? The records report one, Krecke's Wrist, broken in the first quarter of the Northwestern game, Other features of the football year Were Phil McCabe's being selected player of the year for all round usefulness, and the hard hitting plays of Bill Schleicher, Mike Kaysserian, and Dino Markus in the backfield. Aiding the Junglemen was a heavy line made up of such notable poundage as Stanley Champion, Wila bur Briggs, Ray Collins, Bill Bell, and Roy Ethier. Hardest trainer and only returning letterman on the team was Sarkis Deradoorian, who with his teammates Captain Dick Caruso, Dick Gillam, John Brummer, Ernest Baldini, and Dick Rayburn, sent the team to its high spot among the city's track teams. After taking the Iirst meet from Pershing, Northern, and Northeastern by the low score of 20-37 Clowest score Winsb, they ran Cass and Denby into the ground. At the last meet the cindermen trounced Cass and Pershing, the score standing at 31, 33, 62. fl? VARSITY SWIMMING Second place in the Southeast Champion- ship, and five men on the All-City swim team were the results of the natators efforts this year. Returning lettermen Bob Williams, captain of the team, Ed Jansen, Charles Klann, and the addition of Allen Campbell, a newcomer, helped much to strengthen the team and boost the final score sheet to 4 wins and 2 losses. In the first meet Southeastern defeated Northeastern 69 to l l. After falling to East- ern in the second meet they beat out Denby by a mere point. Interest in House Football and all other house sports has greatly increased. This is evidenced by the large number of boys trying out for the various house teams. Such interests are good signs: for they show an increase in school spirit, and prepare the lower-classmen for reserve and varsity teams. M 'W ' v HOUSE TRACK First place in the gruel- ing two-mile run was tak- en by Willard Vereecke of House 222, but his first place was not enough to oHset the attack made by House l0O's team, who walked for ranj off with the title. The Lincolnites com- posing this winning team were: Dick Caruso, John Brummer, Bob Conibear, Archie Farquhar, and Frank Vereecke. Most of this team went directly to the Varsity squad. It was House lO0's lirst track banner, and was taken from 203's runner- up team by a mere 4 point margin. The annual indoor house track meet was taken by house 203. The Argo- nauts edged out the 222 Bulldogs by a mere 2 l-7 point margin. l RESERVE FOOTBALL Champs! is the word to use when speaking of the reserve football team. Brilliant plays and lots of cooperation were the basis of the team's success, and with a start- ing eleven composed of Don Shumaker, Fred Meeh, Anthony Tucci, Harold Knight, Bill Lents, Dick Webb, Bob Howard, and Phil Strek Cpunter extraordinaryj is it any wonder that the final tally showed 8 victories and one defeat Clost to D. U. S., and was not a scheduled gamej. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The large turnout for basketball this year indicates a rising interest in the sport. The first team and substitutes were chosen from a larger number of girls this year than in previous years. The first team was made up of: forwards, Glenda Locke, captain-elect: Jaiana Saylon and Nancy Dillowayg guards, Alice Kretschmer, Pat Kavanaugh, and Rose Pickovich, While Mary Corder, Jeanne Met- ting, and Arla Fair are frequently used for substitutions. Snappy plays and good cooperation helped the team along immensely. Taking the first game from Annunciation, 30-8, they became too confident and tied Northeastern 26-26 in the second. The third game was lost to Denby fthe girls have Denby trouble tool, and was the first time they had done so. At the end of the game the score read 27-23. Even the guidance of Coach Waier: the captaincy of Dora Scott, who played with all the zeal and sportsmanship that a captain should, and the return of Connie Jones, Lor- alie Fritz, Mary Ann McCar- thy, Kay Powell, Anita Sal- masian, Betty Borlase, and speedy Alice Kretschmer, though extremely helpful, could not contend with the strong teams of their oppo- nents. M.-guL eN5zg-gif: EIN ENSIGN S FACULTY AT WAR Mr, Ballmer came to South- eastern in 1935. While here he was the conductor of our band and orchestra. He also gave in- strumental instruction. Now he is a Lieut. Col. in the Army and when last heard from was sta- tioned at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. Miss McCully also got in a good stint of teaching at South- eastern before she left to join the Waves, having arrived here in 1934. At S. E. she taught in the Commercial Department. She is now stationed in Washington, D. C. Mr. Rea started teaching at S. E. in 1930. Later when Southeastern's large enrollment called for another House, Mr. Rea was made Principal of House 100. He is now a lieuten- ant fj. g.D in the Navy. Mr. Nester began his fine ca- reer at Southeastern in 1930. At the time, an acute shortage of auto-shop teachers claimed his services below stairs . In time, however, Mr. Nester was trans- ferred to his proper department, Social Science. During this en- tire period, however, he also contributed his superior abilities to the Health Ed. department, coaching Football, Baseball, and Reserve Basketball. He is now a lieutenant g.j in the U. S. Navy. Miss Maul came to Southeast- ern in 1942, and in 1943 she left to join the Spars. While at S. E. she taught in the Commer- cial Department and was a sponsor of the Girl Reserves. She is stationed in Washington, D. C. Mr. Gornbein began teaching at Southeastern in 1936. He taught in the Social Science De- partment and was well known for his stimulating history classes. Now he is in the Navy and is a Communications Oflicer on convoy duty in the Atlantic. Miss Vanden Bossche came to Southeastern in 1930. For thir- teen years she taught in the Commercial Department. Now with the Marines in North Car- olina, her main job is Executive Oflicer for the Women's Reserve Squadron. Words of parting are always difficult to say, especially after the close association I have had with so many of you throughout the years. You of the faculty have seen Southeastern grow from a small six-year high school to one of the outstanding educational institutions of our city. You and I have lived our school lives together, through sunshine and shadow, and I leave you with happy memories of your loyal friendship and cooperation. Southeastern has attained its high scholastic record here in Detroit because of the achievements and ideals of its alumni. It has been my good fortune to see all our graduating classes pass from our portals, to know their love for Southeastern, and the splendid contributions they are making to the arts, the sciences, and the professions. However widely scattered we may be, dear Alumni, and though many years may have passed since we met, we will always be united in spirit and in our memories of Southeastern.
