JI-1' I', PUBLISHED BY THE SENIORS OFI SOUTHEASTERN HIGH SCHOOL, DETROIT, MICHIGAN EE Individual attention does ii! COACH BOYD scores again! Another award has been added to his growing collection, and with great pride the Aryan staff pays tribute to a great pal and a truly successful coach. Mr. Boyd has proved to be one of the best track coaches in the city, giving Southe eastern possession of many prep track titles. Highlights of Mr. Boyd's record here are: In l94l, our track team, under the direction of Coach Boyd, took every championship possible. This includes: Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor championships, and the Wayne Relays which we have won for three consecu- tive years. Our track teams also won two grand slams Cfirst, second, and third place in every eventl in dual meet competition. Southeastern was the only high school in the country ever to do this. But it is not only because of these honors that we so admire and respect Coach Boyd. lt is because he is so faithful to his job and so truly interested and efficient in everything he does. Leighton Boyd takes not only a teach- er's interest but an over-all interest in his boys, and the invaluable training, physical and otherwise, he gives them will be remembered throughout their lives. No wonder he obtains such results! In deciding the dedication for this Aryan, we truly be- lieve that we have made a selection difficult to challenge. We feel that all will agree with us when We say that this issue of the Aryan would miss the bull's-eye without this dedication to COACH LEIGHTON BOYD. The faculty at Southeastern have earned high distinction for themselves. Several have already enlisted in the armed forces of our country. Others have been transferred to cer- tain places Where they can be of greater value to their country. Even here at school the teachers are doing all they can to aid the War effort. Some have taken first aid courses which they are now teaching us. Special demands were made upon many, that they might be better prepared for the huge task of teaching the physical fitness classes. But their patriotism goes further than just doing extra school Work. They also work on rationing boards and as air raid wardens, they participate as blood donors, and they co-operate in the share-the-ride campaign. Yes, the faculty is doing a fine job, and they de- serve credit for so doing. lt's hats off to you, faculty, We appreciate your help more than you might know. f' - ' 2 ,r ff f rf ' H A , 3 , -.....4.-.---. ---Y , Y . , , Q. HBEE YEARS AGO, our present Seniors en- tered Southeastern High School with one supreme task in view: the task of preparing for their life's vocation. They worked hard at this job and accomplished much in this short span of time. Now they have laid aside all these plans until they finish the new, important job which awaits them. The future teachers, secretaries, doctors, bankers, and others have abandoned their work in favor of the heav- ier demands of war. After this job is finished, they will resume their courses where they left off 7 but until then, they must devote their energies to filling the needs for nurses, soldiers, workers, and also as members of the numerous service organizations. This need is urgent, and the Seniors of Southeastern are doing their part to make this world a better place for all future Seniors. ur v L. fi - F ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' '.,-,'na-:.qnur CLASS UP img 55' Qgfgigl Tiff ? 433 E3L4.j,EiiQjjJn,4j 3 I 5?iE5iIi?fl WE 4, H M' 'WW m'f'W' WTVZWEWWQ '5 '3 5 i55fQ 'HQ' F' uf A if K 5- tv fp 1 0 rain , L1 cw' 5 Lx, 'hp . ., f1tr w'.,f 'vF TF' G!! - ,F 'i', 3U,1fQYv,u , 1 N - vq .-.. .4 ..., ... Margaret Piper OR FUN AND FITNESS, the students of Southeastern have altered their whole sports program. The once popular dance classes have given way to the even more popular physical fitness classes. Fancy dives and elegant swimming strokes have faded into the background as endurance, length swimming, and obstacle swimming have taken the limelight. Each day, students labor strenuously with all forms of exercises designed to build muscles they never knew existed. Sit-ups, rope climbing, chinning, and bending exercises are constantly being introduced as new muscle builders. Rhythmic marches are another source of exercising, which is stressed almost daily. The students of Southeastern realize that a mighty job looms before them, and that they must be physically able to do their part. They have worked diligently at this problem and are obtaining remarkable results. Their job is one really worth commending. -I f-f ' V ffl' 'S ,f fff 1' Q , .Q k iff - ' . r . The otltls were against us. however. antl the seore at the linish found us with a total ol one win, one tie. and lour losses. The fact that games were lost by not more than one loufliclown. and in the ease of ties only by yardage. proyes that although not a winning teani, Southeast- ern had a team of superb strength and staniina. Injuries to four of our regular varsity inen, XViekershain, Dupart, Coe, antl Sehleiker, proyetl to be a cleterniin- ing faetor in our losses. The Oltl Uaken liueket, long heltl by Southeastern. was kept, in our possession by winning froin Eastern on a water soaketl lieltl. Nlention shoulcl be made of Ray- inontl Heabert, then a freshie. who niatle Varsity in his first season, and to Cliff Livingston who played a full quarter with a broken ankle during the North- ern game. Dan Kippen was in and out during the season with a triek knee, and Bill XVickershani played over a lull quar- ter with a broken hand. These fellows showed real Courage: they symbolized perfectly the spirit of the whole team. The lineup for our first game included a stluatl of thirty-fotn' husky hlungaleers, but before the season elosetl this had tlwinclletl to twenty-hye. These twenty- liye neyer inissetl a praetiee in all of the nine weeks of football. Congratulations to a great team and a swell bunfh of fellows and may their next season proye to be a Credit to their Courage and ability. 157, if 1 BIHLS'5 PUHT5 XVi1l1 1l11' 1'lz1sl1 ol' sliclas 1 1l11'i1'1':11's ' still 1'i111 lllL' l1'1 4 s1111:11l 1'l1:1lk1' 1l 111l 1111l1 1 11111111 1111111 1l1l1' sl1 llk 11I 111 ll 1 1l'1 ' 1' 'z il 1 'ff' ' i ':11's' V' '. 1' 1 'ills ' .1111 1111'11's :1111l 11111 llN 'z1s1111 l1 Qlll 1111l1 lllhl s1111:11l 11I lJ11lll 1111111111111s .lllll 111'1'1'i1111s 1 111 11l1111s Xlissllill I111111111 1 1111111 1l1 3111 1111 l111 111l1 111 11111l1111g 11 1l11111111 Xl1 X V49 1. Instead of their usual plan of swimming meets with a selected varsity team, the girls all had an opportunity to use the pool. The varsity team just helped their houses and swam for fun. Any girl who could swim a length. either with speed or slowly, had a chance to compete for her house. This competition found 303 leading all other houses with a sum total of 1951 points as compared with 223's 1013 points. Third and fourth places were taken by 323 allll 100 with 907 and 729 points. The varsity squad participated in the team marathon and again 303 pulled ahead with 673 points, second place 323 had -134 points and 223 had 36-1 points. House 100 fell below with 116 points. The first House Meet was taken by 303 with 71 A points. Second, third, and last places went to 100, 323, 3 W3 r't , and 223 respectively. Their points were 23, 21, and 5. The second house meet was again taken by 303 with 35 points: 323 took second place with 25 points and 223 settled for third position with 7 points. 100 limped in with 5 points. Captain Roxie Tayler of the swimming team led 111 others in underwater swiIIIs and lengths. This record ndicates that these girls are now physically ht for any 'easonable duties they might be called upon to face, in Lhe line of swimming, at least. - . . H ll HE Intramural lootball Banner returned to Its resting place on the Twen- tieth Century Argonaut wall after an absence of three years! F U U 'I' B L L Although the last game played resulted in a deadlock with 202, the mighty krgonauts won by season average. Captain John Ban was an outstanding player, reing not only a good back but also a steady center. It was partly through his vork and that of Burt Dickerson that the banner was brought to 203. Burt played , whole game while he was severely injured. He had been knocked unconscious n the hrst quarter and played the remainder of the game while only partly con- cious. He revived i1I the locker room after the game. N ' The season began with House 203 defeating 222. 12-0. The game was a hard T ought struggle all the way. In their next game, the Argonauts trounced House 202, 18-0. This game was a one sided alTair when Adams, Dooley, and Dickerson ound no opposition and scored in all the periods except the third. The climax of the season was the choice of an All-House Team. These out- tanding players were Charles Bernhardt, 203, the league's hnest end oII both ii efense and ollense: Manfred Kaulfuss, 202, guard: -Iohn Ban, center, Harold flhom. 222. guard, Omphrey Tocco, 222, tackle: .Ierry DeBruyne, 203, end: Burt iickerson, 203, back: Sam Adams, 203, gained more ground by plunging than back: Herb Lorenz, 202, back, Paul Maroski, 202, back. ny other I' SPUBTS IBHISBABE 11H1SBABE l2H1SBABE 62 -- IUTH GRADE Back Bow -l, Benoit, W. Klann BUYS' SWIMMING VERYTHING SOUTHEASTERN is doing today has a close connection with the War. New clubs, classes, and special committees are be- ing organized with the intention that more time might be devoted to war activities. Every Senior has strug- gled through a Red Cross Class, learning to cope with everything from a minor case of hiccoughs to the more serious cases of red, White, or blue unconsciousness. We now have a Victory Corps, which has spon- sored various drives to collect needed materials for the War effort. The jalopy contest, Waste fats, scrap, and War Bond drives are but a few examples of its splendid work. The Iunior Red Cross Committee has also been doing its part. Its Work has included such activities as the phonograph record drive and the victory book campaign. The Girl Reserves have made USO scrap- books and Red Cross bandages. To top all this We had the Furlough Frolic which was a home-coming for all our boys in the Service. One can readily see that Southeastern is directing all its activities toward the War, and its job is no longer considered to be of trivial importance. gg Y I f- ' A F s-2:..gg,- ..--.- -.-.-,., .A , V R ' - 'rd-fx'! vw- FRONT ROW-Tom Guinness. lim Leithauser, Dick Gabriel. This proved correctg for, on the evening of December 18th, the auditorium was filled to capacity with people who had come to enjoy the annual Christmas Concert. Their expectations were certainly fulfilled. With the strains of the Lord's Prayer flowing down from the balcony, a hush swept over the audience, and this restful quietude lasted throughout the remainder of the program. There can be little doubt that every person who attended the Christmas Concert would have liked personally to thank Mrs. Ridley, Mrs. Hoover, Mrs. Douglas, and Mr. Emmer for their delightful presentation.
