The Aryan Staff believes that one member of our faculty who has consistently extended the sphere of his usefulness far beyond the requisites of excellent teaching is William H. Edwards-Herb to his col- leagues in the Math department, and to his friends. Herb Edwards has done this with faithful steadiness, showing in the meantime a fine unconcern about rec- ognition. The story of the kind of job Mr. Edwards has been doing in his classroom extends far beyond the confines of his pupils. His efficient, cheerfully given assistance in all Southeastern's Auditorium activities has been invaluable. There are other things about Herb Edwardsg he is a scholarly fellow with an unusually rich acquaint- ance with fine literature. It is the accumulation of such qualities of personality and accomplishment then that we of th A e ryan Staff feel more than jus- tifies us in dedicating this 1 d' ' 939 e 1t1on to South- eastern's great good fri d en , William H. fHerbj Edwards. May his tribe increase. FUHEUJURD OR three years we have had conffzzsed feelings about the glorified day o commencement, and now it is rapidly becoming history. Each is entangled in his labyrinth of ideas of what to do. Some of us are destined to join the hles of pioneers who are perpetually seeking new and better things. There is but little difference between us and our forefathers in that we are both trying to unearth some as yet undiscov- ered principle. The pioneer of yesterday set ont to hnd the unknown and suc- ceededg so .shall we. They set up the traditions of todayg we shall erect the tra- ditions of tomorrow. Let ns determine as we delve through the pages of this book of memories that we shall continue to progress, not to stagnate. W jhe Cpfllifurs. A nd thru future years mid our hopes and fears We will smile the while and chase the tears, To be one for all and be all for one Smiling in defeat and victories won, Memories of this, of the pals we'll miss, In the class of january thirty-nine. And our school so true, A lma Alater, dear That has held our hearts and courage too And the royal hue of the colors white And the purple that we love the sight To the Faculty we give all our thanks For the work we did, the jokes and pranks Wltieri we leave we'll find just how good and kind Are the friends of our dear school, SO UTHEASTERN HIGH. Drama comes of age at Southeastern. That is exactly what it did with the presentation of james Reach's Donft Ever Grow Up. By this I don't mean to inkle that play-production under Miss Littell had far to go to reach maturity. The quality of Senior plays at Southeastern has been enviable for years. This was something special, however. There is so much of Don't Ever Grow Up that persists in returning to mind: first and steadiest, that delightful brat-sister of Elaine Meadows, Mimi. How real she was! And if real life is like that, who would want to grow up? I think that I shall never forget what seems the happiest piece of casting imaginable, Bob Moffat as Hal Kenneyg blunt, gullible, unadorned football hero, bulging with what made people laugh. I remember the mysterious Glenng vocation, tutor for Cravath Meadowsg avocation, plague to Elaineg solution: husband to Elaine. Then there was the kidnaping stage-businessg poor Halg to think little Mimi would do that to him! Yes, and there is much more that might be said, granted the space. But a glance again at the cast will serve well to bring all these things to mind. Try it New Fires, senior play of the June Class, had what this whole country needs-laughs and relaxation. Charles Burdette, the playwright, bent over backwards to avoid a possible overdose of gloom, or sadness, or any deep, tragic moods. For the second successive play, Miss Littell, director, showed some unusually smooth casting, and the total results of Miss Littell's J H efforts proved strongly gratifying. l Bruce Wfinkworth and Shirley Y'Vales did the heavy stuff, and did a nifty job. Mary Alice Nipper's work, good work it was, also edged toward a more serious vein. But Don Neitzel and Beverly Armstrong, as brats, warmed things up aplenty. i HHH HRIS XfVhat tickled the audience no end was the close-up of the newly- Weds, James Peters and joan Chard, while the calmer yet very en- joyable work of James Vfilson, the young medic, made an excellent balance, completing nicely the cycle of parents, newlyweds, lovers, and young 'uns. XfVe mention one of the best parts last, the contribution of Tom Thomson, as hired man, the housekeeper, Pat Harris, Tom's pal in a Hendish kind of a way, the chip, John Wlilsong Betty Jean Laufer, rnaidg the indispensable friend, Eleanor Cordes, and her mother, Gloria Bateman. W' e are glad, too, that we were in on the kill g else we should have missed Sid's wife, Norma Pierpont. Vie hope you saw her hat. From then came the steady pull of rattling good humor. The play, we vote, was right. BRUCE WINKWORTH june Lead S9 60 William A. DRAWN sv BIORAN SHU:x1AnD-ARYAN ART STAFF ' GEUHGE HHCHHIHH During the school year 1938-39, two tslightl honors escaped George Hackman: we don't remember what they were. He nailed all the rest. A partial list includes: Captain, City Championship basketball team: member ol All-City team: honorable mention All-City football team: track star: Class President: winner of Popularity Contest: nine-letter man and Honor-roll student. George was also Maybee President. Certain aspects oi being Class Presi- dent did not become George as well as did his athletic laurels: he is too reticent a fellow to enioy the spot- light of The Chair. though he made an able President. If more people attended the track meets they would see how George leaves runners behind in the Sprints. In basketball? We doubt whether Perry Deakin ever coached a better player. l64l Much of this iellow's effectiveness i football lay in his remarkable. ui suspected speed. His effortless strid is most deceiving. EUGENE HIRSCH f Shot-put He put the shotg he pushed and grunted and put that 12-pound ball farther than any Southeasterner ever did before, or farther than any other high-school athlete in Detroit-to win the City Championship for 1939. DONELDA MAC LEAN if Basketball Captain and outstanding player on girl's varsity basket- ball team-the gang just c0uldn't do without Donelda from their first glimpse of her as a 10-BQ three full years on the team, no less. SPUHIS HUllllllS HARVEY PIERCE f Baseball Our spies tell us Harvey played a bit of basketball-have you heard? YVell, just to polish things off, Harvey finished up on All-City, and as Captain of the All-State teams. P.S. Add three years varsity baseball. MARGE RATHBUN -Af Swimmer Like Donelda fsee abovej , there was no minor league stuff for Margeg she too saw three great years of varsity swimming, taking first in every event she entered but two, when she finished second. Good enough? RAY COLBY -A' Swimmer This gets better and better: Hirsch was All-City, and Pierce was All-State, but Ray was named All-American High School back-stroker. Ray was on our City Cham- pionship team last year, never losing a race all season. HJUTBHLL l66l First Row-Harsen, Holmes, Rizzo, Filgo, Barnett, Oulettc Carroll, Thomson, Smith, Flynn Schultz. That boys and gals, in a nutsl1ell, is just what happened the night of the city finals. VVith twenty seconds or so to go Emil Hison broke loose a11d shot tl1e winning basket. Previous to his basket Northeastern hooped one from tl1e free tl1row line to break tl1e tie which set the two teams into the second overtime period. Besides Hiso11, Lund and Pierce accounted for twenty-three of tl1e thirty-three points made, Lllllfl making 13 while Pierce made io. .p Hackman and Pierce were A'hot the night of the semi-finals. They made 16 and 15 points respectively out of the 42 all told. During the regular season, Southeastern lost 1, tied 2, and won 6, which left a three way tie with Hamtramck and Northeastern for the East Side title. Witli Northeastern and Hamtramck hghting it out at twenty paces Southeastern had trip position. Looking through old records we see that the game with Pershing was easy, and that with Eastern, which happened to be on the same night as the Senior Play, was tough, in fact, so tough tl1at we could only tie. Commerce could be ranked with Pershing. In tl1e Miller game, Gleffe and A'That boy Pierce again were on. They scored over half the points made. Next the men from the cold country-that is Northern-were defeated by Pierce and Hackman, who made more points than the entire Northern team. Then came Northeastern and with them defeat, for Southeastern's machine was not working at all that night. Pierce, who seemed off, made 10 points out of the total 19. The next two were not easy b11t by no means were they hard. Denby and Hamtramck, who inci- dentally was last year's champ, bowed to their superiors. Highland Park, wl10 went through the season without winning any games, tied the jungaleers at 32 all. We are lucky that it wasn't a defeat. fC017ffi7l1.L6Cl on Page 109, GIRLS' HOCKEY HIS year tl1e girls' Held hockey team, coached by Mrs. Blanche Shafarman, was tl1e best Southeastern has ever had in intersehool competition. The girls played live games and finished the season undefeated, beating Commerce 1-0, Mackenzie 2-1, Denby 2-1, Miller 2-1, and Pershing 3-1. This is dehnitely better than their record of last year when they won two, tied one, and lost two. Jean Harrell, Southeastern's representative on the All-City team, earned rousing cheers, as did Gerry Fiorello, joan Blair, and Norene Denny. Captain Jeanne Chapotan should be credited lor her good work throughout tl1e season. Both Bud Rosteck and George Hackman carried the old pig skin to touchdown lane. After Rosteck's touchdown Hackman boosted tl1e score one poi11t by place kicking the ball through tl1e uprightg however, o11 his second attempt the ball went wide of the posts. A moment ago I said the unlucky score but our team was not affected by the thirteen lor they norwestered Northeastern 7 to o, tl1e only game Northeastern lost all season. But then the thirteen took its toll for Pershing held the -Iungaleers to but 6 points while managing to squeeze out 7. It was during this game that Bill Gentry, who in the coach's and everybody else's opinion would have had a berth 011 the All City Team, received injuries which kept him out of the game for tl1e rest of the season. This accident boded nobody any good. Pete Fornari took the ball, in the closing seconds of play, from Pershing's 25 yard line down to their one foot line. A time out penalty moved the ball back 5 yards and on the next play the game was history. Rosteck was the only Southk easterner to hit pay dirt. Maddened by this defeat, tl1e gridironers sank Denby's Tars with two touchdowns to their none. Did you ever go bicycling and run smack into a tree? Wfell, that's just what happened when we met the Cosmos from Hamtramck at Keyworth Stadiun1. But as a bicycle bounces off a tree, we bounced off Hamtramck and came out on top of High- land Park 13 to o, and Northern 13 to 7. Pete Fornari and Les Gates were placed on the All City Teamg but mention should be made of George Hackman who in the opinion of every body who followed foot- ball, should have been placed on one of the teams. During tl1e season he carried the ball for 451 yards gained from line of scrim- mageg he also handled two thirds of all the passing and all of tl1e punting for an ave age of 34.8 yards per punt. Here are the scores for the season: Southeastern Eastern .... Southeastern Northeastern Southeastern Pershing . . . Southeastern Denby ..... Southeastern Hamtramck Southeastern Southeastern. . AIC' ZA. 1 I- I QLIHL Cfmnlvste 5. fri' U i l li l l l l l98l CARNIVAL LTHOUGH it was pouring last December 2, the school was crowded for this, the sixth of Southeastern's carnivals. The theme this year was A Night in Mexico, and the life-size mural decorations were a wonder to see. It seemed that nothing could stop these kids, who wanted a good time in a real Mexican fashion, and found it. Every show was filled for all performances- the old stand-byes like the Variety Show, the basketball game, the dancing in the gyms, the movies, and even the baby of them all, the Hall of Science, which was added last year to take the place of the Old Freak Show. The Hall of Science, against expectations, proved one of the most popular events of the evening, largely because of the presence of Mr. Bloomfield, the wizard of the checker board. One of the most pleasant things in this carnival, as in all others, too, was the presence of so many of the alumni. Miss Faye Beebe, librarian, was general chairman. Auditorium, December 16. I think that I shall never forget the Christmas concert of December, 1938. It was not my first one, rather it was my fifth, as my brother took me to several before I entered Southeastern as a pupil. Beyond doubt, l1owever, it was the Finest of those I heard. As usual all the various music groups participated, and as usual too, the results showed all the evidence of faithful, hard work. But the total effect this time Was, so far as my experience was concerned, altogether unusual, and the difference was all to the good. The selections constituting the program, the interpretations of them, and the beauty of tl1e visual spectacles presented were all way beyond my humble ability to describe. And the Toy Symphony was the proudest thing of all. Whimsical, melodious, and humorous, it proved a delightful surprise to a thor- oughly entertained audience. The melody was carried by a part of the stringed section, While the rest of the orchestra accompanied them on toy instruments. That, I say, was a dilly. Later, Shirley Sullivan sang the beautiful Ave Marin, pleasing everyone to no end, and for the impressive night-cap the combined choral groups, with orchestra and organ, sang The Spirit of Christmas, a melodious fantasia that filled one to overflowing with the beauty of the Yule spirit. And the names behind it all-naturally, Mrs. Mary Ridley, with Emerson Ballmer, Frieda Athern, and Matilde Kesler. GIRLS'BASKETBALL HOEVER HEARD OF THIS-Southeastern girls' basketball team ending a season with a dope-sheet which shows that we took three shellackings and gave three. The villains were Nortl1eastern, Hamtramck, and W'esterng the victims, Eastern, Miller, and Mackenzie. Of course, this is way below Coach Dorothy Hyne's life-time average, but at that the percentage is .5oo, something to be more proud than ashamed of. Graduation, as usual, played the old meany with the squad, taking Shirley Conroy and Donelda McLean. Donelda, who played Varsity for three full seasons, was captain and outstanding player of tl1e 1939 squad. Beatrice Bohez and Margaret James show in the Senior List for January 1940. BOYS' SWIMMING THE old saying, one, two, three, and y0u're out, made no exception of Southeastern. For three years Coach Froehlich's boys from jungle Town were supreme in the art of swimming. On their fourth attempt they were, as the saying goes, out, for Highland Park, their first opponent, laid them low by the score of 53 to 39. Out of the nine first places Southeastern was able to take only three. Colby, Sherman, and Kurtz were responsible for these. Then Southeastern hit its stride, and went the rest of tl1e way undefeated. Cass, our Hrst victim after Highland Park, went down under the score of 45 to 39. Some of the highlights of this meet were Colby winning the 100 yard back- stroke, Ed Shaw the 100 breast, and Sam Douglas the 220 free style. Next came the Cosmos, who took an even worse defeat of 51 to 33. Then there were the Indians with their scalping knives all sharpened, but the wild men from the Jungle would not be scalped. Managing to out-swim them in the relay, South- eastern gained the victory, 43 to 413 that was too close for comfort. The other two victories were as easy as falling off a log. Northeastern was submerged by the score of 65 to IQ and Northern, the last team on the list, 59 to 24. Ralph Sherman was outstanding in the meet with Northeastern, he placed first in the 40 yard free style and second in the 100 yard event. Southeastern was third in the city meet. Ray Colby was the most outstanding swimmer of the year. He went through the East Side races undefeated and ended his three years of high school by winning the backstroke in tl1e city finals, making him City Champ. For his out- standing feats in swimming, Colby was chosen All American high-school back- stroker. Colby was l1igh scorer at 49, but Ralph Sherman had 37, Sam Douglas 30, Jim Kurtz 28, Ed Shaw 28, and Peter Taormina 25, w11ich helped to keep Southeastern near the top. INDOOR TRACK ITH the breaking of records and the winning of tl1e East Side Champion- ship, the students of Southeastern were looking forward to tl1e first City Championship since Leighton Boyd came to coach track at his Alma Mater. But our hope was to no avail for we were not strong enough to out-run Cooley, last year's Champs. Many records of long standing were broken this year by our fleet-footed athletes. Gene Hirsch broke l1is own record of 48 ft. by throwing the twelve- pound shot 49 ft. 5 in. in the Eastern meet. Harold Carrick, Southeastern's 440 ace, ran it in 56.6, bettering the old record by 2.4 seconds. Bill Hock broke-Fry's records by clearing the cross-bar at 11.6 ft. Ray Peterson and Art Jenkins, twins of the high-jump, who were tied at 6 ft. 1 in., bettered their last year's mark by 2 inches. Records tied this year were the 220 and the low hurdles. Patsalis tied tl1e 220 record at 26.2 during the Miller-Pershing meet, while Schoenback tied tl1e city record in four seconds flat for the low l1urdles. In the East Side Title Race Southeastern was first in six of eleven events, but also placed in all of them. Mlhen the officials added the points they found that Southeastern was 23 points ahead of Hamtramck, our nearest opponent. Besides tl1e record breakers there were O'Keefe, who took first in the 8805 Hill, third in tl1e 30 yd., and Roehrs, second in the shot-put. All helped to win the East Side title. --sm QA, . Every member of the aggressive team did more tl1an her sl1are in the meets witl1 the city's strongest swimming squads. The girls showed tl1e results of eflicient, faithful coaching by Miss Helen Hirt as they battled their way to the top, defeating Northeastern, Hamtramck, VVestern, and coming out first i11 a triangular meet with Eastern, and Northern. Only one meet was dropped and that was once again to Highland Park, who it seems is all unconquerable foe. Through graduation, tl1e team will lose Bette Briggs, Mary Cross, Phyllis Johnston, Doris Kennedy, Gertrude Lorenz, Priscilla MacDowell, Ceola Messer- Schmidt, Marge Rathbun, and Betty Schrader. In the meets that were held this year Hamtramck proved to be the most manageable. Of the first eight places the Cos111os were able to place only one, John Mfhite, city ace in both indoor and outdoor track. Following I'Vl1ite across the line were Harold Garrick, Russ Nalle, Dale Brown, Jim Guinane, Harry Mugridge, Brandon O'Keefe, and Bill Beel placing in the order 11a1ned. Perl1aps 110 0ll161' department of Southeastern has its resources so con1pletely utilizedg yet we suspect that the actual statistics covering the library and its services are known to but a small part of our 3900 pupils. YVith a view to correcting this deficiency we called upon Miss Beebe and Mrs. Johnson, tl1e librarians, who readily agreed to co-operate. X'Ve were unable to get answers to all our questions, but we did learn many interesting things. At present our library consists of about 7500 books, and receives fifty periodi- cals. In recent years, we have received about 300 new books annually, through tl1e regular budget allowance of the Board, as gifts fron1 school clubs, and as other special presentations. Every day about 1100 to 1200 students visit the library, and from 150 to 200 books are charged out daily. Books most frequently drawn are on social sci- ences and literature. The librarians are aided by a staff of 40 pupil-assistants. Meinbership on tl1e Staff is contingent upon good scholarship as a principal requisite. lncidentally no less than fifteen inenibers of tl1e present staff were invited to the 1939 Honor Banquet for high scholarship. Harve Pierce, the lad who led the Jungaleer scoring attack, was chosen All City forward and Captain on the All State Team. His fellow player, George Hackman, was placed on the All City Team also, but only received honorable mention on the All State. Beside Pierce and Hackman, there were Gleffe, Eckhardt, Lund, and Grunis who played Hne ball all season. Next season we'll be handicapped with the loss of Pierce, Hackman, Glelfe, and Eckhardt, who are graduating this year. Southeastern Pershing ............ 22 Southeastern. Not unusual, perhaps, was the superior type of students who comprised the list of invited guests, and though every speech, and both musical interludes, were splendid, we suspect this was also true at previous banquets. Distinguishing this year's affair from others, however, was the presence of Sup- erintendent Frank Cody, invited to deliver the Address of the evening. Everyone expected something special, nobody was disappointed. The theme of the program was based on the analogy of the Building of the Ship. Preceding Mr. Cody the guests heard Marian Miller and George Owen, Seniors, and Mrs. Ellen Greene Adams, class of ,27. All three speeches won enthusiastic, sincere applause, they deserve it, as did the musical entertainment by VVilliam Rockey, flutist, and Irene Loeber, vocalist. Oh yes, the menu! Mlell, for those interested in the records, we recall being served condiments, gelatin salad and sherbet cups, chicken a-la-king with parsley potato, rolls, ice cream with cakes and coffee. Miss Amy Webster was the genius behind it all this year, and we admit she is a genius. The list of Honor guests follows: 303. This year the seniors chose to adopt a different method to celebrate this long awaited day of merriment. Classes were attended as ordinary until 1:30 when books and studies were abandoned for the preparation for the parade of the houses. Leading the grand event were the boys of House 203 decked out in elaborate Greek costumes. The highlight of their part was an enormous float Qboat?j carrying Jason and his Argonauts. Next came girls' House 303 exhibiting the latest' in Spring hats a la mode pots and pans. Then followed boys' House 202 displaying what the well dressed sissy wears, with their slogan, Lettuce have peas. House 323 presented impersonations of such famous people as the Lone Ranger, Hedy LaMarr, and Ferdinand the Bull. Last romped in little girls and boys from House 223 and stirred the memories of those child- hood days by playing London Bridges, Ring around the Rosie, and The Farmer in the Dell. The parade of the faculty was headed by the ball and chain bearer in the person of Mr. Bender who immediately retired to the dog house and chilled the audience with the Prisoner's Song. A boy student fMr. Stockingy accom- panied a Mfonderer in Aliceland fMiss Macliarlanej in viewing a world of events slightly distorted. These included a song and dance routine by those lovable Dionne Quintuplets fMrs. Cameron, Mrs. Sargent, Miss Beyer, Miss Larson, and Mrs. Ferrisj , who strange as it seems were in the company of Mama and Papa Dionne QMr. Deakin and Miss Kleinj. Bedecked in sandwich cards were the four queens QMiss Crow, Mrs. Downs, Miss Van Auken, and Miss Beebej who each in her turn tried to o11t-do the other in recitation. Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee QMiss Schroeder and Miss Elsie Smithj piped a very pleasant Wl1istle Wliile You I'Vork after which the Dictators, Adolph Reeves and Benito Ca1nmett overwhelmed Neville umbrella Kumler with their deviltry. Then George Hackman and his highfalutin City Champ varsity galoots took it on the chin from the girls' varsity basketball team. And finally, to end an endless afternoon of cockeyed merriment, the Seniors nosed out the Faculty basketball team, 286 to 111. The scoring machine collapsed, and so did the bleachers, and everyone crawled home exhausted.
