The inevitable disappointments, the failures, the distresses to which all students are heir have been stub- bornly resisted by an abundance of joyful experiences. We all have had our share of both kinds of vibrations, in their glorious fullness, and we come to the end with a rich feeling of grati- tude for it all. It is in the hope that we shall not too soon lose the memory of these three short years at South- eastern that the class has caused this slight souvenir to see the light of day. F.u:uLTY S1-lmons . M AYBI-:ESM IJRAMATICS Ac:T1v1'r1Es M Usnx. Svowrsm FEATURES Fon M EN ONLY If X? - The dedication of this annual marks a decided detour from the direction usual- ly pursued by the Aryan Staff. lt has been customary to offer our salute steadfastly to those members of our faculty who, throughout many years, have maintained a continuing inspiration to the entire school. But after all, it isn't the years that count, and surely, to anyone who can achieve a notable success in student guidance and leadership without benefit of long years, such a salute cannot be denied. It is in recognition of this fact that the Aryan Staff cordially dedicates this, our best effort, to Mr. Hutchinson. 1935 A RYA N 1935 DOUPLD JUR'-I EDITOR-In-CHI EF' ITDRV LOUGHBOROIKH LITERQRV EDITOR FQFZVQN JQCK LQUX fvonrf QUCF. In January, 1917-the United States had not yet officially become a belligerent-the school was finished and ready for use. The present main section, running north and south parallel to Fairview Avenue, is part of the original structure, as are the east-west wingsg however, these flanking sections extended eastward only as far as the rooms now used by the history classes. At that time this history room section was used for the cafeteria. During its first years, the building had to get along without its present landscaping. How different it must have looked! In spite of the absence of trees, shrubs, and lawn, the new structure must have seemed pretty fine to its early occupants. True, its inner walls were barren of athletic trophies, class composites, beautiful pictures, and artistic Pewabic bubblersg nevertheless, it was large, modern, and-alma mater. The athletic plant consisted of a single gymnasium, and but one pool, both of which are now used exclusively by the boys. Three years ago this old pool was completely modernized. What is now the athletic storeroom, its doorway piercing the wall just east of the janitor's office, was the bookstore. The present bookstore was then occupied by the general office of the school. Imagine what a time tardy pupils had trying to slip by the office then! And where the school office is today was the library. Perhaps that is why one of our ''charter-member-teachers'' continues absent-mindedly to go into the office and ask for that last issue of Harpers. A change easier to get used to is the one that removed two grade-rooms , 301 and 303, from their location immediately above the office, although we find it hard to visualize what the corridors must have looked like, inasmuch as there were absolutely no lockers in the building, as edifice built for and soon sheltering 1,800 vivacious youngsters, grades seven, eight, and nine only. Four grade-rooms accommodated the entire student body, which was not segregated. Charter grade-room teachers were Miss MacFarlane, Miss Carr, Miss Nancy Phelps, and Miss Parmerlee. Mr. Corns, now at Central, was Principal, struggling along with a faculty of thirteen. We do not associate his difficulties with the number of teachers. This honor roll of Mayflower-ers included these twelve teachers still with us: Miss Beebe, Miss Beyer, Mr. F roelich, Miss MacFarlane, Miss Martin, Miss Nancy Phelps, Miss Sargent, Miss Seath, Mr. Shimp, Miss M. C. Sullivan, Miss M..G. Sullivan, and Mr. Whitney. In good time activities got under way, and the first Aryan saw th light of day in June 1919, a mere pamphlet issued quarterly. Sometime later the Jsngaleer, worthy journal of Southeastern, came into existence. Miss Anderson, assistant principal, arrived at Southeastern in 1918, and in 1921 this school sent out into the world its first graduating class, hopeful group of nineteen ambitious youngsters. The class of May, 1935 contains about 520 seniors, and there are over a hundred teachers on our faculty today, for a student body of some 3,T50. Mr. Stocking came to Southeastern from Central in 1926, some two or three years after Mr. Moffat arrived. At approximately the same time, in 1923, Miss Sarah Phelps was added to our faculty as a teacher of mathematics. When Mr. Camrnett came in 1928, the house of which he was given charge had slightly more than 375 boys, in contrast to some 600 or more in House 203 today. In 1930, hardly more than four years after Mr. Stocking's arrival, the splendid co- operation between him and the Board of Education began to show results. In January of that year the new additions to Southeastern were completed. Mr. Diekoff was brought in to complete our present House set-up. In the meantime, the splendid athletic field was acquired, and only just in time, for immediately after we got it the late depression came and all such improvements ceased. Thomas I The time has come when we must part From those we'1'e grown to lore, I n steps we tread thru coming years, You'll be our light above. The mem'ries of our days in school Will erer be so dear, That with the passing of our youth, We'lI dream of High School years. 1 I We realize now the value of The struggle and the joys, The active work and social times We had as girls and boys. We live in hopes of meetings of Our class of thirty-five, to keep our Alma hlater Dear, F orever in our lives. During the school hours of this day the Seniors ruled supreme, dethroning the teachers from their classes, unmercifully administering tenth hours to them, and sending humbly submissive ones, bitterly weeping, back to the houses when they were caught wandering around the halls without passes. Throughout the breadth and width of the school, the Green and Gold insignia of the Seniors was a badge of distinction and power. . Immediately following the regular classes, the students crowded the gymnasium to watch the Senior-Faculty Frolic. Mr. Stocking entered first with his mother, father, deaf grandfather, and little brothers and sisters, all fresh from the country and appropriately dressed. These romping children, once distinguished faculty, pulled in a trailer containing the famed quintuplets, or at least their faculty duplicates, faithfully attended by Dr. Dafoe and two capable registered nurses. When Mr. Stocking's brothers attempted to lug these helpless, squirming babies from the trailer to the floor, the spectators were convulsed with laughter. Mr. Stocking then bellowed forth a boast that he could beat any Senior in the manly art of fisticuffs. The Senior President, John Hammer, with his ma and sister, came straight from the bowery to answer the challenge. Then, after introducing their families and seconds, the two contestants struggled through four rounds of good, modern pugilistics-well at least it was modern. Again the Seniors triumphed, and the badly battered referee, Mr. Froelich. who seemed to have gotten the worst of it, raised Hammer's hand in token of victory. Then, to prove indisputable the superiority of the Senior Class, the Senior officers defeated the Maybee officers in a terrific kiddie-car race, although some of us suspected trickery. Miss Parks, on a streamlined kiddie-car, beat the Senior Vice-President, Clara Ovens, much to the deep chagrin of the aristocratic Seniors. The program was completed by the annual Senior-Faculty basketball game and the varsity boys versus the varsity girls. Everybody won. This day will probably be long remembered by both parties and the classes of the future will always try to duplicate it. Be that as it may, however, never, never let it be said that the faculty of Southeastern are not able to put aside their dignity and become just plain kids! I've waited all my life for this moment , chuckled Marcus CHamburgJ Klein, as he sent Mrs. Dotten scampering back up a long stairway, down which she came expressly in violation of a large sign reading: UP ONLY , placed con- spicuously on a pillar. JAMES ICLDRIDGIC Eleclrician A,... , ,ROBERT IIAMMERICK Eighly-Il1rec 1 1935 ARYAN 1935 THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT December 14, 1935, marked one of the most beautiful Christmas concerts ever presented at Southeastern. The program began with a procession of the combined glee clubs into a cathedral, set among pine trees and snow. From within the cathedral the Senior chorus sang a few hymns in striking arrangement, after which was presented the dramatization of Why the Chimes Rang , and tableaux de- picting Holy scenes. Although the music was unusually difficult and elaborate, it was carried out exceptionally well and was wonderfully managed. We heartily congratulate Mrs. Ridley, Mr. Vollick, Miss Martin and the students on their splendid achievement. OPERA The traditional spring offering of the Music Department, featuring the Choral Fantasia from Carmen, was given in the school auditorium Friday evening, May 10. The audience, large and appreciative as they have always been at these spring music festivals, was particularly responsive to the beauty of the selections. Lovely costuming did much to lend a touch of faithfulness to the atmosphere of Bizet's immortal opera. The Opera Class, around which the program was built, was effectively assisted by the Boys' and Girls' Senior Glee Clubs as well as by both Junior Glee Clubs. What proved to be a sparkling feature of the fiesta of Music was the singing of Sarah Romine, soloist. lt was easy to understand why Sarah was a finalist in the recent Radio Audition Contest, sponsored by Emerson Gill at Webster Hall. Mrs. Ridley, Miss Martin, and Mr. Vollick can be justly proud of a very fine achievement, one for which those fortunate enough to be in the audience are deeply grateful. Vinely-Iwo Ill I 1935 A RYA N 1935 BASEBALL ln tune with the Tigers, the Southeastern varsity nine took the liastern Division Championship for the second consecutive year, and entered into a three-way tie for the city championship, with Northern and Chadsey as co-holders. Sam Kunath, Jungaleer hurler, gained entrance to the high school hall of fame by turning in a no-hit, no-run game against Hamtramck. The team did well behind him and gave him a three run margin of victory, the final score being: Southeastern 354---llamtramck 0. SWHMNHNG The Jungaleer swimming team closed a successful season by emerging runner-up to Northeastern in the City Championship race. The Southeastern natators had a perfect season, winning all pre-final meets wit.h a fairly comfortable margin. ln the city finals, however, a well balanced Northwestern team overwhelmed our lxoys to the tune of 51 to let. Budd ltibble. Southeastern backstroker. took first in his specialty with a time of 1:05. ll. one second short of the existing record. Southeastern was also credited with fourth place in the 200 yd. relay, second in the medley relay, and with the help of Al tironan, fourth in the 220 yard free style. These scores obtained for the Jungaleers the position as runner-up for the city swimming championship. TRACK As with the other two winter sports, Southeastern's track team, although they did not capture any championship, enjoyed a good season. The .lungaleers lost close meets to Hamtramck and Eastern, which schools, incidentally, won first and second places respectively in the City Championship meet with a difference of only one-half point between them. Denby and North- eastern were both humbled by our men, the scores: Denby . 2l , Southeastern TL Northeastern 1 A ,,., , , Southeastern 85 ln defeating Northeastern 85 to 1, the Jungaleers established an all time city record. Northeastern taking only a third place in the hurdles to prevent an absolute shut-out. Southeastern placed three men in the city finals, Wilfred Spencer, Richard Bell, and Francis Carlson, who gained sixth place for us with a total of eight points. FOOTBALL Southeastern T , . . Northern 0 Thus ended the first game of the Jungaleer's most successful football season in the past three years. Northeastern, last year's champs, just nosed out a T to 6 victory over our fighting eleven, and it appeared that Coach Wayne Nester had developed a powerful team. The real reason the season is considered a success is two-fold: The Jungaleers were the only league team in the Eastern division to score against Hamtramck, this yearis champions, and-high crowning achievement--Eastern High, our greatest rivals, went down in a 7 to 6 defeat in the best game played by our eleven this year. CROSSCOUNTY Southeastern's Cross-Country team retained the city title won last year. Our harriers accomplished this in spectacular fashion, winning by the lowest score ever recorded in a city championship meet. Great stuff, boys! Your record-breaking performance will long be remembered by sportdom: and too, Coach Boyd, congratulations! May you be as successful in all your undertakings as you have been with this great Cross-Country team. N inefy-three f 1. IS im 3.2. 5 i -xx 1935 ARYAN 1935 -Xl sv TK .T AVP X Q' at GOLF The golf team repeated its championship form, winning in both match play and medal play meets to become city champs in both events. Coach Froelich's proteges, Charles Eggleston, Drew Eggleston, John Law, and John Barr, combined forcles to capture the match play title, leading the runners-up. Northern, by eleven stro es. BOYS' BASKETBALL A strong but erratic Southeastern basketball team went through a mediocre season this year losing to Denby, Northeastern, Hamtramck, Northern, and Eastern. The prospects for next year, however, are bright. The Jungaleer reserves turned in a perfect season, defeating all comers with a comfortable margin. If this team lives up to expectations we should have a championship next year. This looks very bad on the surface, and there is no sense in claiming that there is much in it to rejoice over. Yet that is not all there is to say about the l93fl1-35 basketball team-not by a long shot. Anyone who saw the games-all the gamesvfwill have to admit that, although defeat was our usual dish this year, our ball tossers gave us plenty of thrills for our money, which was little enough. Most of the time the five boys out there on the floor battled hard, mighty hard, and to the best of their ability. They gave everything they had, and the smash-up of Scotty Morrison and Luke in the Denby game showed a typical specimen of their courage. Though knocked half goofy, neither one would pause even long enough to interrupt the play. Then there was that wildfire Grosse Pointe game that we packed in the old kit bag and hauled along home. That alone was worth the season ticket, to say nothing of the see-saw Northern game that had Eddie Powers chewing his nails, and the equally thrilling Hamtramck game, always a battle royal, and this is no exception. But the crowning thrill of the whole season was that never-to-be-forgotten whirlwind finish to the Eastern game that fairly ripped us loose from our natural foundation. Bad season? Well, maybe, but nevertheless plenty-well loaded, with more than our money's worth. GIRLS' SWIMMING The girls' swimming team splashed on to overwhelming victories over North- western, Northeastern, Central, and Eastern this season. The strong team easily subdued all comers and wound up a very successful season by staging an enjoyable splash party with Grosse Pointe High School. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girls on the Basketball team enjoyed a very line season this year. The first game, with Hamtramck, was the only game lost and the feminine cagers won the next four games with a comfortable margin. All the games were well played and characterized by a splendid scoring attack under the leadership of Captain Margaret Morrow. The boys were given a display of the prowess of the opposite sex in the game played during the Senior-Faculty party and just escaped with an eight to eight tie. Three seniors, Eileen Lull, .lean Happell, and Clara Ovens, have played on the varsity the entire three years of their high school career. Ninety-four -5 TF 1935 ARYAN 1935 HONOR BAN QUET HE EIGHTH annual Honor Banquet, attended by students of high scholastic attainments, students who held honorary positions in the school, or those who had perfect attendance for their three years in high school, was held May 15, 1934 in Southeastern's cafeteria. Frances Robinson, the chairman, opened the exercises by telling the purpose of Class Day. Hay Hoffman, president of the senior class, presented the trowel to the representative of the Maybee Class, Donald Jury. After the Senior Girls' Octette had sung a lovely musical number, the senior memorial, a portable loud speaker, was presented by George Pipiringos. Helen Schneider, an alumna of Southeastern, and a member of the class of June, 1927, gave an address to the seniors as a representative of the alumni. Miss Flora Anderson, assistant principal of Southeastern, gave a truly inspiring message to the graduates, and Mary Ruth Sollars, an outstanding student of the class, delivered the valedictory for the seniors. The program was concluded by the singing of the class song, which was com- posed by Betty Jane Jaqua. The singing was led by Bosabelle Smythe. Senior Maybee Reception On December 20, 1934, the annual Senior-Maybee Reception was held in the Girls' Gym. Paul Huff and his orchestra furnished the music. Refreshments were served. HOU SE OF LINDBERGH The House of Lindbergh, the most recent of the six houses, has made a fine record during the short time it has existed. High scholarship has always been its out- standing characteristic, and, last year, the house was awarded the Hi-Y Scholarship Cup as a permanent trophy, after leading the other houses six consecutive semesters. Although this phase of school life has been particularly stressed, the House of Lindberg has won its share of laurels in inter-house athletics, having acquired more than one-third of the Clarence Snyder Memorial Banners during the past year. The teams representing the house have been noted for their sportsmanship and fine spirit, whether in victory or in defeat, exemplifying the spirit of cooperation ex- pressed by Lindbergh's famous slogan, We , which has been adopted as the motto of the house. Our varsity teams have benefited greatly from the athletes contri- buted by this house, as many of the budding Howes, Granges, and Bonthrons have come from 202. The chores and burdens are assumed by the council under the capable guidance and leadership of Mr. Diekoff, the house principal. During the last semester, the house became the recipient of a piano, the gift of one of the mem- bers. Before morning record, those who wish join in song, starting the day in a better mood, enabling them to cope with the day's problems with a finer spirit. THE HOUSE OF HAWTHORNE The House of Hawthorne is one of the most progressive houses at Southeastern. This house was the first to adopt the council plan, as well as methods of discipline, both of which have been introduced into all the houses in the school. The student council consists of twelve girls with high scholastic records and other necessary qualities of leadership. Each term the girls in the 11B nominate ten or twelve outstanding members of their classg these nominees are given a chance to take over the duties of the council. At a meeting of the councillors and Miss Phelps, four of these nominees are selected and are installed as members of the council when they become 11A's. ' Each of the twelve girls has a task to perform in addition to her regular hour of council duty. These are: caring for the plants, making out the honor roll and nega- tive roll, securing entertainment for records, taking attendance, cleaning the house in general, and taking charge of the second hand bookstore. One hundred lhree 1935 ARYAN 1935 Money for the treasury is accumulated from various sources. A penny is charged for ink, two cents for tardiness, and five cents for house stationery. In order that the girls who contribute to the treasury receive benefit from it, new things for the house are purchased each term. A beautiful globe has lately been acquired, as well as new plants and vases. All the above undertakings, which have worked so successfully, prove how care- fully each has been considered before being put into practice. This is in accordance with the House motto: Be sure you are right: then go ahead. HOUSE OF GRACE COOLIDGE Under the competent guidance of its principal and student president, the House of Grace Coolidge has attained new heights this year. Our president, because of' her desire to make the house more interesting to the girls, and to create a st.ronger spirit of cooperation among the student members, has, with the aid of' the coun- cillors, completed a constitution for House 223. The members of the council have been divided into six committees, such as the Ways and Means Committee, the Card Committee, The Record Committee, and the General Appearance Committee. A meeting is held by the Council, during which reports from the various committees are discussed and suggestions are offered by the councillors to solve our various problems. Our councillors are girls of initiative, leadership, reliability, and high scholastic standing. Six hundred and twenty girls constitute our enrollment. Of this group many are outstanding in various fields. Ruth Ebbinghouse, Winifred Culik, and Ruth Braun are very accomplished musicians. Virginia Buchdahl, Marie Buano, and Helen Boehmke were members of the varsity basketball team,. We have two girls specializing in languagesg .lane Fansler is studying Latin and French, while French, German, and Latin have been mastered by Winifred Culik. We also have two girls highly accomplished in mathematics. Jane Allen, our own artist, has already shown a brilliant versatility in Mrs. Gaulka's art class. The students of our house have worked very diligently and profitably to em- bellish another page in the history of the House of Grace Coolidge. HOUSE OF LOWELL Smile in defeat but win your share Qf1'tCt0f't6S.,, This motto well exemplifies the fine spirit which is so characteristic of the mem- bers of this House. Our athletic teams have not attained a large number of vic- tories, but the good sportsmanship displayed when defeated is a grand example of living up to our motto. We have several prominent girls on the varsity basketball team and our House is well represented on the bowling team. Our scholarship record has been, and is, one of the highest in the school. Of the honor students graduated in the past year, more were from this House than from any other House in the school, while our Mary Ruth Sollars won a scholarship to Transylvania College, Kentucky. With the assistance of our House Principal and the services of our twelve fine councillors, the pupils manage to derive the necessary benefit from their vacant periods which are used for studying. The House is not, as most people imagine, a dreary and unattractive study room. Several plants and a fish aquarium, taken care of by our flower girl, Blossom Nelson, decorate the front of the room, and the Maybee Class of fall, 1934, donated four beautiful hand painted pictures which are hung at the back of the room. Draped windows help give the hall a warm, home-like appearance. With all the opportunities of study open to our girls, may every student who leaves our House go out to Smile in defeat, but win her share of victorieslw One hundred four 1935 ARYAN 1935 HOUSE OF TWENTIETH CENTURY ARGONAUTS Recently the Jungaleer made the statement that the boys from houses other than 203 had entered and been graduated from Southeastern without having had a glimpse of the three track banners as well as a few others. It is trueg athletic supremacy has belonged to 203 for eight successive semesters. Equally true, and decidely embarrassing to many T. A. C. men, is the fact that Argonauts have entered and been graduated from Southeastern without getting a chance even to see the Scholarship cup. Yet few times have we been at the bottom of the list. That this house has not completely forgotten its effort for mental achievement is best proved by the fact that T. A. C. men won the debating championship of 1934 as well as district championship for the school in the oratorical and declamation contests. This year the finalists in the declamation contest were 203 men, namely, Morton Breen, William Deeb, and George Cromie. Again William Butler and Jacob Eppinga were first and second respectively in the oratorical contest. Several Post Graduates of 203 including Don Brewer, John Eckley and Ray Hoffman have coached house teams to championships. This has not only proved a relief of responsibility to Mr. Cammett, but also a splendid guidance project to boys interested in health education work as a career. Printed election ballots for house officers and councillors, printed envelopes for report cards, having on them names of officers, councillors. chairman and members of committees, as well as having the names of the officers and councillors painted on the blackboard, have done much to improve morale and build up the idea of its being an honor to serve on a functioning council. HOUSE OF ROOSEVELT Formerly we were called the House of Whittier , but it was recently decided to get a more appropriate name. After much discussion, Roosevelt was voted the new name for House 222. The method used to preserve order is very simple, yet effective. At the beginning of the hour, one complete row of seats is cleared of all students: then, if there are any disturbers during the period, they are moved over into this row. I f they con- tinue their annoyances, they are taken up to Mr. Moffat, who hears the case and deals with them. The house is run almost entirely by the councillors, with Mr. Molfat's backing. The councillors sign passes and take general care of the house. livery term the entire house votes for its ofhcers for the current semester. Lately Mr. Moffat has done much to provide entertainment in the House during the records. He recently organized a quartet, and under his direction the singers have shown surprising mastery of their art. The house has contributed a rich crop to the varsity teams, including Wilfred Spencer of the track team, Budd Ribble of the swimming team, and several valuable men to the basketball team. In house sports many new faces have come to the front and given promise of making good material. Our latest effort to make House 222 more pleasant and useful was the purchase of a radio. The idea was first suggested by Mr. Moffat, who helped with the selection and actual purchase of the instrument. A general contribution provided funds which brought us the radio in time for the recent World Series, as well as the many splendid educational programs being broadcast. Lay aside your fantastic. common novels and read the refreshing story in the most colorful chapter of the history of our country-that of our progress in democratic education. The pioneers of America on February 13, 1635, founded the historic Boston Publick Latin School . This lowly miniature was the forerunner of our modern high school. Philemon Pormont was selected to the lofty position of schoolmaster. Any number of peculiar contrasts between our school and this can readily be de- tected, especially in the simple entrance requirements, these being merely the mastery of the elementary reading of the English language and a minimum age of seven or eight years. Here too, the antiquated custom of permitting only the boys to receive even the rudiments of education was strictly and conscientiously followed, the girls being considered mentally and physically unfit for such work. At this time school houses were scarce, being located in or near the few cities and rural towns that dotted the country. The students often walked for miles through deep snows to secure an elusive and hardearned education. The building itself was of a small, squat type with few furnishings, scarcely any books, and the well-known board of education lying conveniently close to the harsh, ever watch- ul teacher. Today the pendulum has swung far in the opposite direction, and education has come practically to our doorg yet some of us vigorously object if we are forced to take a street car or walk a few blocks to school. lt seems impossible that we should have advanced so far in such a short time, but all the improvements and revisions exerted on our educational system have been brought about largely by the eager initiative and thirst for knowledge of the American people. We cannot now imagine ourselves trodding with our lunch boxes under our arms to a single room frame building, with the earth for a floor. paper greased with lard for windows, and a little wood stove as the sole source of heat.
