The personal token of Leviticus, through the senior classes ofjanuary and of May, 1934, to the students, faculty, and friends of Southeastern High School. Like Leviticus himself, it is rugged and plain, with no ill-fitting pretensions to things frankly out of reach, for the days of this Aryan's child- hood and youth were linancially perplexing, and a bit cloudyfthough the sun is novv bright as ever again. And it is such a sun as has lighted the last few months of the journey of our spirit incarnate from the Kentucky Hills that We, the Aryan Staff, wish its fellow seniorsgand stu- dents, and faculty, for the rest of their earthly days. n f' Q l m msg.: ff ll V VL ' 5. The debt, we repeat, is a heavy one and in a sense, can never be dis- charged, yet, there can be no harm in offering this acknowledgement, which, slight as it is, may achieve some degree of meaning with the assurance that it is offered in the same spirit as was the splendid contribution of Sergeant Alice, Cnow captainD, to our school. Mrs. Alice Sargent, born in Mt. Pleasant, has spent a good deal of her life in her native state. Her edu- cation has been extensive, being a graduate of both Central State Normal College at Mt, Pleasant and the Commerce and Finance College at the University of Detroit, besides having taken work at the Columbia University in New York. At the present time Mrs. Sargent is completing work on her Masters Degree, having already received her A. B. Degree from Detroit City College. Before she arrived at Southeastern to join the faculty she taught at Sault Ste. Marie, For her excellent work as a member of the Commercial Department during her seventeen years as a teacher here, she has recently been appointed head of that department. On that day the mammoth Mixed Sports Carnival for the non-varsity athletes was held, and boy oh boy oh boy, what a time it was! Participants of both sexes, numbering into the hundreds, enjoyed to the fullest extent all of the thrills of friendly athletic competition without any of the nerve- wracking strain attending varsity contests. Here indeed was something to be con- sidered when the question of the relative merits of intra-mural and interscholastic sports is discussed. To enjoy the stimulating excitement of one's favorite sport uncontaminated by the strain that the varsity player falls heir to was indeed a revelation to the con- testants. The events, most of which were held indoors, included practically every sport on the modern high school roster, even ping-pong came in for a prominent place, no less than five tables being kept busy all through the meet. The water events, which demanded both pools full time Cno NRA short hour code herel proved about as popular as anything on the entire calendar of activities. At supper time, the gallant jungaleer hosts, several hundred strong-and hungry -led their guests down to the lunch room, where fourteen tons of food were abruptly seen to disappear. It is rumored that Perry Deakin ate twenty-one egg sandwiches! and one olive. CThis last was swallowed whole and allowed to float freely, the idea being to note how high up in his throat it bobbed, it hit his palate, he knew at once he was-that is, he knew hegwell, it hit his palate and he hit the floor. Yes, dear children. Perry survived so Southeastern will probably have to be content with another basket-ball championship next year. Well, after the twenty-one sandwiches, the mob repaired to the gymnasium where, to the tunes of Ed Barrow and his musical hoodlums, they proceeded to polish the floor for a few hours. The report has it that Mr. Perrin finally carried the last quasi-athlete out the nearest Goethe street exit sometime after a darn late hour- boyoboyoboy, and, boop-a-doop! Who won ? ----- who cares, but if you're going to get snooty about it, we did, and mighty rude hosts we were, so there. Although the Music department regreted the necessity for continuing the suspension of the spring Opera another year, the program substituted proved a most delightful replacement, and one which went far to assuage the disappointment of the school's lovers of light opera. A most commendable feature of the May Festival is the fact that it permitted a wider participation on the part ofthe music students e-every element of the depart- ment being represented. The program, which included numbers by the band, the orchestra, and the boys' and girls' glee clubs, was featured by a community sing, directed by Mr. Fowler Smith, Supervisor of Music for the Detroit Public Schools. The Choral Fantasia, from Faust, proved a most inspiring climax to a glorious musical treat. Mrs. Ridley, Miss Martin and Mr. Vollick have much to be proud of. Ninety-J'ez'cu IQDAIQYAN34 .l.. -1 - ii,. 1 Basketball Farewell HE official bow to the departing basketball season, which promises to become one of Southeastern's most cherished traditions, was made in the girls' gym Thursday, March 22. A deli htful mixture of athletics, antics, acrobatics, and art, the demon- stration looked fir all the world like a junior edition of Detroit's well-known Scarab ball. . To certain Detroiters, it might sound like something little short of aesthetic sacrilege to mention a brace of mixed basketball games in the same breath with the Scarab affair. But we know what we're talking about. Up until noon or so on the day of the Last Roundup Cof basketball's greatsj, nothing more was proposed beyond the usual boys'4girls' varsity and the senior- faculty games. Then suddenly, sometime after luncheon, Cmaybe it was an overdose of olives and ice-creamj something hit Cammet+or maybe it was Mr. Stocking. We don't know what it was that hit him, but he called it an idea. Surely there is a better name for it. At any rate, by three o'clock the so called idea had completely matured, and from room 123, into the girls' gym came four he's and a her that defy description. All we know is that Mae West took one look at the ornate Mr. Diekoff and retired from public life, her spirit completely broken. In spite of all efforts to keep the exhibition a closed affair, it somehow or other sprang a leak, and before the first game started the place was overrun with Hollywood producers, publicity hounds and would-be managers to put the unearthly quintet- Miss MacFarlane, and Messrs. Stocking, Moffet, Diekoff and Cammet4under con- tract. Surely they should have been under something. We're not certain that a contract would have provided enough complete coverage. None of the professional ballyhoo- ers wlgs successful, however, in signing up our talentfwith the possible exception of Fran Buck. As we understand it, when he left his friends in the Congo, he promised to Bring 'em Back something that would bend their diaphrams into isosceles what- nots with laughing. At first our costumed cohorts were absolutely frigid, but when Frank got down on all his knees and threatened to burst right out crying-well, what's a poor fellow to do? After a brief parade around the gym, led by daddy Moffat and vivified by our own mongrel-bedecked brass band, the performers went through their dramatic presentations. These consisted largely of semi-silent withdrawals by each of Sco-pardon, Moffat's children, and finally a poem-what a poem! by William R., who hangs much around the office of Southeastern. After a graceful exhibition of rope skipping, which resembled the rising and falling of huge building-masses durin an earth- quake, the bedlam resolved itself into the regular Qmonkeyb business ofgthe day- the basketball games. The first attempt at sober nonsense after the rearrangement of misshapen sides grown bulgy from laughing at the stage-show, was made by the girls' and boys' varsity teams. Here the girls had a bit more trouble than they had anticipated. Miss Hirt figured the Wood gang would get two field goals and a foul, Miss Hyne conceded them a possible three points total. Blanche S. only shrugged her shoulders: One point and they're lucky, says I, and that was all she'd offer. Well, the she-coaches were all wet, against a paltry eighty-five points for the girls, the boys amassed the amazing total of nine solid plinkoes, although only one was a field goal, made for them by Morrow and Kuipers by accident. It seems these two female ball passers were hot on the tail of a trick pass by the Battling Kavanaugh, and, as the ball zoomed through the obligingly divorced legs of Ed Luke, they both made a stab for it. Well, their heads smacked together just as the ball reached them, Plame tum ta page 114 for mzztirzmztion of tbir article. One hundred five LLAIQYAN34 Football The Southeastern football team is yet in the making . The record at the end of the 1933 season showed but one tie, no victories and five defeats. For the most part, the squad was inexperienced, getting back only a few players who had any real previous varsity exrperience. Among them was Matt Brown, who this year was placed on the All City eam. The morale of the team was splendid and the student body displayed the same old jungaleer spirit, their only complaint was that it was too difficult to find a seat. Next year, opponents, watch out! Swimming The swimming team came through in great fashion, taking all their school meets by large margins, and topping this by finishing second in the City Championship series. Those who distinguished themselves in the City were Vic Menden and Henry Richard- son, first and second respectively in the 220, Bud Ribble, who was second in the back- stroke, and John Hancock, who not wishing to be outdone by the others, took second in the breast stroke, and was with Richardson and Ribble on the second place medley relay team. Varsity Basketball The basketball team was again the main attraction of Southeastern sports and the student body turned but in swarms to watch the boys do their stuff. In most of the games, the teams played reat ball, but in a few, they were dull and slow and failed to click. It was the loss ofithese few games that cost them a place in the playoffs, for, with but two exceptions, the teams were all closely bunched throughout the season. Cross Country The Cross Country Teams' record this year was something that Jungaleer rooters will be telling their grandchildren about for years to come. Coming to the end of a splendid season without a single defeat, it wound up its schedule with a brilliant climax, turning in for the City meet the lowest score total ever registered in Detroit City competition. The cast of characters was a fine one, and a fine cast bears repeating. They are-Jack Thomas, Wilfred Spencer, Bill Husted, Russel Bathhlames Delesie, and Emmett Bryant, and their coach Wayne Nester, Southeastern salutes you, Cross- countrv. lndoor Troclc The Southeastern indoor track team did not have an especially good season this fall. It won a triangular meet with Miller and Denby, and lost one with Eastern and Miller. A win was also gained against Northeastern, but the meet with Hamtramck was dropped by the Jungaleers. This record was somewhat of a surprise, particularly in view of the fact that almost all of the city-championshgn cross country team were members. Of course, it is true that cross country running emands other qualities in an athlete than do indoor track events. At any rate, it is encouraging to report that Coach Boyd is to have a large number of veterans back for next fall. With that to look forward to, we are expecting to tell an entirely different story next year. Girl's Field Hoclcey The Girls' athletic department has made sports available for every season of the year. In early fall the field hockey team, captained by Margaret Morrow and coached by Miss Blanche Shafarman, went through a successful tournament, losing only one game to Pershing. Bettyjane Hunt, Sally Hennigar, and Marjorie Doherty are promis- ing freshman material left for next year's varsity. One hundred ten IQAIQYAN34 The Carnival On December eighth Southeastern again opened its doors for the carnival bound crowds which did everything but remove the roof in the process of having a glorious good time from five until eleven o'clock. Interest for this annual charity carnival was stimulated by the election of a king, Don Brewer, and a queen, Betty Sutherland, and by rallies given on December fifth and sixth at which many home-talent radio celebrities were presented. Among the important features were basketball games, swimming meets, moving pictures, the White Elephant Sales, the Fortune Telling booths, and the all-colored minstrel show. The General Chairman this year was Mr. Sadler, of the exact science department. As usual, the party was a full-fledged success in every way, the revellers ouring a net return of over S1400 into the precious coffers. The money will in general be used to level off the distribution of the normal comforts incident to school life to which Southeastern believes all students are on the Whole equally entitled. The Christmas Concert The play, Why the Chimes Rang, by Elizabeth Apthrop McFadden, was pre- sented on December twenty-first, in the school auditorium. The audience saw drama- tized the story of an invalid child who was not able to attend Christmas Eve Services but dreamed she was attending them. Dramatic material was contributed by the Senior Dramatics class under the direction of Miss Littell, while the lovely Christmas music was furnished by the music department as its annual contribution to South- eastern at this season. The musical program was prepared by Mrs. Mary S. Ridley, Miss Hulda Martin, Mr. Vollick, and Mrs. Ethel Mathson. The performance of the tableaux was directed by Miss Blanche Shafarman. Ford Exhibition Contest The Ford Exhibition held at Convention Hall between November fifth and six- teenth was made the subject for an essay contest in which Edith Forster, a graduate of the january class, received third prize. Lesser prizes, of one dollar each, were won by the following Southeastern students: Eileen Bower, William Braden, Carl Braun, Bruce Chapman, Harold Helfman, Mary Hines, Ruth Klosky, Margaret McCall, J. D. Not stine, David Penny, Virginia Phelps, David Rankine, Janet Roberts, Henrietta Rybczynski, Dundas Short, Mary Ruth Sollars, Grace Spindler, Esther Sternberg, and Florence Van Buhler. Essay Contest A city wide essay contest was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the subject of which was: the advantages and disadvantages of the pro osed St. Lawrence waterway to our city and other surrounding cities. Ruth Ebbingliiouse, of House 223, won first prize, a silver cup, in this contest. Oratorical and Declamation Contest The annual declamation contest to determine the best declaimer in the freshman class was won by William Butler, House 203. Butler, a member of Miss Ethel Schroe- der's composition class, selected as his topic Thurston's Pleas for Cuba , a passage frequently used in similar state wide contests. The Twelfth grade Qratorical contest was won by Harold Helfman, speaking the oration entitled The Golden Calf. One hundred eleven 1 9 A I2 Y A N 3 '4' He Who Laughs-Lasts WERE MORTIFIED!
