One Hzmdrenl Tweng-three if Lggllfluvcfl1ryrix1nnn1W,,,?Qg Resume of Sports AST-SIDE championship was won by the Boys' Varsity Basketball team. They advanced to the city finals, but were turned back in the play-off at the Olympia by Highland Park. Basketball has again proved to be one of Southeastern's most successful sports. The Girls' Basketball team under Miss Hyne did not have a very successful season. Considerable difficulty was encountered in securing a smooth-working combination, and, as a result, the girls lost their first three games to Hamtramck, Eastern, and Highland Park. Gaining their stride toward the end of the season, the girls defeated McKenzie and Northeastern by decisive scores. Dorothy Stahl, Phoebe Hennigar, Wilma Hecker, Ernestine Nall, and Ione La Chapelle gave consistently good performances during the season. The .lungaleer football team got off to an excellent start winning its first game by a comfortable margin. After the first game, however, the teamis scoring power was broken by the loss of Glenn Smoot who went to Cleveland. Terryis shoulder injury, and Thill's sprained ankle further handicapped the team, which was unable to win any more games. Mussard and Coonfer represented Southeastern in the East-side-West-side football game. Sam Gaston will be the only letter-man back. The outstanding men of the team were Mussard, Coonfer, Joe Baikovitz, Peterson, Marquardt, and Shauers. The Boys' Swimming team brought its season to a successful close, winning every inter-school meet, and placing third in the City Meet. Don Goulding, James Gilhula, and Peter Collias were the most prominent swimmers on the team. The Girls' Hockey team with several veterans back lost only one game and won three. Had there been an All-City Hockey Team chosen Southeastern would no doubt have been well represented. The Boys' Reserve Basketball team made a splendid showing this season, winning nine games, losing three, and tying one. Philip Cornell and Bernard Sokolov proved to be the most valuable men on the team. In the past three years the reserve team has made the remarkable record of winning thirty-one of its thirty-five games. Although the purple and white track team has been unsuccessful in its outdoor meets, they have won three out of five of their indoor meets. The relay team placed fourth in the City Meet, and fifth place in shot put was won by Miller. The Cross-Country team scored a 'igrand-slam, winning all its inter-school meets, the East-side championship, and placing second in the City Meet. Outstand- ing on the squad for the year were Fred Brenner, George Gorman, and Byron Modlin. A One Hundred Twemgf-four P HF? 49 UMUIIFQS s,Y N BX 3 , Jjy 'XX iff-f K yeuwlflo ' -, ,-,,-, .
