Located on U.S. 74-76 business between Whiteville and Chadbourn, SC C,' while' surrounded by rural comunities, is within 50 miles of the Atlantic Coast and such major cities as Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, As one of North Carolina's'largest and fastest growing community colleges, SCC serves overp6000 students annually in college transfer, vocational, and adult educational programs. While students are top priority, the college serves its community- well with various services, including counseling, women,s centerf Resources for Student Leaming, and Retired Senior Volunteer Program. SCC attracts students largely from the su-rrounding counties of Columbus, Bladen, Brunswick, Robeson, and New H-anoverg but, stu- dents 'from such diverse areas as New York, the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and even Iran, are not uncommon. It is this meshing of the familiar and the new, the urban and the rural, that makes SCC an important part of both the educational structure andthe communityj V -X . .7 ig xllt , ,ae fd Nfl' ,H f fs- ,' If 3' so l i . ff l lil, The l98O Ramblings is the Southeastern Community College for the l979 1980 academic year Funds were provided by the SCC Student Government Associa tion subscription sales and advertisements The total circulag tion of the l980fRamblings.is' 500 ' copies. i i annual student publication of , 1.1-rf.-an-.. - DIRECTIGNS Mapping The Way Features -------- Involvement Competition ----1- Faculty And Staff 4-li Peep1e------i- Ads Clgging Dedieation-+------ . .A- , , 4 ' N- ,. -05 - , ,V -,VU ,,,J, -' - - -, .g. 29: ! ..K' .. . - tp 5 --2,153 - - .' The school is large enough to offer the student an exceptional education and small enough for him to develop one-on-one relationships with teachers and administrators. - The students and staff intermingle in many school-related activities including camp- ing and canoeing trips. SGA conventions. choir activities, and educational trips to Washington, D.C., Greece. and Europe. U 4 ,ni El ,I 'tl L sl? iz 4 ? i i l Equally important, whether it be completely off-campus or seated on a picnic table during breaks, is the time spent aside from the numerous perplexities of school life. Here. maybe more so than in class, the student and teacher can commu- nicate as individuals with both mutual and conflict- ing interests and needs. There is time to learn from one another, to rein- force each 0ther's beliefs, and, dare I say it? to disa- gree. It is these interactions, whether they be politi- cally. religiously. or artis- tically oriented - or just plain small talk - that spawn a comfortable and creative atmosphere here at SCC. The performance featured Allegro Brilliantef' Bagatelles, L'Occurrence', and O.P.U.S. 13 choreographed by nation- ally renowned choreographers. George Balanchine, perhaps the world's most famous choreographer, choreographed Allegro Brillianten while Ferdinand Nault choreographed O.P.U.S. I3' and Tom Pazik of the Atlanta Ballet the remaining two selec- tions. The Atlanta Ballet, founded by Dorothy Alexander in 1929, is a part of the founding of the ballet movement in America and was the first ballet company to be formed outside of New York City. As the first regional ballet company, the Atlanta Ballet, in 1956, hosted the first regional ballet festival and was instrumental in establishing the guidelines and precedents which have led to the formation of over 400 regional ballet companies in the five regionaljurisdictionsg it is also one of four major companies in the National Association for Regional Ballet. In 1973 the Atlanta Ballet Touring Ensemble was formed under the artistic direction of Robert Barnett. The touring ensemble is a member of the National Endowment for the Arts Dance Program and performs residencies throughout the country. This year alone, the dancers will have traveled more than 30,000 miles. In addition to the company's regular touring schedule, the company presents a full sea- son of performances at the Fox Theatre and performs regularly in more than 20 of Atlanta's city parks. The company offers lecture demonstra- tions in classical ballet technique, as well as demonstrations in basic movement, masterclasses, seminars, mini-concerts, workshops, history of dance and stage technology, and company management. During their three-day residency at SCC, the troupe conducted masterclasses designed especially for area dance instruc- New tors and their students, and presented a mid-day performance on the history of dance. This project was jointly supported by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Coun- cil and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. and the South- eastern Community College Performing Arts Committee. RONALD MCCARTER MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Aldous Huxley once said, f'Technical progress has merely pro- vided us with more efficient means of going backwardsf' These words are not reassuring. We have watched great technological progress ever since, only to see the traditional problems of man- ind repeat themselves. Global aggression, international threats, interest-groupl conflicts, and waste amid human need continue to shadow the istory of man. Man's journey will progress only when he acquires a wisdom transcending his own destructive self- ishness. We hope our brief sojourn together will help you make true progress on this complex journey. An appropriate subtitle for this annual could be Progress Through Wisdom and would be very indica tive of the human experience that has taken place at SCC this year This special experience is perhaps more crucial in the college experience than tests book work labs and other academic activities that a college primar ily provides People grow wiser through interaction with others it s all part of the growing up and maturing proc ess And indeed the SCC faculty staff and students have created a great social and educational atmosphere which is much needed in college life for the student to receive a well rounded education in academics social growth and leadership This kind of education has been reflected in the production of the l980 RAMBLINGS where nine conscientious and perseverant students worked oxertime to produce a quality result This is but one part of col lege life which mandates high performance or else itjust doesn t get done The reward is the experience received from having worked in such 1 manner to produce a posi tive and useful result This is what we the RAVIBLINIGS staff ire ill about Photographer and Graphies Coordinator 41 , l I fy , ' 'S' ,I - ,, sf sa ?Y 3 L it U VI 1 if fi ' 'A T fat fe t t . 2 T ' f r i ..c.
