ln a world undergoing such dramatic changes, it just is not possible for anyone to be untouched or unaffected. Students weren't hermits on the sheltered island of SEIVIO, they were active citizens involved in a fast-changing and complex society. The university may be located in an obscure cor- ner of the nation, but political speakers, artistic lectures, and student participation brought SEIVIO to the heart of the country's activities. Events surrounding national politics made the White House seem like a theater housing a play with many acts and scenes. Students watched with the rest of the world as office holders from the attorney general to presi- dential advisers became public enemies and even a long term president resigned. Voting became a well-guarded citizen's right when people realized that the new president and vice-president took office without having been directly chosen by the people. On campus, students were aware of their power as voters and their responsibility to choose the best leaders for the state and nation. Senatorial candidates were invited to debate on campus, political science classes and clubs worked at local Republican and Democratic headquarters, and students were urged to express their opinions and vote on local issues such as the public health issue.
