SEMO expands Cape's activities and economy With its weathered copper dome rising above the town, the structural symbol of SEMO attracts community attention. From its lofty height in the center of Cape, the University draws people inward and commands the respect due a century- old institution. While thousands of townspeople give little thought to how the school goes about its business, SElVlO continues to build an impressive record of service. Thanks to the University both residents and students have gained knowledge to shape their lives, have experienced drama, music and oratory and enjoyed intercollegiate athletic events. IVlany students are Cape residents who have grown up with- in earshot of Academic's chimes, but most are newcomers. To- gether they make up the greatest economic force in Cape Girardeau by annually pouring over nine million dollars into the town's financial bloodstream. Thus, though the school re- mains largely taken for granted by townspeople, Cape might well be lost without its beacon light on the hill.
