After a day of classes, studying for tests, and vvrit- ing papers, an afternoon intramural game was often sought as a means of relaxation and relieving frus- trations. Exercising muscles and vocal chords pro- vided participants vvith a sense of belonging as well as a means of letting off steam. Not all students were fortunate enough to take part in activities and games after classes but rather took part in the working vvorld, earning money for tuition or rent or just getting by. Friday the 13th means double trouble forfall After receiving grade cards over Christmas break, many stu- dents blamed the fall semester's outcome on bad luck and un- avoidable misfortune. What else could be expected from a se- mester during which Friday the Thirteenth struck twice? The first-ill-fated Friday was in September, and doom and gloom saturated Cape Girardeau. Rain increased from a slight drizzle to torrents ruining any plans of afternoon social events and making it essential to have flood insurance for between- class hikes from L.A. to Ed. Psych. Dr. Scully's successor as head of the University became pub- lic knowledge that thirteenth day of September. When the Ar- row printed the Board of Regents' announcement of Dr. Robert E. Leestamper as the future president, it scooped the media in town. lt was a stroke of good luck for the Arrow but for local editors and broadcasters a reason to curse the calendar. The Friday before any finals week marks the beginning of last minute studying and praying over three months of class notes -truly a time of despair. Howappropriate that this mourn- ful day was the fall semester's second Friday the Thirteenth. Again nature supplied the proper ominous atmosphere by darkening the area with a partial eclipse. The solar eclipse made the darkness of the morning last until after 8 a.m. Ex- tended darkness combined with the threat of finals kept many heads under the covers that day. Geminid Swarm, a meteor shower, appeared that night. The bursting lights began after dark and ended around midnight though a cloud cover in Cape kept them from being clearly viewed. With that dramatic touch the second day of bad luck and fickle fate's trickery came to an end.
