H1873-Those Were the Days-1973 Saturday was the day that the rains came down. GONE was the big show of any Homecoming weekend-the parade. Washed away were hours of float-building and hundreds of dollars in float materials. Dampened were the spirits of band members who had endured early morning bus rides from all over the SEMO area. Despite parade cancellation, judges huddled under umbrellas in Capaha Park to determine the float winners. Class A winners included the first place Alpha Delta Pi-Sigma Chi float: Beat Your Feet on Normal Street labovel, and the second place float was built by Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon flower rlghtl. Dearmont-Myers claimed the third place prize for H1873-1973-Yesterday Once More, tp. 4135. These honors were made public at the game with trophies presented by Homecoming Steering Committee members. figs Si . 16 Cert! M al In November, a re-creation of century-old clothing styles and traditions occurred on SEMO's campus. Through the efforts of the University Choir and Golden Eagles Band a halftime show was performed which was reminiscent of days gone by. Centennial ac- tivities continued into December with a special program com- memorating the hundredth anniversary of the first day of classes at Southeast Missouri Normal School. The keynote speaker for the occasion was Dr. John H. Fischer, president of the Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City. Rather than dwelling on past achievements, Dr. Fischer considered current problems in higher education in respect to teacher education.
