The University has served the people of this area Wellu Its CHYGCUOI1 11964115 to be constantly re-examined, its goals re-evaluated, and the methods for achieving them re -considered by all those who love it and who attenipt to serve it in order that it may stay on course., Its primary responsibility for the past one hundred years has been that of furnishing the opportunity for higher education to all who need it and especially to those who have little of this World's goods with which to pay for it., The temptation to rnake all students pay for educational services has always been in the minds of a segment of our population. This threat is again rearing its head and all of us need to be on guard to beat it back., I trust that each of you Will do his best to see to it that public education continues to be public. It Won't be unless those with ability to learn but limited means, as Well as those with plenty, have access without future financial burdens., I congratulate you on the opportunity to serve. Very sincerely, Mark Scully President Cent

They have not perished-no! Kind words, remembered voices once so sweet, Smiles, radiant long ago, and features, the great souI's apparent seat. Fleminiscence: a mingling of common emotions, of fleeting moments recaptured, but ones that lapse into fleeting recollec- tions. Expansion and maturation of the self reduced to one sliver of the whole being, each person a universe within the un- iverse-each the filter for his course of life. A memory may snatch and snag at familiar harbors, old ports of recognition. Reflec- tions-those intangible components of the individual-gather and cloud the mind, veiling it in the security of sentiment. ,aid-6 N '. All shall come back, each tie of pure affection shall be knit again, The past: The Past William Cullen Bryant's nostalgic summation of mortality. What power breathes through yesterday to regenerate today and chart tomorrow? Like the silent touch of an unseen hand, the past gropes through the relics of ex- perience, searching for unity among kin- dred spirits. The Centennial, launched by the reunion of the alumni, blends the changes wrought in each and all to spice the savor of reminiscence-to gain perspective, at the juncture of a hundred years over the past, through the present, and toward the future.
