Prize Winners M The 1923 Summer Sami H 3.1 Splendid educational and recreational opportunities were open to all those who at- tended the summer session of the Southeast Missouri State Teachers College during the summer of 1923. For more than half a century the school has been an educational center but the passing summer has been one of unusual progressiveness in promoting social edu- cation, while the campus and grounds consisting of one-hundred-eighty acres on a high ridge overlooking the Mississippi River and skirted in the rear by deep, wooded ravines, studded with rugged rocks adds a feature of picturesqueness that is more than restful to those seeking recreation. One of the most popular features of the summer session was the News Letter published weekly. lt passed through its experimental stage in 1922 and there was such a demand for it in 192.5 that it now promises to be a permanent publication of ofticial announcements and of news items of general interest. Throughout the term excursions to nearby points of interest were conducted by various members of the faculty on Saturdays. Among the most interesting were those to Houckls Woods, one of the few remaining forests primeval of the vicinity of Cape Girardeaug to Cape Rock, a geological wonder, to the local Civil War fortifications, to the cement factory, one of the largest in the world, to the city water-works, to Miller's ice-cream factory, to St. Vincent's College, more than a century old, and to the Dome of Academic Hall from which a most magniticent view of the city, the surrounding country and forty miles of the Father of Waters was obtained. livery Saturday evening a wholesome diversion in the form of motion pictures, supplemented by the educational Fox News lfilmu was taken advantage of by large crowds who found the College Auditorium more convenient and comfortable than down- town theatres. Student Activity Tickets admitted to The Men of Zanzibar, Lights of the Desert, Rough Shodf' Elope if You Mustf' Spring Valley, and The Yoke of the Ages. For convenience, a Co-operative Store furnishing supplies, light lunches, and a variety of refreshments, at nominal cost was conducted in Academic Hall all summer. Two famous exhibits of great practical value were displayed for those interested in library and art work. The National Council of Teachers of English High School Library Exhibit went directly from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College to Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. A very fine art exhibit representing a year's work in Art at the University of Chicago came immediately from the Western Arts Association lixhibit. Both presented rare opportunities and at the same time veri- fled the fact that our middle-western college offers advantages equivalent to some of the leading educational col.eges of the United States. The second week in june was unusually full and helpful for all who are busy with the varied problems of the rural school. lt was designated Community Leader's Weeku and every County Superintendent of the district was invited to attend as guests of the College, and special programs for Book Day, Health Day, Play Day, Community Day, and School and Community Day were given. Prominent local educators gave of their best to the programs, while Dr. Hieronymous, Community Adviser of the University of Illinois was present on 'Thursday and Friday and gave four addresses and held several conferences of great practical and inspirational value. Two very appropriate motion pictures- Spring Valley and The Yoke of Age lent variety to the week's program. .....42.... An organization showing the College's vital interest in Community Life was effected june 24. Thirty-five charter members of the Rural Community Circle elected Mr. Allan Hinchey, Director of Field and Extension VVork of the College, as their president, Miss Esther Knehans, Professor of Rural Education at the College, as their secretary, and Mr. Brand, Superintendent of Crawford County, as chairman of their By-Laws Committee. W. S. A. B., the College Radio Broadcasting Station, for the benefit of Southeast Missouri, broadcasted on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays, at 3:30 and at 9:00 P. M during the summer months. In the Out Door Theatre on the campus, june 18-19, the professional Coffer-Miller Players presented The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Gammer Gurton's Needle, an anonymous pre-Shakesperean comedy, and Androcles and the Lion by George Bernard Shaw, and proved themselves great favorites with the large college audiences. The student body was exceedingly fortunate in that President Serena secured many eminent educators for the summer. Mr. Villars, representing the American Red Cross, was present june 17, Dr. john Maddox, Superintendent of the St. Louis Schools gave three addresses, june 19-20, Dr. Ambrose L. Suhrie, head of the Cleveland, Ohio, School of Education, delivered four addresses and conducted two conferences june 26-28, Dr. Hieronymous of the University of Illinois gave a series of lectures during Community Week , and President P. P. Claxton of the University of Alabama, and for ten years United States Commissioner of Education, lectured july 9-10. - Lovers of music enjoyed two rare treats during the short, busy summer. The Cantata - Pan on a Summer's Day given by the VVomen's Glee Club under the direction of Mr. Brandt, with the interpretative dancing under the direction of Miss McGownd, july 20, and the appearance of Messrs. Gusikoff and Steindel of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, July 13,--were events to be long remembered. Although most of the clubs and societies had suspended their activities, the social life of the 1290 summer school students was not neglected. The Faculty Dames gave a reception in Clio Hall, june 20, to the wives of students attending the college. On the same evening the Methodist Student Organization entertained with a lawn party on the campus and the Christian Endeavor Society, with a garden party on Rev. C. H. Swift's lawn just off the campus. However, the crowning social event of the summer was the All-Student Party held on the campus, Friday evening, june 29. More than a thousand students attended. Twenty-five County groups presented a variety of stunts character- ized by originality and historic significance. 'l he Ste. Genevieve group won first prize with their La Gui Annie a French Folk Dance, the Reynolds County group, second prize with their presentation of The Hill Family of the Ozarks on its way to a picnic, and the Gasconade teachers, third place with their demonstration of the Pleasures of the Gasconadef' The winner of the first prize was permitted by the College to select the first County tree on the campus. The beautiful elm selected will probably be the social center for Ste. Genevieve people when in the future they visit their Alma Mater, as well as for future students loyal to their group at the annual All-Student Parties. The stunt program was preceded by a musicale by the College Orchestra and followed by delicious refreshments of cream and cake served from a number of stations located upon the terraces of the beautiful campus. Altogether the party was such a decided success that it is undoubtedly destined to become a peimanent feature of the summer session. Saturday morning at 7:45, july 14, 1923, Dr. and Mrs. Serena entertained Dean Douglass and wife, Miss C-illard, Dean of Women, and the degree-students with a breakfast at the Country Club where the beautiful view and exhilerating breeze of the Mississippi and the genial hospitality of the host and hostess made the morning the shortest and the most enjoyable of the summer for the seniors who leave the college August 3, with best wishes for its continued prosperity. ' The total enrollment for the 1923 summer term was 1290. Of these 142 received Regent's Certificates , 69, the 60-hour diploma, 16, the 90-hour diploma, and 19, the A. B. and B. S. degrees. Such a record is one of which the people of Southeast Missouri may well be proud. Views of the Town ..44... Ml Honor Societies L The Delta Delta Kappa and Alpha Phi Delta are honorary teachers' societies the object of which is to encourage and recognize high standards and attainments in the teaching profession. Once each year the Delta Delta Kappa selects the six men ranking highest in scholarship, craftsmanship and leadership to its membership.
