Much can be made of a man, if he can be caught young. O my life, have we not had seasons That only said, Live and rejoice? That asked not for causes and reasons, But made us all feeling and voice? When we went with the winds in their blowing, When Nature and we were peers, And we seerned to share in the flowing Of the inexhaustible years? Coach PAGE SIXTY-NINE Royal Tibi, Track W Richard Edmundson, Baseball Tom Van Meter, Tennis Ralph Ranney, Basketball Donald Black, Football 1, GRC Football Review The record of the 1920 football team is one of the best in the history of the Col- lege. Although the team suffered four defeats to one victory, it must be remembered that these defeats came at the hands of schools of much higher standing than the Teachers College. Then Westminster and Carbondale canceled their games, which robbed us of two more victories. The season started with only three letter men back from the year before. Around Q3 . , . T' , l if 1 'VIL' . Li' 1 V Xi l YK X 'xp l these three men Coach Courleux built the team which, with only three weeks of practice, he put up against the strong St. Louis U. team. Outweighed, inexperienced, playing their first game of the year away from home against a team with a reputa- tion, our team made a wonderful showing. They held the husky Billikens to three points, scored by a drop-kick, until the latter part of the third quarter. Weakened by the hard fight, the excessive heat and the weight of the St. Louis team, and not hav- ing any substitutes to send in, they allowed the Billikens to cross their goal line three times in the last twenty minutes of play. This game was virtually a victory for the Teachers College team, as it was the lowest score that any team from this school has ever held the St. Louis U. team to. The next game, with the Rolla School of Mines, was a repetition of the St. Louis game. After a hard trip, playing a much heavier and more experienced team, and on another hot day, the team lost by the score of 28-0. Shurtleff came here for the next game. With a crippled team, we had to be con- tent to take the small end of the 14-0 score. The game was played during the Southeast Missouri Teachers Meeting held here, and the team was disappointed not to have made a better showing before so many of the alumni. Then came the Springfield disaster. The strong Springfield team, with the aid of a few ringers, walked on our crippled team to the tune of 35-0. However, the con- ference oflicials awarded the game to C. G. S, T. C. because Springfield used ineligible players. ' McKendree, on Thanksgiving day, was the last chance the team had to save their reputation. And they did. In the first ten minutes of play Captain Ranney plunged over for the first score of the game. McKendree was unable to withstand the fierce attack, and we amassed a total of 61 points before the final whistle blew. The splendid showing of the team, composed as it was mostly of green material, was due greatly to the untiring efforts and hard work of Coach Courleux, who, with Assistant Coach Reed, made the team what it was. Van Meter, H. Bunch, Revelle, Meyers and McClain deserve special mention because of their faithful work as substi- tutes. PAGE SEVENTY-FIVE X f SAOAMCRC Basket Ball Revue Opening the 1921 basketball season with the brightest prospects the college has had in years, even the most exacting fan was pleased futickled to death would be the way it was ordinarily stated on the campusj with the teams marvelous record. With only two new men to be picked from last year's scrubs to be added to the three men of last year's varsity, Coach Courleux soon picked two men from the squad to play with the varsity, and good coaching, coupled with the inherent fighting qual- fl 4 QQ Xtlllelits I N' -9 , mfg KJ' 1 N bv, H I w ities of the men, produced the most victorious team the college has seen for some time. A word about the men who composed the varsity. R. G. Ranney tCapt.J-R. G. is a captain who is model to his men. An aggres- sive, fighting player, with a never say defeat slogan, he plays with a reckless abandon of self that peps up the other members of the team and oils the well- built team work until it works to perfection. Richard Edmundson-Eddy is a wall on defense and when on foreign courts his playing has been the subject of much favorable comment. Edwin Kiehne--Big Kiehne, the scoring demon made the All State second team. Being known for his illustrious work, he has been the object of the closest guarding, but nevertheless the big boy has been able to elude his fastest guard and to score from any position on the floor. Kiehne has been elected captain for the next year's team. Tom Van Meter-Tom, Big Kiehne's so-called running mate, has been called the fastest floor man the college has produced, and indeed, after seeing him play-now on one end of the court aiding the guards in preventing the opponents from scoring, and then a few seconds later passing the ball to Big Ed under the goal-no one would doubt the truth of this statement, but would probably add to it. Tim Dougherty-Tim's first year on the varsity has been the means of his ad- ding at least two stars to his crown-in two games that were won by us by two points he was the means of us getting those two points-scoring the winning goal in the first game against Rolla and in the extra five minutes of play against Drury. May Tim play many more games with the S. E. Mo. S. T. C. But the rest of the squad by a hair's Abredth missed the varsity proper-but only because of the hard work of these second string men was the college mentor able to develop the best in the varsityAand to them without honors and praise we wish the best of luck and expect to see some at least on our varsity next year. HAH, RAH, rah-rah-rah, RAH, RAH, rah-rah-rah. RAH, RAH, rah-rah-rah. Bentonsl Bentonsl Bentonsl Ship Ahoy I ' Ahoy! This is the good ship Benton. This ship is engaged in a trade that takes it into the balmy climate of the south, or to the more stormy weather of the near arctic. Sometimes the voyage lies within the tropical climes of the smiles of a. good timeg or it lies in the more temperate climes of the good-natured rivalry of the ses- sions of society: or it lies upon the high seas where the elements toss and rage and where the skill and seamanship of the crew are tested. This barque put forth this school year in the month of September 1920, under the guidance of as fine a corps of ofiicers as ever walked the deck of a ship of this kind. She shipped with a crew of twenty-seven men and eight officers, every man a tighter and fully equipped with the determination to make the semester trip a suc- cessful one and to increase the honors of the society. e Tho the sailing took the good ship and the hearty crew to the high seas, she was fortunate in having the best of sailing weather. There were few opportunities for the crew to show their skill and ability. The meetings of the society were inter- esting, but no outside opposition appeared upon the horizon to call forth the valor of the sailors in defending the title of the ship. No inter-society, oratorical contest or cloud obscured the pleasure of the voyage. On the return of the ship, at the mid-year elections, a new corps of officers, with the same crew and some additionals, manned the ship for a new cruise. This crew was determined more than ever to tind a way to try their skill and craftsmanship. Only a few days out, brought into view another barque upon the same sea. This was followed by another and upon the mast of each was the Hag of challenge to de- bate. True to the spirit of the crew, two contests took place at once. In these frays that followed in quick succession, the Benton lost some of her riggings but nobly forged ahead. When the smoke of battle had cleared away, it was found that the Benton was in as good shape and trim as at the first of the encounter. The ship immediately cleared decks and put forth in quest of opposition that would call forth the keenest rivalry. This they found in the form of another contest like the two just past. This was followed almost immediately by a contest of a more gusty nature, an oratorical contest. When the sun had rolled the clouds of these frays away and when an accounting of the year's work had taken place, it was found that the Benton had fared well and that the oiiicers and crew had galantly defended the barque against all opposition. The honors for the crew and oHicers were as many as the most worthy could expect. Ahoy! We are looking for other encounters. Sis-BOOM! Sis-BOOM! Sis-BOOM-rah! Bentons. Bentons. RAH! RAH! RAH!
