Spartan hopes were lowered when junior Glen Schafer start- ing end as a sophomore was restricted from play for the year by his doctor s orders. The Spartans with most of their pre-season aches and pains healed, opened the season against the toughest foe of their difficult schedule, Phillips, Texas. Phillips, Texas' defending class AA champion, defeated SE 45-O, the widest margin any team was to gain over the Spartans. Northwest Classen, at the time rated the state's num- ber one squad, was SE's second opponent. Although dropping a 34-O decision tothe Classenites hurt, the disaster af the game was the loss of senior co-captain Gary Schoolcraft by way ofa broken ankle. John Marshall, the Spartans' first conference rival, became a bright spot in the year when senior halfback Ronnie Millican scored three touchdowns to A second disaster occurred early in the next game against Edmond when the Spartans remaining co captain Millican suffered a broken ankle which sidelined him for the duration of the season With both of their leaders missing and underclassmen fill- ing in at vital positions the Spartans dropped the Edmond game l-4-O and followed with consecutive losses to Midwest City 34-13 and Putnam City 33-6. Center and co-captain Schoolcraft returned to action for the Pauls Valley tilt and led the Spartans to a 25-6 victory over the Panthers. His fine perform- ance in the game won him the Oklahoman and Times Lineman-of-the-Week award. SE's next contest proved a big disappointment when underdog U.S. Grant gained a I4-6 upset. Northeast, undefeated in state play, was SE's final foe, and the hard fighting Spartans provided a 6-O halftime lead for their homecoming crowd.
