His fairness in handling our problems, the friendly twinkle in his eye and his personal interest in each student has made him an important part of our school life. Our counselors act as our parents-away-from-home, pro- viding understanding and guidance. They also supervise enrollment and testing. This trio is always on the alert, ready to help Southeast students adjust their personal and school problems. Instru- mental in unlocking doors to a happy and well rounded school life are our beloved counselors. RICKI HANDY MRS MARY E BURDETTE English English gave us a foundation for correct oral and written expression and an apprecia- tion for literature. It was required through- out our six years at Southeast. Successful mastery of these English courses would in- deed provide us with the key to success in any field we could choose. We were able to choose Spanish for the first time this year. Not only did we learn to write and speak Spanish, but we gained a better understanding of our Spanish speak- ing neighbors to the South. The Spartan Shout, a bi-monthly publica- tion, was produced by the journalism class. This elective afforded valuable experience to students interested in newspaper work. Closely connected with this group was the annual class, the members of which had great fun producing this book. MRS. HAZEL CARSON English, Home Economics Wi Zezm MR- STEVE HOLLAND MR. EVERETT SEMRAD Debate and Social S ' ' ' MRS. MARY MCCA Social Studies tudxes Agriculture and Social Studies Lessons in Social Studies gave us not only a knowledge of historical events, but an un- derstanding of the peoples of the world, of their problems and their environment. In addi- tion to social studies, geography and Oklahoma history for junior high, there was American history for all juniors, and a world problems class was available for seniors only. One pro- ject of this class was a radio forum discussion of our American heritage. An agriculture class was taught for the first time this year. Students enrolled in general science, biol- ogy and chemistry had occasion for practical application when they participated in the school and City science fairs. In the spring a group of young scientists enjoyed a two-day trek through the Wichita Mountains. MR. EDGAR PETTY MRS. MARY E. Other courses in this department are metal and wood work, mechanical drawing and printing. Excellent craftsmanship is de- veloped in these well equipped shops. MR FRANK SNYDER MR FRED HOLLOWAY New art classes introduced this year were commercial art, leather and ceramics. Draw- ing, painting and crafts were continued. Stu- dents entered projects in the National Scholas- tic art contest and the Central State Art Festival. In physical education courses we had fun in team and individual sports. At least one year is required. Fair play and good sports- manship were stressed. MR. BILL FARMER MR. JAMES POWELL Ar' Head of Art Department MRS. EARLENE SIMON MR. Especially popular was the Griddle Club, a boys, food class. A father was overheard complaining that his boy should not be wasting time in drivers training classg that he could teach him to drive as well. Then, a few months later he changed his mind when he discovered that his son had learned a great deal about the me- chanism of a car and had been convinced that any breach of driving rules was a serious, fool- ish mistake. He also passed tests for his drivers' license. Mrs. Pat Dickinson is the friend of all Southeast students. As head of the school library, she is always ready to help a worried student find a last minute book report, a biography of Lincoln, or a treatise on the housing conditions in Timbuctoo. Clothing F d d f MR ROSS NICHOLS MRS- PAT DQCKINSON Miss KATHLEEN RILEY Drivers Training Librarian Spggch Participating in school plays and assemblies afforded practical application of speech courses in diction, public speaking and inter- pretation. A major production was the Christ- mas pageant, in which the speech de collaborated with the music department Comprising the instrumental music activi ties are the orchestra, marching band and concert band. Band members have enter- tained us at assemblies and games and also. taken honors at contests. The vocal music department's crowded calendar featured three main musical groups: I Harmonettes, Melody Masters and Melody, Misses. Recognized as one of the outstanding choral groups in the City, our choir has per- formed at civic and school functions. I ,-4nd gfelped afue 0602 p MRS. HELEN ARMSTRONG, Secretary to Principal Mrs. Armstrong has been Mr. Grady's right hand man for four years now. In addition to serving as his secretary, she keeps all school , , , . financial records, writes checks for payment of bills and assists in all matters of school routine. 70e?aandt44Z7 ww? MRS. BONNIE DRYDEN, office Although this was Mrs. Dryden's first year at Southeast, she has al- ready made a place for herself as a pleasant, helpful office worker. She assists in the details of school rou- tine, prepares bulletins and keeps records. We soon learned that alibis of dental appointments on Friday aft- ernoon didn't always excuse ab- sences and stories about car trouble didn't clear tardies. ,7w At times we have visualized our teachers outside of school furiously making out tests, grading papers and practicing writing F's with an extra flourish. But the pictures below belie our childish sup- positions. Seriously, our teachers were not only our instructors, but were also our advisers, friends and con- fidants. We are privileged to have been members of their classes. Donning Santa Claus hats, the faculty took on a festive air at the annual Christmas party in the YWCA's Venetian room. Here, Mrs. Simon and Miss Staley act polite while Mr. Condren makes a point to the notables at the head table. Mr. J. Shaw, what's the formula for making your hat stand up like that? A team that came on strong and won four of its last seven games, and played Class A champion, Seminole, to a standstill, for three quarters. In their first game, against Guthrie, the Spartans fought hard, but came out on the short end of a 20-7 score. The following week, the Spartans played well but didn't quite have the defense to hold the John Mar- shall Bears. The Bears scored late in the fourth quar- ter, and squeezed out the narrow 30-25 win. Having one touchdown called back, because of a penalty, and being a victim of some bad breaks, the Spartans fell before the Moore Lions 13-12.
