Personnel service aids school Mrs. Mabel Willis headed a staff of 24 workers this year to aid in the preparation of food for 2600 students. They made about 2000 meals a day. Patrolling the halls and restrooms and directing traffic were the duties of the security guards, Mrs. Ber- tha Conyac and Mr. Robert Rickey. Working long hours before and after school, the custodians, headed by Mr. Charles Knight, swept halls, cleaned restrooms, and kept the corridors clean. Security guards for this year were: Mrs. Bertha Conyac and Mr. Rob- ert Rickey. Physical education Strives for fitness An essential part of the total education program, physical education stressed a wide variety of activities in which approximately 620 boys and 650 girls participated. During the course of the year, boys took part in football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, softball, ten- nis, golf, track and field, and various recreational games. A well balanced coaching staff, consisting of Mr. Paul Andree, Mr. A. R. “Monk Edwards, Mr. Don Lamb, Athletic Director, Mr. Jack McCreery, and Mr. Marvin Vandeveer, kept the boys hustling and working to stay or get in top condition. The girls, on the other hand, participated in arch- ery, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, modern dance, softball, swimming, volleyball, and other activities to keep themselves trim and fit. Mrs. Marilyn Morris, new co-ordinator, headed the girls' staff this year. Other instructors included Mrs. Betty Fugit, Miss Janice Greene, and Mrs. Ruby Schraeder. Advanced classes Offered to students Advanced classes for those students showing ex- ceptional work and talent in English and Chemistry were opened to selected applicants. Recommenda- tions were also considered. This year the Advanced Placement English classes, offered to seniors and taught by Mrs. Marguerite Gran- dy, studied expository writing, poetry, and prose. Col- lege credit could be earned by scoring well on the A.P. test. Senior English honor classes, conducted by Mr. William Harrison, dealt with classics, tragedies, and composition. Junior and sophomore English honor classes were taught by Mr. Frank Jensen and Mrs. June Dirks. To get students to think on their own was one of their objectives. A. P. Chemistry students, under Mr. Floyd Bayer, participated in an advanced study of solids, gasses, and liquids. Senior Jack Shellito served as proctor in Honors Study Hall. His re- sponsibility was to keep order and to supervise the signing-in in the flexible scheduling program. 30 Students in A.P. English participate in discussion and group projects which are part of their Independent Study Program. Mr. f loyd Bayer instructs Advanced Chemistry students with lectures and demonstrations.
