Data processing study Introduced to students The Business Department introduced data pro- cessing for the first time this year to the Southeast students. Mr. John Zumalt taught the semester course. With the objective of teaching the student to develop his business capabilities for the benefit of himself and his society, the business teachers tried to prepare their students for the future that lies ahead. Mr. Grant Page's Business Law classes heard guest speakers including Judge Howard Cline, and went on field trips to the courthouse. Other business courses taught this year were Accounting, Bookkeeping, Business Arithmetic, Business Communications, Clerical Training, Intro- duction to Business, Notehand, Office Education, Salesmanship, Secretarial Training, Shorthand, and Typing. 25

History studies are diversified The variety of social achievements today and yesterday make it important for students to be informed about different governments and their procedures. Such was the objective of the Social Science Department this year. Seniors held elections for government posi- tions to achieve a better understanding of gov- ernment procedures. While the “politicians'' were at rest, the general functions and policies of our government were viewed and studied. The study of our past and the use of various teaching techniques provided the juniors with valuable material in the United States History course. More law and government recognition was brought out in various courses, including Eco- nomics, Humanities, International Relations, Psy- chology, and Russian History. Mr. lames Powell, B.S.E. Homemaking girls Study practical arts This year, as in others. Home Economics provided experience in all areas of homemkaking to meet the needs of the individual and family. Child Care, Foods, Home and Family Living, Housing and Home Furnish- ings, and Sewing were offered courses in this field. Skills such as tailoring garments and preparing ho- liday refreshments were acquired. The girls also learned the importance of the time management fac- tor, and how to select china, silverware, and glassware. A number of different speakers visited the home- making department, including Mrs. Eileen Odgen from the Kansas Gas and Electric Company. Both boys and girls participated in the Home and Family Living course. Each year there has been an in- crease in the number of boys enrolled. In the last two years there were only two boys enrolled in the course, but this year there were 22 male participants in Home and Family Living. Senior Becky Root gains valuable experience in cooking by prepar- ing quick breads. Senior Theresa Thimm works to complete her sewing project by measuring the accuracy of her pattern.
