A foreign language student makes use of the language lab. Foreign languages Emphasize culture “The fluent use of foreign language, under- standing of the country's literature and other as- pects of the culture was the goal of the Foreign Language Department, as described by Miss Dor- othy Reynolds, department head. A highlight of the year in the department was the trips to Europe over the Easter vacation. Sev- eral students and teachers gained valuable and better understandings of the culture of different countries, their people, and their language. For the first year, Spanish IV and V were taught as one unit by Miss Dorothy Reynolds. Also new to Southeast was German III which was taught by Mr. Marlin Schrag. Regular courses offered were five years of Spanish, four years of German, three years of French, and two years of Latin. Miss Constance Aitken, B.S., 8.A. Fine arts blend efforts, results Quality Street , a comedy was presented by the combined efforts of the Fine Arts Department. Mr. Howard Jacob's sculpture class and Mr. Don Weddle's advanced art class worked on stage scenery and sets, while Miss Ruth McCormick's students provided the actors. The Drama Department presented other produc- tions which included the junior play, the senior play, and Spoon River Anthology. In addition to the advanced art class, the other art courses included Drawing and Painting, Commercial Design, Sculpture, and Introduction to Art. Choralesque , a musical production, was per- formed April 9 and 10. Other presentations included student assemblies, performed by the vocal and instru- mental groups. Science individuals Question theories The objectives of the Science Department were to enable students to develop a questioning attitude to- wards science and to use skills acquired from the courses to find the solutions to the questions, accord- ing to Mr. Clinton Kaufman, department head. Science students this year had opportunities to explore the vast areas of science under the instruction of an experienced and proficient staff, coupled with well-equipped classrooms. Biology classes studied ecological relationships in their surrounding environments, while Physiology classes studied the anatomy of the human body. Chemistry and Physics students studied gases, liquids, and solids, and various forms of energy and masses. Botany students studied the biology of plants. Advanced Placement Chemistry was offered for the second consecutive year to those students who qualified. It was taught by a new instructor, Mr. Floyd Bayer. Mr. Fred Amen, M.S. Mr. Floyd Bayer, M.S.
