gym class variation from formal studies Calisthenics started off each period, as the boys per- formed rigorous exercises daily in the boys’ Physical Edu- cation Department. As a change from scholastic studies, boys participated in such sports as tennis, golf, softball, flag football, swimming, track, gymnastics, and wrestling. According to Coach Don Lamb, one of the main objec- tives of the Physical Education classes was to acquaint boys with various sports, so that they may gain knowledge in these different areas. Synchronized swimming was taught for the first time this year in some of the girls’ Physical Education classes. Soph- omore girls who had “A” and “B” grade averages were able to choose the sports they wished to participate in. This was the first year sophomores were granted this privilege, for- merly offered only to junior and senior girls. Various sports and activities included archery, tennis, golf, badminton, volleyball, swimming, life saving, modern dance, and trampoline. Archery is one of ihc many spons in which girls may participate in gym class. emh, honors groups offered by aptitude In order to meet the needs of students with exceptional problems and abilities. Southeast provided various level classes as in past years. With acceptance determined by ap- titude, these courses strove to allow special students to ad- vance at their own rates. A new room was provided for the Educable Mentally Handicapped (E.M.H.) classes which included a kitchen area, shop area, and a classroom. According to Mrs. Wilma Stanton, instructor, the purpose of the E.M.H. classes was to give the students an education that will prepare them to live independantly in the community. Advanced Placement classes were offered to students this year in English and Chemistry. The purpose of A.P. classes were to provide students with a more advanced study and to recieve varying hours of college credit, depending on the re- sults of a year-end test. Honors English was again offered to students on all three class levels. The courses were designed for more intensive study than regular classes, and students’ work was expected to have higher quality. An independant research group was formed in the senior class Government. The purpose was to give students an op- portunity to go into more intensive study on various Govern- ment related projects. Slu denis in E.M.H. classes draw their own designs and make rock pic lures out of colored pebbles for gifts. Seniors Jo Murray. Mark Anderson. Bob Frensley. and Peggy Bauer were among those involved in the independant research group from Government classes. Students participating in the study met in Mr. i eil Miller's chem- istry room due to space limitation. Parallels are drawn between West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet by sophomores Marcia Morton. Dosed Chard. Michael Litan. and Marcia Patrick. These students are in Mrs. June Dirk's Sophomore Honors Eng- lish class. 30
