Miss Gene Pepperkorn Deparlmcnt Coordinator Social (Refreshments) Scholarship Committee Mrs. Verna Buchanan Assembly Committee Mrs. Mary Wulfmeyer Social (Refreshments) future homemakers learn basic skills By learning various homemaking skills and the impor- tance of family relationships, students gained valuable knowledge in Home Economics classes. Courses in this department included Sewing, Foods, Child Care. Housing and Home Furnishings, and Home and Family Living. Besides skills such as tailoring garments and preparing holiday refreshments, girls learned the importance of time management, how to plan their wardrobes and coordinate accessories, and how to choose china, silverware, and glassware. April 19 was Hospitality Day at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Several Southeast students at- tended the conference which included a fashion show and tour through the food laboratories and research depart- ments of the University. Both boys and girls participated in the Home and Family Living courses, and they learned the importance of knowing themselves and creating healthy environments for their fu- ture families. pupils apply skills in industrial arts “To better understand industry” and to learn how to become a better buyer and consumer were the main objec- tives of the Industrial Arts Program, according to Mr. Ralph Schaude, department head. The Industrial Arts Department included various courses in mechanical drawing, pre-engineering, auto information, auto mechanics, drivers’ education, general metals, plastics, and woodworking. Numerous projects involved the design- ing of architecture and machine drawing, and constructing everything from tables and bookcases to stereo and televi- sion cabinets. In Auto Mechanics, students learned how to repair engine systems, transmissions, and brakes, and they then applied their knowledge by working on their own cars, after they had acquired the knowledge necessary in class. Students attended the class for two hours a day. which was taught by Mr. Bill Lantz. Junior Charles Stowel! concentrates on some plans in the pre-engineering class. gym class variation from formal studies Calisthenics started off each period, as the boys per- formed rigorous exercises daily in the boys’ Physical Edu- cation Department. As a change from scholastic studies, boys participated in such sports as tennis, golf, softball, flag football, swimming, track, gymnastics, and wrestling. According to Coach Don Lamb, one of the main objec- tives of the Physical Education classes was to acquaint boys with various sports, so that they may gain knowledge in these different areas. Synchronized swimming was taught for the first time this year in some of the girls’ Physical Education classes. Soph- omore girls who had “A” and “B” grade averages were able to choose the sports they wished to participate in. This was the first year sophomores were granted this privilege, for- merly offered only to junior and senior girls. Various sports and activities included archery, tennis, golf, badminton, volleyball, swimming, life saving, modern dance, and trampoline. Archery is one of ihc many spons in which girls may participate in gym class.
