Eight new rooms were added to the department, and the new faculty members included Mrs. Marsha Gladhart, Mr. Robert Williams, and Mrs. Leona Bare. Mrs. Mary Chambers also taught one class of sophomore English this year. Film Study was a new unit of study offered to five Eng- lish IV classes, taught by Mrs. Marguerite Grandy. Mrs. Sharon Thompson, and Mr. John Morton. According to Mrs. Grandy. the purpose of the film study was to help give the students an understanding of such things as filmmaking, camera technique, and coordinating sound with visual image. Courses included in the department were College Read- ing. English Composition, English Literature, Journalism I and II. and A. P. English. English II. Ill, and IV were of- fered on the basic and honor levels, and English was taught in the E.M.H. classes by Mrs. Wilma Stanton. The Reading Laboratory provides students a chance to improve their read- ing time and comprehension. 18

teachers involved in diverse hobbies LEFT. Ain’t you gonna haul no wood to Augusta? is Miss Ruth Mc- Cormick's opening line to Mr. Arnold Slang in the production of Tobac- co Road . During the past summer. Miss McCormick, drama teacher, performed in summer stock at the Houghton Lake Playhouse, in Hough- ton Lake. Michigan. This is the fourth year she has performed with this company and this year in her performance of Tobacco Road . Miss McCormick portrayed a hillbilly in Georgia. Miss McCormick also per- formed in Black Spirit during her stay at Houghton Lake. Besides act- ing in summer stock. Miss McCormick has performed with the Wichita Community Theater Her last performance with this group was January. 1968. where she protrayed the mother. Mrs. Banks, in Barefoot in the Park . ABOVE. Mr. Neil Miller. Advanced Placement Chemistry teacher, instructs students concerning their lab write-ups and experiments. Mr. Miller attended the National Science Foundation Institute for A.P. Chemistry Teachers during the past summer at Hope College in Holland. Michigan. In the program, which tasted for eight weeks, teachers from 35 states exchanged ideas on teaching A.P. Chemis- try. Each week, a nationally known speak- er talked to the teachers on one phase of chemistry. BELOW. Mrs. Jerri Hummel, social studies teacher, performed with the Southeast orchestra October 17. Mrs. Hummel played a solo in the Telemann Concerto for viola. Having played the vio- la since the age of fifteen, she has studied with Walter Tram pier in New York and has also studied Chamber Music with the Julhard String Quartet and Fine Arts Quartet. Mrs. Hummel performs with the Wichita Symphony. 17
