I ! Mrs. Marguerite Grandy. Miss Sharon Thompson, and Mr. John Morion attended the Fordham West Coast Film Conference at Los Angeles August 12-16. Preparing for the new film study course included in five English IV classes this year, they watched and discussed many films and attended lectures. The new course was begun to develop awareness in film- viewing. because the average student has spent 15.000 hours in film- viewing. and only 10.800 hours in school, by the time he graduates, according to Mrs. Thompson. For the second consecutive year. Mrs. Helen Hageman. French teacher, supervised a student trip to Europe in the summer. The three students from Southeast who went were seniors Linda Calf. Jo Anne Moser, and Bob Frensley. Trawling seven weeks, they went to Rome. Geneva, and wrious pans of France. The purpose of the trip, according to Mrs. Hageman. was to acquaint the students with another culture . In the picture, to the right. Mrs. Hageman. the second person from the left, is standing between Dr. and Mrs. l.e Francois, the mayor of Villard de Lans. France. JoAnne is the fifth person from the left, and Linda and Bob are standing on the far right end. Mr. E. Thayne Tolle attended a Music Literature Symposium, sponsored by the National Defense Education Act. at Kansas University for eight weeks last summer. The twenty-five adults from eight Midwestern stales inwlved in the symposium sought more effective ways to teach music literature at the high school level. Mr. Tolle is also state chairman of the Kansas Chapter oj Young Audiences, a national organization which presents about 200 informal audience participation concerts by professional music ensembles to fourth, fifth and sixth graders. 16

The outer room of the Guidance Center is a familiar scene to many Southeast students. counselors advise students’ choices The Guidance Center was enlarged this year as it included a conference and testing room, a new office and a room which was used for student tutoring. An additional counselor was also added to the guidance staff, which brought the number of counselors to five. Mr. Corwin Bare, head of the department, was concerned with the problems of students choosing a college or a vocation. Counseling the class of 1969 since it entered Southeast as sophomores, Mr. Richard Elving was now concerned with the problems of seniors. Mrs. June Turner was the counselor for juniors with last names beginning with A through N. The new counselor at Southeast this year was Mr. Kenneth Clark, a former Social Studies teacher at Robinson Junior High School. He worked with sophomores and juniors whose last names begin with O through Z. Miss Fanny Thompson counseled the sophomores whose last names begin with the letters A through N. 15

teachers involved in diverse hobbies LEFT. Ain’t you gonna haul no wood to Augusta? is Miss Ruth Mc- Cormick's opening line to Mr. Arnold Slang in the production of Tobac- co Road . During the past summer. Miss McCormick, drama teacher, performed in summer stock at the Houghton Lake Playhouse, in Hough- ton Lake. Michigan. This is the fourth year she has performed with this company and this year in her performance of Tobacco Road . Miss McCormick portrayed a hillbilly in Georgia. Miss McCormick also per- formed in Black Spirit during her stay at Houghton Lake. Besides act- ing in summer stock. Miss McCormick has performed with the Wichita Community Theater Her last performance with this group was January. 1968. where she protrayed the mother. Mrs. Banks, in Barefoot in the Park . ABOVE. Mr. Neil Miller. Advanced Placement Chemistry teacher, instructs students concerning their lab write-ups and experiments. Mr. Miller attended the National Science Foundation Institute for A.P. Chemistry Teachers during the past summer at Hope College in Holland. Michigan. In the program, which tasted for eight weeks, teachers from 35 states exchanged ideas on teaching A.P. Chemis- try. Each week, a nationally known speak- er talked to the teachers on one phase of chemistry. BELOW. Mrs. Jerri Hummel, social studies teacher, performed with the Southeast orchestra October 17. Mrs. Hummel played a solo in the Telemann Concerto for viola. Having played the vio- la since the age of fifteen, she has studied with Walter Tram pier in New York and has also studied Chamber Music with the Julhard String Quartet and Fine Arts Quartet. Mrs. Hummel performs with the Wichita Symphony. 17
