Victorious Debate Year; SE Wins Second In State During 1967 — 68 Southeast's debate team had its finest season, winning a total of thirty-four trophies, including the second place prize in state competition. Southeast won more honors than any other school in Kansas in the debate field, adding more incentive for the already successful Southeast squad. Southeast debaters, coached by Mr. Bill Robinson, attended tournaments in all areas in Kansas each weekend during first semester. In October they hosted their own tournament, a cross-examination contest, with sixty teams participating. Resolved: That Congress should establish uniform regulations to control criminal investigation proce- dures.” Under this topic, the affirmative debate team had to present a code or plan regulating police proce- dure when investigating suspected criminals that would work better than the Supreme Court which con- trols criminal investigation procedure laws. Representatives to 1967 SunHosver Boys' and Girls' State were. LEFT TO RIGHT: Steve Tippin. Louis Stekoll. Jim Peterson. Jan Chandler. Marvin Lee. John Morse. Marc Salle, and Joe Coulter. Kathy Hines, senior, won the Southeast Betty ('rocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award by scoring highest on an aptitude and knowledge test. Representatives Attend Boys’ and Girls’ State Southeast was represented by seven senior boys in the 31st session of the American Legion Sunflower Boys’ State at Kansas University. Lawrence. Kansas. A B average, participation in extra-curricular activi- ties. good personality ratings, and teachers' recom- mendations were required of the participants. Jan Chandler, senior, was one of five girls from Wichita to attend Girls' State, also at Lawrence. She was chosen on the basis of personality and leadership qualities. Both Boys' and Girls' State taught the operations of democratic government on the national, state and city levels. Local civic organizations, individuals, or churches sponsored each student to the seven day session in June. Senior Kathy Hines was named Southeast's 1968 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow by scoring highest on a written knowledge and aptitude test given to interested senior girls December 5. She won a spe- cially designed silver charm and became eligible for the state and national Homemaker contests. 27
