Seniors Take Honors In Council and Merit Tests Jan Hornberger and Ann Poppe. seniors, were rec- ognized as two of Kansas' five winners in the awards competition of the National Council of Teachers of English. John Landis, also a senior, was one of the five state runners-up. Each of the students took qualifying tests as juniors, which narrowed the number of contestants to five — the three winners. Gretchen Miller, and Anne Regier. After completing objective and subjective examina- tions. these students were entered as contestants and Jan. Ann. and John were honored. Eleven Southeast seniors were National Merit Semi- finalists this year. Jim Binkley. Dan Dishon. Jennifer Friesen. David Funk. Jan Hornberger. John Landis. Sharon Meaders. Gretchen Miller. Steve Morgan. John Peterson, and Kathy Pruessner took the Merit Test in February. 1967. and each attained a score of at least 143 of the possible 160 points. Twenty-seven letters of Commendation were award- ed to students who scored between 134 and 142. Seniors Jan Hornberger. John Landis, and Ann Poppe discuss the NCTE awards. Mrs. Frances Wagner head- ed a staff of twelve cooks. They prepared lunch for the population of Southeast, and hired students to aid in the many necessary operations of the cafeteria. In addition to a free lunch, the students received pay- ment. Speeding the work of keeping Southeast spotless, a bright orange Minute Misers delivery cart was uti- lized by Mr. Charles Knight, who directed eight custo- dians and a matron. Representatives to 1967 SunHosver Boys' and Girls' State were. LEFT TO RIGHT: Steve Tippin. Louis Stekoll. Jim Peterson. Jan Chandler. Marvin Lee. John Morse. Marc Salle, and Joe Coulter. Kathy Hines, senior, won the Southeast Betty ('rocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award by scoring highest on an aptitude and knowledge test. Representatives Attend Boys’ and Girls’ State Southeast was represented by seven senior boys in the 31st session of the American Legion Sunflower Boys’ State at Kansas University. Lawrence. Kansas. A B average, participation in extra-curricular activi- ties. good personality ratings, and teachers' recom- mendations were required of the participants. Jan Chandler, senior, was one of five girls from Wichita to attend Girls' State, also at Lawrence. She was chosen on the basis of personality and leadership qualities. Both Boys' and Girls' State taught the operations of democratic government on the national, state and city levels. Local civic organizations, individuals, or churches sponsored each student to the seven day session in June. Senior Kathy Hines was named Southeast's 1968 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow by scoring highest on a written knowledge and aptitude test given to interested senior girls December 5. She won a spe- cially designed silver charm and became eligible for the state and national Homemaker contests. 27
