First Decade Establishes Traditions of Southeast After nearly three years of construction. Vollmcr and Sons put the finishing touches on Wichita High School Southeast in January, 1958. four months after classes began in the fall. Wichita Board of Education had Southeast designed after West High School by Architect Wendell Parks. The buildings are basically the same, but Southeast is larger. Built on a 2.151.800 square foot plot next to Curtis Junior High. Southeast cost about $3,000.000 completed. This fig- ure. however, does not include the green house added outside the botany room in 1959. Doors opened to 1,574 students in the fall of 1957 and closed that spring with 237 graduating seniors representing the first graduating class of Southcast-thc class of ’58. Most of the landscaping, handled by the Board of Educa- tion. was done at the time of building, with minor additions through the years. Two oak trees that now stand in the north yard of the school were given as a senior project. In the fall of 1965 picnic tables and benches were added in the courtyard. In ten short years. Southeast has established significant traditions and high academic standards. This year Southeast boasts of having more National Merit Finalists than any oth- er school in Wichita. Due to the recent school bond approval, it looks as though Southeast will continue its rapid growth and accomplish- ments. Its future is bright to light the way for higher stand- ards, meaningful traditions, and proud students on the move. Constructing the building was a primary step m the overall completion of the school The actual construction took approximately two and one-hall years 4

ACADEMICS Educational opportunities made available to the Southeast student have grown consid- erably during the past decade in the wider variety of courses offered, the high caliber of teachers employed, and the modern instruc- tional devices used. Academic growth is not only measured by material accomplishments, but also by the spirit of the student's quest for knowledge. Southeast students do not get an education, they take it, because they consider it a chal- lenge, not merely a grade. A Decade Of Knowledge
