Jan Hornbcrgcr. tumors, and Gordon Hodge, senior Shuffling through the multitude of reference cards which they have gathered for debates arc John Bowman, senior, and Grctchcn Miller, junior Win Class AA State Title ■Resolved: that the military assistance program of the United States should be limited to non-military assistance was this year's debate topic which took Southeast debators to 31 meets during the first semester debate season. At the 31 meets, debators won five first place; seven second place; one third place; and four fourth place trophies, which made a total of 17 trophies. This is more than any other school in the stale has received. Southeast was also the first school to w in the Elksclub's traveling first place trophy, which was won by junior Bob Lilon and senior John Bow- man. A school must win this tropin three times before they can keep it. Winning first place at the District meet at Southwestern College in Winfield. Kans. were Jan Hornberger, junior and Gordon Hodge, senior on the affirmative; and John Bow man, senior and Gretchen Miller, junior, on the negative. This team represented Southeast at the final Kansas State Debate Tournament at Wichita State University. Winning this meet enabled Southeast to finish the season in first place. Second semester was the forensic season which included five catagories. These were extemporanious speaking, whose topic was Foreign Affairs, oratorv. informative, prose read- ing. and poctrv reading. 27

Mary Pierce Orchestra, Band Perform For Concerts And Games Southeast's marching band did exactly that-marched, at all the home football games during half-time and in the Wichita Christmas parade. It consists of 113 members who perform under the direction of .Mr. Thaync Tolle. From the marching band. 90 members were chosen to form the symphonic band, which presented three formal concerts, four junior high concerts, and performed in the State Music Festival. Another group of band students formed the 3rd hour band. Both were directed by Mr. Tolle. Participating in four concerts and accompanying the ma- jor stage productions were the main activities of the orches- tra. Outside Southeast the orchestra presented five concerts at junior highs, participated in the State Music Festival, and went to Colorado Springs. Colorado for the National Music Educators conference. Mr. Tolle directed the 70 piece or- chestra. Ten instrumental ensembles were formed this year to parti- cipate in the Slate Music Festival and the City Ensemble Fes- tival.
