Students are also instructed in the care of related appliances such as the sewing machine and iron. Foods students are taught the preparation of a variety of dishes and are able to judge their own foods by sampling the finished product. Economic Education Observing the behavior of a rat m psychology class $ Southeast senior Joyce Aubert Human nature and the results of it have always fascinated man. Southeast students are no exception as many enrolled in social studies classes to better understand themselves and mankind as a whole. The social studies department started with six teachers in 1957 and has grown to twelve this year with four of the original ones still teaching. Team teaching began at Southeast in 1960 and has become increasingly effective through the years. It started with indi- vidual classes meeting together two or three days a week. Government, history, psychology, and humanities began us- ing the team teaching method in 1965. This method of teach- ing not only enables a maximum enrollment in a class, but also prepares students for similiar class conditions in college. Social study courses include economic education; govern- ment, required for seniors; international relations, an honors government class; modern European history; psychology; sociology; American history, required for juniors; world ge- ography; and world history. Class discussion and the exchange of personal opinions on issues arc main factors in the learning process in social studies classes. Sounds Of Construction Echo Through “H” Hall Practical skills and knowledge for a vocational future are offered to both boys and girls in the industrial arts depart- ment including such classes as auto information, auto me- chanics. driver education, electricity, general metals, me- chanical drawing, plastics, pre-engineering industrial arts, and woodworking. From these classes echoed the sounds of construction through H-hall. These sounds ranged from the pounding of metals to the scratching of pencils in mechanical drawing classes. Being able to work directly with cars and materials related to the course gives a purpose and sparked interest in classes. Auto mechanics has old cars to overhaul while driver educa- tion students practice driving 1967 cars. Designing actual buildings is a part of the drawing classes. Other vocational classes work with woods, metals, and plastics. Study, probably for the first time at Southeast, has been the main purpose of study hall, for this year a campaign was launched to stop sleeping during the study hall period.
