Art, Music, And Drama Develop Students Creativity Remembering “A” for Art led many students to A-hall and the fine arts department which includes courses in art. dra- ma. and music. Introduction to art. ceramics, sculpture, commercial art. drawing and painting, special art. drama, speech, various music classes, and humanities help develop skills in the arts and a pride in American culture. Periodieal music programs, plays and art exhibits brought recognition to the efforts and acheivements of students as well as enabling them to perform in front of an audience. They also served as entertainment for students and parents and built Southeast's reputation as having one of the best art departments in the city. Humanities, added to the fine arts curriculum in 1965, could actually be a department in itself, as it deals with histo- ry. literature, and the arts as man combined them during his development. The course is taught by a team of teachers who specialize in each of these areas. Mr. Howard A. Jacob. B.A..M.M. Humanities Department Coordinator Miss Jean langenheder. M.S. Modern Curriculum Enriches Language Program The Foreign Language Department, separated from the Language Arts Department this year, has doubled its classes and faculty members in the past decade. German has been added to the curriculum of Latin. French, and Spanish classes. Levels of languages, once limited to two or three, have expanded to make four lev- els available. Not only have more courses been made available, but now there are more classrooms and more students per class. All Spanish classes are in the Curtis building where a language laboratory is used. All languages have accented on the modern approach to teaching. This has led to the audiolingual method of teaching which called for the installation of the language laboratory in I960. The countries' cultures as well as their languages arc brought into the classroom by films, slides, and the teachers' personal knowledge. Teachers keep their knowledge timely by making frequent trips to Europe with the Foreign Language League. Pcacticmq her recorder before an ensemble performance is Mrs Erica Barron. Science Classes Use Modern Laboratory Equipment Science department offers students a wide variety of courses to challenge his skills and scientific curiosity. These courses are astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, geology, physics, and physiology. Next year a semester course of acronatuics will be added. The main change that has taken place in the science de- partment through the years has been the increasing up- to-date equipment installed. New equipment added to specific courses includes more powerful microscopes for biology class- es. mercury vapor vacuum pumps in chemistry rooms, addi- tional impscopes for physiology classes, and overhead projec- tors with visual teaching aids used by the entire department. In 1960 a greenhouse was built onto the botany room for the growth and study of plants. E-1 and E-5 were converted from regular classrooms into science rooms, one equipped with laboratory equipment and the other used as a lecture hall. Two new teachers have been added to the department to make a total of seven this year. Th esc and other facilities have kept science laboratories and courses up-to-date and interesting to students.
