The 1981 TALON captures the es- sence ofthe school year, giving everyone some- thing that they can call their own. When looking through these pages, do not merely look at pic- tures and words, but try to once again experi- ence the spirit that made the pictured events a liv- ing part of every person who passed through these halls. The people and their involvement at Southeast help to make our school a cut above the rest. 2 HAPPINESS BEGINS AT 3:15 .1 ......--3 N 3 CONTENTS Dedication 7 Activities 10 Athletics 46 l- People 76 Ads 170 Closing 195 I EVERYDNE GAVE THEIR SHARE E X 1 111li I ,. . ., f gi!!! During the course of the school year, many people have helped Southeast stand out from the rest. These people have come from many direc- tions to provide us with a sense of pride in their own way. From academics to ath- letics, the students have won honor after honor. Not only did Southeast have a Morehead Finalist, but we also had sev- eral National Merit Finalists and National Achievement Finalists. In the Music depart- ment, the band won several superior ratings and four members were chosen for the All-State Band. The many dif- ferent clubs provided services that benefited the school as well as the surrounding com- munity. The athletic program provided students who ex- celled in sports to put Southeast on top in yet another way. The teams exemplified the idea of team work but still produced many outstanding individuals that were recognized as All- Conference players. Even though these many people ex- celled in different areas, they blended together and helped create a unique atmosphere which made Southeast stand out above the rest. 5 THE KEY TO SUCCESS IS BELIEVING IN What one thing sets Southeast apart from any other school? lt's probably the determina- tion of its students to strive for perfection. Whether it is in taking an exam or winning the big football game, we have proved our ability to work for our goals and meet obstacles head on. And if we fail - well, it's only temporary. Besides, it is having tried that really counts. Maybe that's why Southeast is A Cut Above the rest. YOURSELF ., 6 Here at Southeast there is a woman whose skills are greatly appreciated but seldom recognized. Being ever present and ever willing in times of need, she devotes her time and energy to us, the students of Southeast. She works behind the scenes but her accomplishments are viewed throughout the school. It is with great pride that we dedicate the 1981 TALON to Marie H. Swaim. O Demetria Martin, Gina Durham, Bernadette Lee, Anita Fields, Marvette Artis, and Jermaine Edmonds participated in this year's Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Cotillion. The Cotillion is a formal affair which traditionally signifies young women who are ready to make their debut into society. Each year the AKA Chapter presents young women who have exhibited high standards of scholarship, leadership and service in and around the Greensboro community. Wendy Gearhart, Kelli Rhodes, Eileen O'Connell, Debbie Roberts and Paula Hill represented Southeast this year in the Greensboro Jr. Miss Pageant. Ot the twenty girls who participated, five were from Southeast. They were judged on their scholastic ability, talent, poise, and appearance. After dining in Greensboro's finer establishments, the couples showed up at the Village Green in trend-setting fashions. The Junior Class officers had emptied the treasury to cover their expenses, but it was well worth it. The Ballroom was arranged to provide the maximum dancing space. The tables were elegantly arranged with white tablecloths and a single red rose on each. Refreshments were provided by a catering service. Falcons moved to the groove of Windfall and the mood was set. All kindsof male-female relationships, varying from Sparks of love to 'lCrash and Burn, resulted - 'cause the falcons are Too Hot to Trot! Homecoming 1980 Fun For All Q . 'ki'3Z iSl, f 2 38 v 71' of The week of October 24 was long awaited by all of Southeast as Homecoming 1980 ap- proached. The cheerleaders stimulated the Falcon spirit by sponsoring spirit days throughout the week and selling corsages during lunch. After weeks of preparation by the Student Council, the annual Homecomingractivities were held in the auditorium during fifth and sixth periods on Friday. Activities included class competition in such grueling events as the wheelbarrow race, Mello-Yellow chugging, and the izzy-dizzy bat spin. The Junior class took an early lead, but the tables turned as the last event, the prune in the flour contest, left faces whitened trying to find the bu riedprune in a mound of flour. The festivities continued that night with the presentation of the Homecoming Court at half-time of the game. Afterwards, Falcon fans shagged through the wee hours of the evening with the unique sounds of Hip Pocket. With the night at its end, it was the common feeling of all that Homecoming 1980 would not soon be forgotten. 4' , 1 . . if L2 P' fwaff , 4 -J I ,, ' ' ll, Y Q g-w1Z41f:,,'4 ' , f f nf' ,- ' rf 5- a . , W ' ' Q, 6 1 ' 1 was + , E ,wr .gflgb 35, 1 1, 2, -gf gf- ww- ' ' '?K,,f ,Ag 71 iffy 53. tfjguiufyf I, ' , ' -' fri .J .'.s',':+' . The track team placed 5th in the Conference meet and the boys' team set a new school and conference record in the 1600 meter relay. The excitement did not stop there, for both the girls and boys set new school records in various events. New record holders included Newsome, Burchette, Cheek, Davis, Brandon, and Osborne for the boys' team and McKay, Finger, and Wilson for the girls' team. We congratulate our fabulous Fleet-Footed Falcons for an outstanding season in track. as 3 ,wg 1, V ' 7 94 ' .. . i rx ' , fi' . The Lady Falcons had an outstanding season this past year. The team tied with Reidsville for second place in the conference with a 13-5 record. During the playoff against Reidsville, Southeast lost 2-1 in the seventh inning and lost the right to play in the state championship. CLASS OFFICERS SENIDR When the class of 1981 took over seniority, things really began to change. The year began with a strange symptom only the seniors could ex- press - SENlORlTlS! This so called plague was a feeling of success that could not compare with any other. The class of '81 will go on with much pride and determination as we travel a path which we may never pass again. The past twelve years have memories that we shall cherish forever. The success of our efforts, that we struggled and strived for were reached as the seniors of '81 walked down the aisle of the Greensboro Coliseum and received their diplomas. There were both feel- ings of sorrow and happiness as the seniors of '81 prepared to go their own ways to meet the future. Ki ' it xx fi N . xixqwx M S Q S ' X l , 1' . x j f . aft? Pres. Vice Pres. s ii x What can you say about Sophomores? To many of the upperclassmen the answer is Not Much . However, now that they have stepped through the looking glass into the real world of Senior High School, the Sophomore class has proved it has the ability and enthusiasm to cope with their new surroundings. Of course, the goings have been rough and there are many obstacles yet to be faced. Nonetheless, eagerness of the Sophomore class to meet new challenges has shown they are capable of keeping that Falcon spirit alive in the years to come.
