O Xl' .Koo V Q9 The Seniors and Juniors forgot their hostilities towards one another and gathered at the Royal Villa for the last big event of the '78-'79 school year. The Prom, given by the Juniors in honor of the Senior class, was a tremendous success. The theme of Stairway to Heaven provided encouragement for the Seniors facing graduation, as well as providing a chance to reflect on their years at Southeast. Dressed to impress, the Falcons stepped out to the beat of Vision. As the evening came to an end, the Senior class had proved once again that they were the Party Class of the '7O's. y--1 Stairway to Heaven -Jmmwc WMM .-1' 6 ya :WI 'IOS Fiddler On T l v U Q C ClCIDUUECJCIUUEJUIIIUUDUDEUDUDEUDUDDDDDUDDDDDDDDIIDCJUUUIDEIDCIUUDDDDDDEUDUDUDDDUDUUUUUCID E U E U 13 U 1:1 U 1:1 3 1 1 ' ' ' ' I 1 D El D S S th A 1 przng z zn e 11' 5 U a U lil ll Cl lj to yiyy tvyi 1 3 ytty 1 tyitt 1 I tttyyc iyyt 1 U D , : .- , , 1 D U a U a U 1:1 U El U Cl U El U 13 U a U 1:1 U EJ '3' 131 U El '3 13 U 13 U 1:1 9 E1 D EJ 5 13 Q 1:1 D U 13 U 13 E lil D U El U 13 Cl D U a lil as Z El U T ' H lt d 11 s G 1 d M - 1:1 U lt looks like another sellout crowd for the annual Mayday activities. em O ' escourle Y teve mn ' was Home GY Q Q day Queen I979. Q VX! ,O- , I!! Friday, Oct, I2 - lt was probably the most long-awaited day of the foot- ball season. After weeks of hard work by the Student Council, it finally arrived - Homecoming Day I979. Activities began the night before with a Bonfire-Pep Rally in the school's parking lot and continued the next day with the annual Homecoming Events, which pitted class against class in ' tug-of-war, baby bottle drinking, pie-eating, and other contests. Festivities continued during the game with the exhibition of class floats and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. The spirit of the students remained How Sweet if ig! high, and even after a depressing defeat by Northeast, Falcon fans poured into the gym to boogie on downto the sounds of Shakey Drake. Our Boys' Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, coached by Mr. Ron Rudd and Mr. Wendell Robertson, finished Runner-Up in the conference and came close to winning the championship. The teom was lead by Chuck Thomas, who was an All-Conference player. Outfielder Barry Andrews aided the team with three homeruns and Wade Stanfield, our third baseman, was also an All-Conference player. Our Lady Falcons also had an outstanding I979 season. Coached by Ms. Carolyn Stutts, they tied for second place in the conference. Leslie Reece, Pat Lackey, and Lisa Prillaman were All-Conference players. The I978-I979 season did not prove to be one of the most swinging times for the Falcon rackets. The boys team, coached by Mr. Hicks, did not win half of their matches although much of the individual competi- tion was extremely close. Miss Wilson's girls proved likewise, having one of those tantalizing seasons where things just didn't quite come together. However, the girls' team did compete in the first round of the district sectionals, but the boys' team, due to unfortunate circumstances, did not compete. Nevertheless, things do look promising for the future since several new players are expected, and with them the Falcons may once again become a significant influence in their conference. l3l DIFFERE T STROKES . . . The pre-season predictions for the Triad 3A Conference were released. Southeast was predicted to win only three games, but the team, coaches, and fans knew they could do better. The Falcons took to the practice field early in August. Play after play, and hour after hour, the Falcons practiced relentlessly. Finally, at the end of that first grueling month, the moment of truth came bearing the name of Jordan Matthews. The Falcons finished the season surpassing their predicted record. The Varsity team, handicapped by inju ries, finished in fourth place, winning five games and losing five games. Todd Apple, starting quarterback, suffered a fractured ankle, while Karl Hampton, one of his replacements, suffered a broken nose. Donnie Hooker, an end, also suffered a knee injury. The Junior Varsity team won two games, lost three games, and tied fourgames. Brian Dalton, starting quarterback, suffered a fractured thumb late in the season. Tailback Wilbert Artis suffered a broken ankle, but not before he managed to gain a high average in yards rushed per game. This year the Falcons had several outstanding players. l-lalfback Mark Newsome and Offensive Tackle Larry Putnam wereAll-Conference players. For the second consecutive year, Tony Sweeney, a Defensive Tackle, was an All-Conference player. The Southeast Falcon Varsity and Junior Varsity football teams proved again this year that they are an outstanding football organization. Their fans, without a doubt, can look forward to an even more exciting and entertaining ball club next year. Equally as impressive was the recognition the marching band received at the Tunstall High School Band Festival near Danville, Virginia. Instead of having to travel in one of the activity buses or taking individual vehicles, small groups could now go from place to place in convenience. Getting the van was no easy matter. It took plenty of cooperation from Mr, Cox and a lot of other people in the school. Approximately twelve clubs donated some of their hard-earned funds toward purchasing the van. Money from the candy sales and the school's general fund were also utilized. Thus, in many ways, getting the school van kept many activities cruising along. Mike, Caroline, Raymond, and Debbie are testing the school's new educational compute r. The Sioux Falls-Greensboro student ex- change, sponsored by Southeast and Western Guilford, involved thirty-two students and four advisors, Sixteen students were chosen to go from Southeast, and Mr. Girardi was the advi- sor for Southeast students, The students left Greensboro on January twenty-fifth and ar- rived in Sioux Falls on January twenty- seventh. They spent the week in the homes of their exchange partners in South Dakota and were involved in many activities such as tub- ing, snow skiing, ice skating, and snowmobil- ing, all which took place in the freezing out- of-doors. Other activities were swimming, visit- ing an art gallery, touring the city, playing wheelchair basketball with crippled children, and getting a fancy hairdo ata hair designing school. ' stein ml Movtn ma 1 Ol Sioux BUST'l The students left South Dakota February first and traveled through Minneapolis, stopping there to view a play entitled You Can't Take lt With You at the famous Gutthrey Theatre. The students experienced a new school atmosphere, temperatures that dipped down below zero, the differences between dialects, and how snow can be swept off of the sidewalks instead of shoveled. During April thirteenth through the eighteenth, students from South Dakota visited Greensboro. They enjoyed some southern hospitality, toured Greensboro, made a trip to the beach itouring the U.S.S. North Carolinal and experienced a pig picking along with some good ole swing your partner round 'n' round fun. Both trips were absolutely great and many friendships were made that will last forever, miles will never keep them apart. f 135 iw JAY WEATHERLY C1962-19807 Jay is gone, but our love for him will carry on. L i Cone fabrics have meant ease and comfort right from the start... since 1895, when Americans first started liv- ing in them. One of our early offerings was Cone deeptone denim. And soon we be- came the leading manufacturer of this popular fabric. Next came corduroy. Once the fabric of kings, it became a favorite among Americans of all ages. But Cone didn't stop there. ln fact, denim and corduroy are just two of the many fabrics that have won acclaim for Cone Mills in its 84-year history. Today, with 20 modern plants, Cone creates a whole line of quality fabrics for casualwear, sportswear, uniforms and career apparel. Fabrics for home decorating and sewing - even polyurethane foam - are now a part of the Cone family of products. The almost 13,000 employees of Cone Mills are proud of their part in creating the basic fabrics that are the backbone of American casual fashion . . . and proud of the satisfaction each fabric gives you.
