A graduate of Wachusett Regional High School in Holden, where he still resides with the joys of his life, his wife and two sons, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters in Educational Administration from Worcester State College. For the past ten years he has been our school's Student Council advisor. Of the many Council activities during his tenure as their leader, he is undoubtedly proudest of one of their most recent, the raising of well over 32,000.00 for the Boston Children's Hospital. In dedicating this yearbook to Mr. Larson, the yearbook staff recognizes his many years of outstanding teaching and his many contributions to the students of SHS. One of those students recently said, Mr. Larson has helped us to grow and mature. Aside from being a great teacher, he is a true friend who is always there whenever needed. ..,....,,,.....- ..- - Yfugf, E E gp 9 s V l i K ' . Originally from New York, Mrs. Morrill received her Bachelor of Science from Regis College and did graduate work at both Seton Hall and New York University. Her decision to pursue a career in education was largely family-oriented as both her mother and brother were teachers in New Jersey for many years. Married to Southbridge Town Councillor Dan Morrill for forty years, they have six children. After retirement. they are looking forward to traveling and visiting their children who live in different parts of the country. The SHS yearbook staff congratulates Mrs. Mornll on an outstanding and successful career and wishes her well on her retirement. Interviewed recently she said, 'il'll miss the students and l'll miss the people l've worked with through the years. But l'm really looking forward to retirement. l'm really excited about it. It not only represents one year at Southbndge High, but a whole year of worldwide events that affects us all. ln later years when you want to recall all of those cherished times, your yearbook will refresh your memory. We want you to feel that this yearbook is not just for the yearbook staff, but for you as an individual. All of our hard work and dedication was for one reason, to please you. We feel that every student at S.H.S. is extremely important not only as an individual, but also as a member of the student body. We would like to thank everyone who helped us to achieve our goal this year. Aimee Madison, Lynne Chamberland and Tammy Dupuis all did extensive work. We'd like to thank Studio One and Jennifer Roscoe for all of the superb pictures. We would like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Hapgood and Jennifer for their great ad section. We also feel that our many accomplishments are owed to Arnie Lohmann, our Hunter Publishing Co. representative. But most of all, we would like to thank Mr. Varin, for without him we could never have achieved our goal. We started out very shaky, but with his assistance we soon stood alone. 160 pages seemed almost impossible to fill but in actuality, they really flew by. As the Co-Editors of the 1983-1984 Milestone, we want you to enjoy and cherish this book, treasuring it for a lifetime. -'U1 J., ll--' ll mm Swwtc Jwwf 7 .- gf 3?'5vlf4l? if ,fri 's J 1: 'J' HC! , .law 'Mr' -0 , , . ,s,,, r W, ,We ,Rv , 942 . , Dv 4. -was X X1 2 4 4, , , 1 f x 1 nw . Even though we may not often ex- press our gratitude, we owe our many suc- cesses to her. Under her guidance, we grew into a unified class, from our memor- able Freshman 84,' to our much im- proved Junior Winter Carnival skit. Later that year, the Prom, Miss O'Connell orga- nized with the help of some very dedicated members of the class, turned out to be one of the most outstanding ever held at S.H.S. Most of all, we would like to thank Miss O'Connell for believing in our class. ' ' ' 71 This is the best track team I have ever coached , said Coach John Hoogasian, and apparently it was true. They compiled a 9 and 1 overall record and were 6 and 0 in the Conference to win that championship. The high point of the season came on May 5th as the Pioneers defeated Auburn for the first time in twelve years. The low point came on May 23rd as the team, riding the crest of seven consecutive wins, lost their only meet of the season to Black- stone. 72 f Ill V' 1. ' , . ea 'Win .iii it MX Our tracksters also did SHS proud in both of the District meets they qualified for, finishing in the top three in each meet. Among many strong performances were Ed Sottile's undefeated record in the 100 yard dash, while school records fell to Sean Gilliard, Jeff Cantara, Ismael Alicea and co- captain John Romero. Chosen to the Border Conference All-Star Squad were John Romero, Sean Gilliard, Dave Allard, Ismael Alicea, Joe Ramirez, Ed Sottile, Wilfred Sanchez, John Quevillon and Glenn Corbett. Front: Co-Captains John Trahan and John Romero. lst Row: Head Coach John Hoogasian, Lance Montign , John Quevillon, Joseph Ramirez, John Sohenuick, Ken Sellers and Assistant Coach David DiGregorio. 2nd Row: Jeff Cantara, Nevin Montig- ny, Richard Johnson, Todd Robida, Louis Perron, Dave Allard and Keith Bishop. 3rd Row: Michael Coumoyer, Alan Ams, Walter Riel, Scott Burden, James Bachand and Tom Vangel. 4th Row: Barry Latour, Gary Tata, Paul Lavallee, William Delage, Joe Auger, Enc Brousseau and John Cortez. 5th Row: Robert LaBarge, Mark Normandin, Ed Sottile, Tom Auclair, Glenn Cor- bitt and Gary Menard. 6th Row: Renaldo Bernadone, Sean Gil- liard, Ron Bachand, Willie Sanchez and Ismael Alicea. BRIGHT FUTURE FGR GIRLS TRACKSTERS After the team defeated Tantasqua 85-33 here at home, Coach Jill Leach, now in her fifth year as the head mentor said, The potential of the new girls is just tremendous! That optimism was evident throughout the entire season as several school records fell by the wayside. One of only two Seniors on the squad, Captain Carol Turner led the way by qualifying for the Districts in her specialty, the 880. Following her lead was Freshman Tina Young who broke the school's long jump record, placed third in the Districts in that event and was selected to the Border Conference All-Star Squad in both the long jump and 100 yard dash. Frosh Stephanie Polesnak broke the SHS record in the high jump while classmate Celeste Bellerose was a consistent point getter in the discus and shot put. Sophomores Michelle Caplette and Cheryl LeBel took firsts in the two mile and one mile runs respectively. Three year veteran and Junior Claudette Frechette was a frequent winner at the low hurdles. Coach Leachs' quote at the end of the season, This year formed a solid base for years to come. mr - A ix.f 9f 1,- Oz: 1. ....,.,.,..4 , ww . ,vw 1 ww :JJ gp.. I 1 ,,,. The 1983 Golf Team, under Coach Dennis Desroches, had the best season of any SHS golf team ever. Overall, they were 13 and 1, their only loss coming to non-conference foe Northbridge High School. They avenged that loss later in the year by turning the tables on the Rams. ln the Border Conference, their record was spotless at 8 and O. They were the Border Conference Champs for the second consecutive year, and the team also placed first in the Districts. Individually, team co-captain Bill Vasseur placed third in the Districts and thereby qualified for the State Tournament. Over- all they were 7 and 4, while in the Border Conference they finished at 6 and 4, good for third place. Coach Locontois early sea- son quote, This year's team is young but will be strong, was quite appropriate con- sidering their accomplishments. Two out- standing members of that young team were Soph Jennifer Gosk and Frosh Darlene Lamprey, both selected to the B.C. All-Star Team. Gosk was undefeated in her bracket of 3rd singles and had a sparkling overall record of 10 and 2. All of the team helped to produce a memorable season leaving high hopes for the next season. gr Nr! Led by co-captains Michelle LeBoeuf and Michel- le Poirier, the girls won only two games. both against North Brookfield. For the first time in many years, there wasn't a single Senior on the team and very few squad members with previous varsity experience. Another first was the lack of interest to field a junior varsity team. These factors weren't conducive to winning softball at SHS. A fine looking Fresh- man prospect on the team was Michelle Pyt- ko. Asked to comment on the season she said, l think that next year will be better. All of the starters are returning and incoming Freshmen will definitely help us. Coach Gosk's 1983 soccer team had a strong international flavor featuring two Laotians Vic and Sengmany Bounphasaysonh, two Greeks Athas Tsongalis and Alex Sarantopoulos and a German Stephan Glink. Add to these the improving Willie Sanchez and SHS had the makings of some offensive firepower. Co-Captains Kurt Lockwood and Terry Baker provided out- standing leadership by example, :while goalie Jim Alicea made up for his lack of experience with quick- ness and aggressiveness. A mid- season slump fa six game streak without a winl prevented the Pioneers from having the kind of season they had hoped for. The team was blessed with a super defense which caused many turnovers but an incon- sistent offense which sputtered in all but two of our 9 games. Regardless, Coach Manno applauded his squad at the end of the sea- son with the following quote. The team was very inexpenenced and that's why we were inconsistent. Our guys never gave up. lt's just too bad they came up at the short end of the score. Psyching our team for the game, the SHS cheer- leaders, majorettes and band put together their biggest, most exciting and best rally of the season. The cheer- leaders routine to Rick Springfield's Love is Alright brought the house down. In class competition, first place honors went to the Sophomores with three first place trophies fposters, skit and yellingl, while the Juniors took two first place awards. -10 iii wr DREAM STATES . . . aim .I is 1 .1 On May 20, 1983, the Junior-Senior Prom was hosted by the Class of 1984. lts theme was Just You and I and it was held at the Stur- bndge Sheraton Inn. A large turnout of both students and faculty and their spouses guaran- teed the prom's success. Due to the planning efforts of Junior Class Advisor Miss Anne O'Connell, her officers and committees, and the great sounds of the band Windsong , everyone had an enjoyable evening. The high- light of the night, traditional every year, was the crowning of the Senior Queen and her court. Selected Queen was Lynne Girouard while her court members were Laune Delvlarti- no, Debbie Girard, Andrea Pingeton and Lisa Tamborini. -fr Seated: Queen Lynne Girouard and escort. Margo Bonin, Mistress of Ceremonies, announced the many acts. while Directors William Condon and Dennis McManis showed their expertise in putting together and manag- ing the performers. Mr. John Libera should also be commended for his generous participation and guid- ance in the production of a very successful show. Some of the other participants shown on these pages were Linda Cadarette, Ken Gottleib, Erin Recore, Anthony Kowalewski, Ann Desrosier, Tammy Tervo and Debbie Coutu. ll7 L 8 I I Q. In the fall of 1983, the SHS Student Council hosted the Fall Conference of the Central District of the Massachusetts Asso- ciation of Student Councils. Over 200 stu- dent councilors from more than 35 Central Massachusetts schools attended and were treated to WBZ-TV Sports Director Bob Lobel as the conference's featured speaker. Although SHS hosted a similar confer- ence several years ago, most felt this one was bigger, better and more successful. A few of the more popular workshops held during the day-long affair were Breaking The Ice fMichelle Ledouxl, Body Lan- guage lJennifer Roscoe and Melissa Le- Blancl, and Spirit For Everyonew lMichel1e Girard and Karin Checkal. The moving forces in the Conference, all C.D.M.A.S.C. officers, were Mr. Jeffrey Larson, Gina Crance and Michelle Ledoux. I 4 mn- I H. ffm., P Q R. W ' Je X I Though SHS has had foreign exchange students in the past, it has never had three in one year as it did during the 1983-84 year. The three were Minna Virolainen ffrom Finlandi who stayed with Senior Cherly Lyon and her familyg Stefan Glink ffrom Germanyl who lived with the McLeod family: and Alex Sarantopoulos ffrom Germanyl who was the guest of Senior Aimee Madison and her family. None of the three had problems adjusting to the ideosyncracies of American life, and all were quickly and readily accepted into the mainstream of life at SHS. Stefan and Alex were both mainstays of the Pioneer soccer team - referred to by local newspapers as part of Coach Gosk's foreign connection. Minna, a tall, attractive, blond, was ever present at our athletic and social events. Her husky voice and easy-going manner made her a favorite of both girls and especially the Sl-IS male population. Early in her stay here she became truly 'iAmericanized by becoming addicted to junk food. As the end of the school year neared. all of their many friends dreaded the thought of their scheduled departures. XMAS CONCERT Southbridge High School Chorus Director William Condon and Band Director John Libera led their respective charges in our school's annual Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 21, 1983. Traditional holiday works were featured by the SHS Chorus, Select Chorus and the school's Jazz and Concert Bands. The large and appreciative audience, comprised of faculty, friends and relatives, applauded time and time again and left after the concert in a true seasonal frame of mind. Congratulations to the SHS Music Depart- ment on what has become a yearly and traditional crowd-pleaser!
