SP Sz YOUR MOVE by Yes Take a straight and stronger course, to the corner of your life. Make the white Queen run so fast, she hasn't got time to make you wise. Cause it's time, it's time in time with your time and its news, is captured for the Queen to use. Move me on to any black square, use me any time you want, just remember that the gold's for us all to capture, all we want, anywhere. Don't surround yourself with yourself, move on back two squares, send an instant comment to me, initial it with a loving care. Cause it's time, it's time in time with your time and its news is captured for the Queen to use. FQEIVE BER . . F363 U R The death of Arthur Girouard brought a sad mo- ment to his family and his many friends. These two pages of our Yearbook are in honor of a man who touched the lives of so many, in a kind and considerate YVI.l.Y. As caretaker of Dresser Street Field for many years, he was an inspiration to many young athletes, stepping up the plateaus from grammar school to junior high and high school. And later, when they went on to college, the armed forces or jobs in society, they al- ways came back to visit Art Girouard. They remem- bered him and he remembered them, as well. He took great pride in his work. To him, Dresser Field was his castle and domain. He always strived to keep it neat and tidy and his perserverance brought him praise and compliments from people who visited the field. Many a youngster will remember a scolding finger from Art, for playing ball where they were not supposed to. But his sternness was only a reflection of the moment. Minutes later, he would offer a word of praise or encouragement to the lad. And Art Girouard loved Southbridge High kids. His many photos and clippings, artfully adorning his office and press box walls, were put up because he wanted to do it. He was fiercely proud of the Red and White. And he showed no prejudice. just about everyone who took a step into Dresser Street Field got his or her picture taken by Arthur. The man was more than just a caretaker and friend to young and old. He was perhaps the truest South- bridge High rooter around. To him, SHS teams were the best, in victory or defeat. And when a Southbridge Pioneer football team came in after a bitter loss, it was Art Girouard's head that was bowed with the players. And we all knew his moods when we won, especially a victory over Bartlett. Art Girouard's infectious smile touched us all. He was a kind, considerate man. A friend to many and we will remember . . . 95 .,' llfl L' FY I -lr.-:F3'B5?fvg'.' -.... -- , s ,gwv-'15 -:A--I 'JL- .--.hp .1g-- ,j - 1-ff: tl- K . l 'fly '5 az 7 r f' if -, f Q' -1 1 Z xx Lxtxx. l .A' K rl 2'11l'a-f 'sy ' 1- , w. . -,n Ik v 17' 'X -L , -fs Star Tigre . . USO Il 1 ONLY JUST BEGU 'qwfm-s f fc.: lt was early evening on May Z5rd. The setting was the ballroom of the Sturbridge Sheraton. The 1930 junior-Seruor Prom was getting underway. The hrst of the couples were arriving as excitement filled the air Studio One took pictures of posed as well as unsuspecting couples all night. The sponsoring Class of 1981 stood back and proudly watched all their dreams and expectations come to life. The theme song - weve Only just Begun - was sung by former SHS student Mary Ellen Hayden accompanied by the jerry Seeco Band. The meaning ofthe words mesmerized the crowd and added that final touch of magic, It also served as the lst step to the moment everyone had been waiting for. lt was time ro choose the queen and her court. As the Senior girls marched around the dance floor, the band carefully weighed the possibilities and finally ended up with the best possible results. All in all, the 1980 junior-Senior Prom was a complete success, setting lasting high school memories for all who attended. Front. Queen julie Jarvis and L. Pena. Back: R. Messier, Dawna Mitchell, j. In order to get the players psyched, our cheerleaders put together their biggest and best rally of the year with poster, skit, color clay and yelling contests among many. This past year, first place honors were taken by the Seniors for their skit, by the Juniors for their posters and color day participation and by the Sophomores who won the yelling contest. 79 .. 3? Sommane was poor and because her family was suspected of Communism they were sent to three tails before being sent to a refugee camp. While in the camp, Sommane met an American who asked her if she would like to live in America. Her answer was .1 resounding Ye-s! Her name was added to a list for an American sponsor, Eight months later Sommane was on her way to the United States sponsored by Father Nally of the Notre Dame Parish. She was enrolled at Southbriclge High School and, gradually, she began to learn Enyish. Soon, she was attending regular classes and her English improved considerably. Sommane's courage and determination were an inspiration to all of us. The Pete 8: Dork Show Tony Pioppi and Cliff Drezek A new and innovative twist during the basketball season was offered by morning sportscasrers Pete Gazello and Dork Lemanski iTony Pioppi and Cliff Drezekj. The two were heard periodically over the intercom delivering dialogues attempting to arouse student enthusiasm for our evening basketball games, Their efforts were rewarded as attendance at our home basketball games seemed improved over previous year. Early in the year, the student body elected Senior Rick Courtemanche as our Student Government Day Representative, while junior Kent Parent was chosen as his alternate. The two journeyed to Boston in the spring with students from all over Massachusetts to run our state government for the day in the manner of our regular elected and appointed state officials, Profile In Courage Sommane Bounphasaisonh tudent Government Leaders Rick Courtemanche and Kent Part-nt sr ' 1 ' 3 i gf X i!.f-JC v ,-CQQQ f 1 if SOUTH BRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL 25 COLE AVENUE SOUTHBRIDGE. There is even a little apprehension in many, as we know. And this is even more dramatically demonstrated by frost students who are making the transition from the junior to the senior high school. There are many academic, social, and psychological adjustments to be made during this transition. The ease with which the right adjustments are permitted to be made must concern all of us. Recognizing this and realizing the increasing importance of the parent's role in the student's total success, we are pleased to announce the continuation of our special program for the parents of freshmen. We have scheduled an evening meeting on Tuesday, September 9, at seven o'clock i.n the cafeteria to provide you with as much information as possible about YOUR school and its programs. This information, we hope, will help you play a more effective role in your son's!daughter's success during hisfher high school career. In order to answer the many specific questions we hope you will have, Irembers of the administration, directors of special services, department heads, and teachers will be present. A tour of our new facilities is also planned for our meeti.ng. Please plan to join us. Your interest will be greatly appreciated. The chief beneficiary of our mutual interest and concern will be your son! daughter. Co dial fy, , 1 X QQ af QQ af Edward J.
