After last yeafs 9-0 season, there was a bit of mixed feeling on the outcome of this year's squad. But with seven returning starters the Pioneers posted a reputable 8-2 record. After an opening day victory over a strong North- bridge club and the addition of place kicker George Papoutsides from the soccer team, enthusiasm for another fine season started to permeate the minds of fans and coaches. Both Pioneer losses to Westfield and Keene tboth played for their respective division I championships last yearl were games in which the Pioneers were equally as strong physically, but made costly mistakes. Most of the success of the teams record can be attributed to the fine passing of Mark Palmerino and the fine catches of both Mike Morrill and Craig Walker. The Pioneer running game, unlike past sea- sons, was inconsistent. The Pioneers also had their share of injuries. joe Bonadies missed the first couple of games with a thigh injury. Rich Lopata injured his knee in the St. Peters game and Steve Kaitbenski dislocated his shoulder during the Auburn game. They were both lost for the season. With this season's 8-2 mark, Coach Don Marino, in his 20th season as head coach, boosted his over all record to 125-44-3. Wg? sg It appears the Pioneerettes Basket- ball squad is on their way to a first place in the Border Conference this season. So far, they boast an impres- sive 9-4 record and are 7-O in the Border Conference. Coach Theodoss sites their victory over arch rivals Bartlett Indians as the highlight of the season. He also noted their impres- sive vict0ry over North Brookfield. The Pioneerettes had not beaten them for the past two seasons. If the Pioneerettes continue as their present pace, a District lll birth is almost a guarantee. The Pioneerettes ended regular season play by sharing the Border Conference title with North Brookfield. The girls went on to the Dis- trict title game, knocking off top-seeded Algon- quin, 56-45, in the process. Despite Cindy Beaudreau's 30 points, the Pioneerettes fell to Ayer High 58-51 in the final. Special recogni- tion should be given to center Cindy Beaud- reau, who scored a total of 87 points taverage of 28 points per gamei, in the three District games. She finished the season only 64 points shy of the 1000 mark. The Pioneerettes turned in a season record of 16-6. , V .. f ri' uf '?:. efttrfgg fl . Wendte Best Wishes to the Seniors From the Class of 1983 'Q' v an if im ,, ,A -4, f C 4 'vm,,..,,- pm-of rx Ql ,.,4 '51- 'D W 'Mx f 159 We would like to extend our grati- tude to all the dedicated people that made our yearbook possible: our rep- resentative, Linda Miller, from Hunter Publishingp Mr. Desroches and Mr. Morley for their cooperation and assis- tance throughout the yearp the business coordinator, Mr. Welch, for his time and patience. Without the unending guidance and dedication of Miss Donna Reid, this yearbook would not be possible. We, as well as the staff, would like to extend our deepest ap- preciation to her. She took over the re- sponsibilities of advisor and shared this learning experience with the staff, help- ing an inexperienced but dedicated group to produce a reputable yearbook. The editors of this year's book have gut in much of their personal time and ave put many other obligations sec- ond. When crucial deadlines ap- proached, we could always rely on one another for assistance. As editors-in-chief, our experiences have varied greatly. We have learned to take criticism, realizing that it has been to help improve ourselves. As seniors, we realize that this is vital in order to succeed. We have begun to realize that life is an unending process of growths: we have taken our first steps in that awareness. We hope this yearbook will serve to bring that awareness to you.
