Coach Anthony Santilli was right when he stated that his team's underclassmen had gained valuable experience after last year's dis- appointing season. His team bounced back to a respectable 10 - 7 record, including key wins over the State Champs, Tantasqua, and the Rams of Shepherd Hill. Border Conference All-Stars Dino Tarquinio and Tony Santilli turned in outstanding performances in most of the Pioneer victories, including Tarquinio's shutout over the Rams, 1 - o. The return of steady catcher Jim Jalbert, and pitchers Mark LeB- lanc and Don Dashnaw should help continue their winning ways next season. Underclassmen Tony Fantaroni, Jim Bellerose, and Luis Pena should also contribute greatly. PIONFFRFTTFS SPEND AN UNUSUAL SEASON OF REBUILDING The 1977 Girls Varsity Softball Team spent the year rebuilding after the loss, one year earlier, of Senior standouts Sue Peters, Jan St. Laurent, Cheryl Caouette and Barbara Brousseau. Only one Senior, Captain Sherri Brousseau, returned to the squad, but the experience of Juniors Annette Rajchl and Pam Molina showed a promising future for Girl's Softball. The impressive play of Fresh- men Jo Lambert, Cindy Beaudreau and Kathy Laferiere gave Coach Leduc an optimistic outlook for the future. The highlights of the season were an impressive 5 - 0 win over Auburn which ruined their undefeated season, and the selection to the Border Conference All-Star Team of Captain Sherri Brousseau, Mona Kantorski, Judy Petro and Marcy Capistrand. AFTER A SLOVV START, THE RIONEERS VVON FOUR OF THEIR LAST FIVE Head Coach Don Marino's 17th season started on a dismal note, the Pioneers losing its first four games. The team, loaded with underclassmen on both its offensive and defensive units, righted itself at mid-season and finished off in spectacular style by winning four of its last five games, including a 30 - 12 Thanksgiving Day victory over Bartlett. Our team's strong finish, during what was supposed to be a rebuilding season, speaks well for the future of SHS football. Highlights of the season included a 13 - 12 victory over power- ful Wachusetts Regional, which seemed to be the turning point on the Pioneer's schedule, and a 17 - 0 shellacking of the Tan- tasqua Warriors. In the Tantasqua game, Tony Fantaroni won the Ted Farland Memorial Award as the game's outstanding com- petitor. p--J 45 xi? Tfrglffs S-,-2 wmv -2- A 0' -4 ILM .,5 . Senior Co-Captain Jim Jalbert was given the Vincent Sabatinelli Memo- rial Award as that game's MVP and the Patriot's Unsung Hero Award, two honors richly deserved. Only eleven Seniors capped their careers on Thanksgiving morning. VARSITY BASKETBALLERS SUFFERED THROUGH A DISAPPOINTING SEASGN Senior Co-Captains Neil Kirk and Mark LaCoste did their best to finish off their SHS basketball careers on a winning note, however, overall inexperience, inconsistency and a lack of bench strength doomed their team to an 8 and 10 record. Underclassmen showing signs of blossoming in the future were Junior Luis Pena and Sophomores Kevin Krupinski, Pete Holden and George Papoutsidis, the latter two being promoted from an outstanding Junior Varsity squad. Junior Varsity Coach James Kane led his squad to another satisfying season with a final record of 15 and 3, his second best as J.V. coach. The main characteristics of the squad were hustle and desire which turned several of their games into hard-earned victories. 89 A- -. . T l'H',w. .
