Understanding great pain and enduring lasting hardship while Riding with strength as your companion. Applying much faith in ma tters most tragic, then, Going towards recovery and reaching the unattainable goal. Eternally living . . . loving and loved forever. s$ Mr. Jeffrey Kokoszka Courage is to feel the daily dagger of relentless steel And keep on living. So it is with Mr. Kokoszka, a man, our teacher, who has had to face life and its misfortunes with great determination. The students of SHS are honored to dedicate MILESTONE ' 76 to the man who has taught us the true meaning of bravery. Don ' t you feel a change a coming drom another side of time, Breaking down the walls of silence lifting shadows from your mind, Placing back the missing mirrors that before you couldn ' t find, Filling mysteries of emptiness that yesterday left behind? And we all know it ' s better yesterday has past . . . . . . now let ' s start living for the day that ' s going to last. Don ' t you feel the day is coming that will stay and remain, When the children see the answers that you saw the same? In some way SHS has reached out and moved us all. It seems only yesterday, we were freshmen — a new class. And then, a reluctant last year . . . We know nothing will ever be the same. But we have a new day yet ahead, A start that is all our own. We learn from the memories we share, And the years together Shall help us become what we wish to be. The 1975 Southbridge High School Pioneerettes Softball Team holds a distinction no other SHS sports team can boast of. The Pioneerettes became the Massachusetts State Champions the first year such a tournament was held. Though SHS has had some great athletic teams in the past, none has ever achieved the status of State Champions. The Pioneerettes have, for many years, been the class of girls Softball in the state. During the past two seasons, our girls have won 43 consecutive games, a state record which will undoubtedly stand for many years. The 1975 season saw them winning 19 consecutive regular season games, the District III Championship in four games, and final- ly the State Championship against Apponequet Regional by the score of 9-8. They also easily captured the Border Conference Crown, truly a memorable season. 5 li State Champs 3TO -5 | I 1 7 -. « ?.. - • «■ « izyiy „ v V!VV GIRLS SOFTBALL RECORD SHS OPPONENTS 13 38 22 Douglas Sutton New Bedford 2 9 Oxford 6 12 Grafton 3 5 Bartlett 2 16 Auburn 12 17 5 28 12 7 Algonquin Shepherd Hill Bay Path Shrewsbury Bartlett 5 5 8 5 19 Marian 1 13 Auburn 3 1 1 1 6 2 6 Shepherd Hill Bay Path Tantasqua Leominster 3 8 3 2 DISTRICT III CHAMPIONSHIP 11 Leominster 2 8 Oxford 2 8 1 9 Lunenberg Chicopee Comp. St. John ' s H.S. Wachusett Reg. BARTLETT The 1975 Southbridge High season began with a 14-12 loss to the Clinton Gaels. SHS was favored and played well enough to win but were frustrated near the goal line once too often and lost, despite touchdowns by Stu Curboy and Dave Matte. The Algonquin game was a pleasant surprise for Pioneer coach Marino as our team stunned them 21 - 8. The team ' s offense was led by quarterback Scott Lazo who completed 7-13 passes including two TD tosses to split end Tony Santilli. Stu Cur- boy bulled over for the other score. The aroused defense refused to yield to a physically larger team, allowing only one TD. The Pioneers won three out of their next four games defeating Gardner 8 - 6, Shepherd Hill 34 - 8 and Athol 14 - 7 while losing a thriller to Auburn 13 - 12. The Tantasqua game was just around the corner. On paper these rivals seemed to be about equal. Tantasqua had both the size and speed to halt their losing streak to the Pioneers. But Southbridge showed the brand of hard-nosed football which had typified their playing to that point. The re- sult was Southbridge 14 and Tantasqua 0! It was the team ' s first shutout of the year. They allowed a total of 117 yards with only forty-two of them coming on the ground. Defensive linemen Doug Lazo, Paul DiGre- gorio, Keith Bigness, Dennis Grenke, Tom Gajewski and Tom Lees were superior all afternoon. The offense was sparked early in the game by Stu Curboy ' s 75 yard TD gal- lop, a feat which earned him the MVP after the game. After losing to St. John ' s, the Pioneers rebounded to top Wachusett Regional 38 - 6. They put together their best offensive show- ing of the season as Scott Lazo hit on 7 of 12 passes good for 103 yards, including four touchdown throws, two to Stu Curboy and two to Dave Matte. r 1ST ROW: W. Bartlett got off r to an early 6-0 lead in response to talk that the Indians had not l been providing enough competition. By halftime, Scott Lazo threw 2 for a touchdown, scored himself and handed off to Brian Iozzo who splashed in for yet another. The Indians played determined foot- y ball and were not eliminated until late in the game. Brian Iozzo received both the Vincent Sabatinelli and MVP awards for his L) inspiring play. a End Tony Santilli received recognition for his fine season by y being selected to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette Super All- Star Team. ■r-i .« The Junior Varsity team wound up their season with 3 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie as coaches Giroux and Welch expressed satisfaction with the way their team performed during the season. Pioneer Soccer The 1975 Soccer team, under Head Coach Walter Gosk, worked to a fine 10-6-2 record. Columbian Exchange Student Al Gavaria led all scorers with 13 goals and 6 assists, followed closely by another Senior, Dave Riel, who had 12 goals, 5 assists. The defense, headed by Kelly Tsongalis, Paul Blanchet and Ray Rivera, held their opponents to a 2.0 goal average per game. Hard-working underclassmen, such as Lee Standrowicz, Peter Vasolaridis, and Russ LeBlanc gained valuable experience. Though the sport was relatively new — to most of the players, the few experienced players set outstanding examples for the new comers. The girls ' coach, Mrs. Lorraine Gately, proved an excellent tutor and was undoubtedly the trigger to their success. The team topped off their first year record of 5-5-3 with an excellent 11-1-4 season in ' 75. The Pioneerettes overpowered sever- al of their opponents as seven shutouts comprised a greater portion of their winning totals. Despite great team efforts, they were forced to settle for disappointing tie games with Quaboag, Wachusett, Auburn and Shepherd Hill. ■ Though the team concept was predominant during the field hockey season, individual efforts have to be acknowledged. Senior defensive players Sue Peters (halfback), Cheryl Caouette (goalie), and Jan St. Laurent (fullback) were true team leaders. Contributing to the team ' s success on offense were Barbara Brousseau, Sherri Brousseau, Carol Lambert, Marcy Capistrand and Annette Rajchl. The invaluable experience picked up by undercla ssmen in both prac- tice sessions and games during the ' 75 season augurs well for future Pioneerette field hockey. VARSITY: KNEELING: A. Rajchl, S. They were not eliminated until the 16th game of the season when they were nipped by Shepherd Hill 5-4. They also beat their arch-rivals the Bartlett Indians for the first time in several seasons. The Pioneers placed three players on the Border Conference All-Star team: LeBlanc, second baseman Trahan, and first baseman Knight. fc Pioneerette Tennis One of the newer sports at Southbridge High School, girls ' tennis made great strides during the 1975 season. Under the tutelage of Coaeh Sharon Edwards, the Pioneerettes slowly but surely progressed to a point of respectability as the season wore on. B The upcoming basketball season looked bright for the Pioneers, with Senior captain Pablo Molina leading the way and Dave Lafleche returning from the Marines to play the hoop for SHS. Juniors Paul Blanchet and Tony Santilli were also hopefuls for another good year. But the 1975-76 season opened on a dismal note as they dropped their first two games. The Prouty defense checked the Pioneers on 57 points while tallying 60 of their own. In double overtime, the Oxford Pirates sunk Southbridge 84-83. But the worst was over as the Southbridge team rallied to drop Quaboag 82-66, with Pab Molina scoring 25 points, leading the scorers. Tony Santilli and Dave Lafleche added 16 each. Martha ' s Vineyard traveled to Southbridge los- ing a heartbreaker to the Pioneers 69-67. Molina was the top scorer with 19 points. Junior Mark Montigny scored 14. The Pioneers won their seventh straight against the Auburn Dandies, 55-50. Blanchet had 23 points and Molina scored 16. After finishing the 1st half of the season with a fine 7-2 record, the Pioneers looked forward to the second half of their schedule. Pioneerette Basketball - v F % .if ill l ▼ II A ' . m: V Jumping back from a disappointing loss in the quest for the District III title, the Pioneerettes again pulled together to take the small school division title of the Clark Tournament. An outstanding team effort combined with an effective zone press, steals and tur- novers were the key as the girls romped over Shepherd Hill, Lester, and in the fin- als, Lunenburg. Exception offensive play- ers were Cheryl Caouette, Sherri Brous- seau and Sue Peters, who was also named MVP in the small school division. Clearing the defensive boards were captain Lisa Corbit and Jan St. Laurent. Not to be out done this year, the girls were top seeded in the Wachusett Regional Holiday Invitational. After easily defeating David Prouty, the team did away with arch rival Douglas by a score of 66-28. Wachu- sett was paired against Southbridge in the finals, which proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season. The Pioneer- ettes win resulted in senior co-captains Sue Peters and Jan St. Laurent and junior Sherri Brouseau being named to the All Star Team. Co-captain Cheryl Caouette and sophomore Pam Molina played tena- cious defense throughout the tournament. In the 1975-76 season, the Pioneerettes racked up an impressive record. The team proved their abilities early in the year with resounding wins over every opponent. Carol Lambert, Marcy Capistrand and Chris Sved- berg provided the defense necessary to retain the lead built up in the early minutes of each game. Offensive sparkplugs were Annette Rejchl, Kim Brouseau and Jan Duquette. These are obtaining the necessary ex- perience to continue the team success in the future. Even coach Ellie Tremblay believes, We have the ability, the winning attitude and the team work nec- essary to produce one of SHS ' s most outstanding bas- ketball teams. With all these factors in their favor, how can they lose? SHS OPPONENTS 12 Bay Path 5 60 Oxford 40 73 Q.R.H.S. 50 58 Prouty 44 61 M. There were many excellent Junior Varsity players on the 1975- 76 team. Some of the more prominent were: Dona Cote, Sheila Morrill, and Mona Kantorski. Under the guidance of Coach Gately, the J.V. Coach Hapgood con- centrated on skating, conditioning and position- al play, the three major ingredients to success in high school hockey. Steve Metras captained the squad for his sec- ond straight year along with alternates Rich Earls and Bob Pickarski. The first line had Junior Steve Gravel, a lead- ing goal scorer last year, flanked by Ron Petro and Jim Jalbert. Metras and Gravel were on the South County Leaugues ' All-Star team in the previous year. The second line had Paul LaRo- chelle at center, with Rick Poirier on the wings. They were all three year veterans, as were the tri-captains. The goal tending was left to senior Mike Blake. Mike ' s inexperience did not hinder his success, since his desire and hard work more than made up for it. The highlight in the early going was a 6-3 upset win over a tough Millbury High team. A last night with, created for, and given to the class of ' 75 ' for We May Never Pass This Way Again £. ; SBKiraKBS Once again the junior-senior prom festivities were held at the beautiful Pleasant Valley Country Club. Couples gathered on the lawn, transforming the coun- try club into an atmosphere of anticipation. The evening was filled with much music and dancing to the ' Sounds of Seeco ' . The traditional grand march of senior girls was also held. Although the choice was difficult, Joan Mills was given the title of queen, with Kelly Sullivan, Janet McGrath, Jo Ann Theodoss and Marianne Lavallee serving as her court. It was defina- tly a night for which the successful class of ' 76 ' will always remember. 116 One Act Plays vm WL w : ' JjjP v B | 118 H. LaFleche, L. Hernandez, R. Chenevert, C. Matte, T. Dion, C. This year the drama club presented a new idea to all their fans at SHS. Three one act plays were displayed with abundant acting ability. The Witch ' s Sabbath was a dramatic sketch of the witch era in Salem. The actors captured the eerie feeling very well. Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge was a his- toric play performed in a bicentennial spirit. Shut Up Martha was a delightful comedy which kept the audience roaring. 119 2k iL The Thanksgiving Day game preparations began the week before with a decorating contest. Life size football players were hung on the wall in bright bold colors with sayings representing the spirit of the stu- dents at SHS. Vitality was at its peak during the Thanksgiving Day rally. All classes were wild with enthusiasm which gave the players the confidence they needed. Yelling contest were held along with the judging of the decorations. Much support was given from the band, majorettes and cheerleaders. Sophomores re- ceived the ' Big Mouth ' award while the Mighty Sen- iors won the decorating contest. SHS spirit filled the town the night before the game, when the car caravan travelled through the streets follow by a bon fire at Henry Street field. Despite rain, the Pioneers sucessfully won the Tur- key Day game! ■ Variety Show Talent again prevailed at SHS, with the stars shining brightly . This year ' s variety show was a blend of comedy, music, dancing, and drama. A terrific show of outstanding performances was dis- played with frequently added commercials yielding some light slapstick to the fun. Applause was heard loud and clear ... A good time was had by all. 124 Student Council Day 126 The Central District Massachusetts Association of Stu- dent Councils met December 4, 1975 with thirty-one neigh- boring communities attending the convention. The SHS Student Council, under the direction of Mr. Jeffery Larson, hosted the series of events for the day which included: welcome speeches, swapshops and a deli- cious buffet dinner. The main guest speaker of the day was Attorney General Frank Bellotti, who gave an inspiring talk to all interested students at the conference. The entire day was exciting and prosperous in that much pride and care was shown to all that SHS is the best! NHS Induction The annual National Honor Society induction was once again held in the spring of ' 75 ' . Over thirty students were given the privilege of joining the society through hard work and continual effort on the part of each. Under the advisorship of Senor Laconto the group has lived up to its quality in performance and enthusiasm which has been ex- pected. The honored guest speaker for the day was our State Representative Mr. Jack Farland, who gave a motiviating speech to the audience centered around the topic of getting involved and turned on to life itself. The SHS jazz band performed a couple of num- bers which concluded the assembly. 128 Senior Party The class of 76 broke tradition by having a Senior Party, which replaced the annual class trip. The party was held at Rom ' s res- taurant on January thirty-first. A buffet din- ner was served followed by much dancing with music provided by the sounds of VanHe- flin. The turnout was great and an enjoyable time was had by all, proving the success of this new SHS function. 131 SPIRIT OF ' 76 During the week of February ninth through the fourteenth, the Spirit of ' 76 was shown by all the students of SHS who got involved in the annual Win- ter Carnival. The variety of competition between classes included contests such as volleyball, basket- ball, tricycle races and ping pong tournaments. Other activities such as pie eating and a staring contest added to the spirited fun. Talent was also displayed in the murals, class sing and the chess tournament. There were also poster and essay contests which ad- ded color to the Carnival. 133 VIPEIM( PIMK! Winter Carnival queen was chosen — Lynette Math- ieu recieving the winning rose. Cathy O ' Brien, Mellen Morrill, Joanne Servant and Sherri Brousseau served as her court. The Valentines Day dance concluded the Carnival with dancing to the sensational group, Maze. The Jolly Juniors took the entire Winter Carnival leaving the Mighty Seniors second, Sophomores third and Fresh- man last, the spirit of ' 76 prevailing once again . . . 136 , A iiitbfiii iuiu j 137 r S MY WKD M 1 1 3DING CAKEji ■ • FASSA THE PIZZA ■■ I KARLY (iRAI) (U ' KSS WHO ' S COMING TO DINNKR Milestone Editors Krysia Mroczkowski, editor-in-chief debbie george lisa brown barbara seremet zofia kowalski kim dwyer sue bouvier lisa miller maureen richards patty champeau sarah king lisa capillo sherry broskey maryann meredith cindy grant richard poirier brian meredith gail remian diane kulis michelle proulx mary ann ciukaj Sarah Graf, managing editor Janet Olson, layout editor 148 Linda Seremet, art editor Denise Nadeau, copy editor Mr. Roland Varin, advisor All of our gratitude and thanks go to Mr. Roland Varin, whose guidance and help made our impossible dreams into the reality of this memorable book.  In CONGRESS.
